BLINDNESS
Julianne Moore stars as the only sighted person in Fernando Meirelles' SF movie BLINDNESS,
set for release on September 26. She said in a recent interview that she was daunted by
the role, which tells the story from her character's point of view. Literally. "It's told
through her eyes in the book--it's all from her point of view--so there were times when it
reads like 'She thought she would do this' or 'She decided not to do that,' and I wondered
how to play that." The story, based on the book by Portuguese author José Saramagoa, deals
with a mysterious infection that sweeps the population of an unidentified city, leaving all
but a few without sight, including Moore's character, a doctor's wife. When victims are first
placed in an abandoned asylum, they become victims of other inmates and guards. "What's
amazing about Fernando is that he tells these big stories in great sweeping detail and
huge cinematic gestures, where you see this swath of humanity, but he does it small brush,"
Moore said. The oddly futuristic story gives no hint as to the film's setting or time, and
Moore said that's on purpose. "I always say movies don't predict the future; they merely
reflect the culture," she said. "In the last decade, there's been so much happening
politically and socially in terms of natural disasters and man-made disasters that it's
kind of overwhelming for us. There's this huge sense of anxiety in our global culture.
This film definitely reflects that." BLINDNESS also stars Danny Glover, Mark Ruffalo,
Gael Garcia Bernal and Alice Braga.
THIRST
Variety reports that Universal Pictures and Focus Features have boarded Oldboy director
Park Chan-wook's in-production vampire movie THIRST. It's the first time a Korean film
has received U.S. studio financing and a stateside distribution commitment before its
local release. Universal and Focus will invest in and co-produce the movie, which has
so far been steered by Korean studio CJ Entertainment. Focus will premiere the film
in North America, with CJ handling the remaining international sales rights. CJ also
will distribute the film in South Korea. THIRST stars Song Kang-ho (The Host), Shin
Ha-kyun (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance) and Kim Ok-bi as the leading lady. The movie
deals with a priest who participates in a medical experiment to find a cure for a
deadly disease, with traumatic repercussions. It is slated to be completed in time
for a festival bow in mid-2009.
LOST AND FOUND
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA star Katee Sackhoff has signed on to Dick Wolf's NBC pilot LOST
AND FOUND. She'll play an LAPD detective who is banished to working John and Jane
Doe cases after clashing with department brass. According to the Hollywood Reporter,
her signing lifts a casting contingency on the pilot and gives it a formal green light.
CASTLE
Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog) stars in CASTLE, scheduled
for the 2009 season. Fillion plays Nick Castle, a successful murder-mystery writer
who has just killed off his main character. However, it seems one of his fans liked
his books just a bit too much when a copycat murderer starts running around killing
people as described in Castle's books. The weary writer is called in by the NYPD
homicide department to help them catch the killer. The show is produced by ABC.
THE CHANGELING
The first trailer for JMS' THE CHANGELING is now online at
http://www.movieweb.com/news/03/31203.php. The film, based on a true story,
stars Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, Jeffrey Donovan, Colm Feore, Amy Ryan and
Michael Kelly. The events follow the plight of a woman (Jolie) that has her kidnapped
son returned, only to find out that he is not really her son after all.
Angelina Jolie is a powerful actress and this role truly showcases her acting
ability. We all know JMS can spin a wonderful story -- Clint Eastwood has brought
it to the big screen.
DOOMSDAY PROTOCOL
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Fox has picked up DOOMSDAY PROTOCOL, an original
story by Shane Salerno. The plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is known
to be an epic science fiction adventure in the vein of "The Seven Samurai" involving
a group of aliens and humans with various abilities who are brought together to save Earth.
No word on when production will begin.

BABYLON PODCAST: SHOW 127
This week’s show was slightly delayed because of Dragon*Con. Thank Brad for imbibing
in the Red Bull to speed his post-con recovery and get the editing done.
Vorlons and political tangents do not mix. The puns are too much, it’s too late for
the sane ones to vote. That, and the smoke machines. Let’s hear it for the Hollywood
Wafters Guild!
Deep Geeking: This week, Tim and Summer talk about “Atonement”, and we pick nits
about the pacing and some aspects of the execution in this episode… notably on why
Delenn’s clan waited so long before taking issue with her relationship with John
Sheridan, and what exactly is the purpose of the assistant in The Dreaming, anyway?
Was Lennier’s guidance colored by his feelings for her, and his subconscious hopes
of separating Sheridan and Delenn?
Tim doesn’t care for the “genie in the bottle” element of The Dreaming as a plot
device to reframe some badly needed exposition and back story. For the weight and
potential impact of what was revealed in this episode, could it have been pieced
out to viewers differently? The mandate of summoning Delenn home for this questioning
was mostly a surprise, and some breadcrumbs about this being a looming issue might
have taken care of some of that.
Go check out Deep Geeking when you get a chance, and if you want to contribute a
geeking essay, send a note to Summer.
Discussion: In an email for Jeffrey, Gene from Greenville wants to get his opinion
on the real impact of JMS’ statement on current or future collaborations with WB;
James in Tallahassee agrees that BSG’s Vipers would indeed wipe the floors with
B5’s Starfuries and Thunderbolts (warning… serious geeky tangent approaching!);
Rod in Nashville sent in a voicemail in praising JMS’ out-of-the-box resolution
to the Shadow War, a victory of wills and philosophies, rather than resorting to
a shoot-out in space.

It's that time of year again -- new shows are on the horizon. Are there any that
interest you? I am waiting to see what THE MENTALIST and FRINGE are like. And then
there are the returning favorites - HEROES, LOST, 24, NCIS and others. With Bruce
Boxleitner being added to HEROES, there is an added incentive to watch this season to
see how other changes will affect the story.
Send in your thoughts and comments to

far. Add yours! If you see an old topic you want to respond to, go right ahead.
We enjoy hearing from you.
While Andreas Katsulas (G'Kar), Rick (Biggs) and Tim (Choate) are no longer with us,
