BABYLON 5 NUMBER 13?
I saw a note over in the B5 moderated newsgroup and just had to add this to today's
update. Babylon 5 was ranked #13 in the 20 Greatest Sci-Fi TV shows rated by
Entertainment
Weekly . While we would contend that #13 is much too low in the rankings, it
is good none-the-less to get the recognition, with such classics as Doctor Who,
Quantum Leap, Firefly (7), Lost (6), ST: Next Gen (5), X-Files (4), Battlestar
Galactica (3), Star Trek: The Original (2) and Twilight Zone (1). How Futurama, Max
Headroom can get ahead of Babylon 5 is a question. How The Prisoner can be rated 15
is also a mystery.
STARGATE WOMEN
Syfy shot a very cool video with the women from STARGATE -- they discuss their
roles and how they view their roles and acting. Amanda Tapping talks about being
both an actor and producer on SANCTUARY.
HOBBIT UPDATE
The Hollywood Reporter writes that MGM has secured support from key lenders to allow
the studio enough cash to proceed with its participation in THE HOBBIT.
A recent proposal by MGM's new CEO Steve Cooper to defer interest payments on its
debt load for the next three months on Thursday won a crucial endorsement from J.P.
Morgan. The investment firm leads a lenders steering committee that has been agitating
for a dramatic restructuring of the Lion's operations and its ownership structure.
In exchange for an agreement to limited interest forbearance, J.P. Morgan secured
a few changes in existing debt terms.
Concern over MGM's hold on HOBBIT is at the heart of the activity. In a 50-50 rights
partnership with Warner Bros.' New Line unit, two HOBBIT pics are being developed.
The first HOBBIT aims for theatrical release in 2011, with Guillermo del Toro on
board to direct that and a sequel. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and
del Toro are writing scripts for both and are expected to deliver the first screenplay
by the end of November.
Warners will lead production and distribute at least domestically. For now, the
Burbank studio also is covering any immediate expenses.
MGM execs hope to corral at least $40 million for its HOBBIT activities. The requested
interest deferrals amount to more than $50 million.
THE FUTURE IS WILD
Variety writes that Warner Bros. has signed on to adapt the animated documentary
series THE FUTURE IS WILD into a feature film. The development deal was struck
between the studio and producer John H. Williams' Vanguard Films and series creator
John Adams as well as brand partners Gerhard Sieber and Ettore Botta.
The animated/live-action/animatronic project involves a group of scientists and
zoologists and their projections for what Earth could look like over the next 200
million years. "It's a freaky, fantastical interpretation but also a scientifically
based version of what the evolution of Earth looks like -- with or without us,"
Williams said. No production date has been set.
SHUTTER ISLAND TRAILER

for release on February 19, 2010. This Martin Scorcese film stars Leonardo DiCaprio,
Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Emily Mortimer, Jackie
Earle Haley.

The B5 Books Team is delaying the release of Part 4 of the "Asked & Answered" series

BABYLON PODCAST
Welcome to Show #173 - The Ragged Edge!
Tim and Summer venture down the rabbit hole, and ponder the implications of the
vast lack of dental hygiene portrayed in science fiction television. Are SF TV
writers simply avoiding having to create new dental technology, or having to explain
the continuing use of bristles on a stick, or is it simply to save precious minutes
for real storytelling?
Deep Geeking: This week, we discuss “The Ragged Edge”, a pivotal episode in the growth
of both the Interstellar Alliance and G’Kar; and in the fall of both Centauri Prime
and Michael Garibaldi.
We talk about the hestitation of G’Kar to embrace his new role as spiritual guide
for the Narn, and Ta’lon’s role in helping him open up to the possibilities from
being a spiritual teacher; about Garibaldi’s slow fall back into the bottle having
dire consequences for his safety and his friend’s life during a mission; and the
revelation to the core group about the different Centauri factions at work in the
royal court, the probable connection of one of them to the raids on Alliance member
worlds and the likely threat level to Londo’s life should he find out and go asking
the wrong questions in the wrong places.
We also ask the question “Who killed Tafiq?” because of the uncertainty of whether
or not the same people who killed him were also the same ones who killed the pilot.
Feedback: In this week’s emails, we address the changing appearances of the Drakh,
and whether “Drakh” is a name for a collective of races instead of for a single race
of dark servants; some theories of the extent of Lyta’s enhanced abilities against
mundanes being stronger than they might be against a Psi Cop, and some speculative
casting for a B5 “reboot”; anecdote on the pulling of Zima from Austin Powers; and
a few more opinions on spirituality and religion and the vast grey area encompassing both.

DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movie Based on Acclaimed Jeph Loeb/Ed McGuinness
Comics; Tim Daly, Kevin Conroy & Clancy Brown Reprise Original Voices of Superman,
Batman & Lex Luthor
The World’s Greatest Super Heroes become America’s most wanted criminals – and are
hunted by friends and foes alike – in SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES, the sixth
entry in the popular DVD series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies. A
co-production of Warner Premiere, DC Comics and Warner Bros. Animation, the full-
length animated film will be distributed by Warner Home Video on September 29, 2009.
SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES will be available as a Special Edition 2-disc version
on DVD and Blu-Ray™ Hi-Def for $24.98 (SRP) and $29.99 (SRP), respectively, as well
as single disc DVD for $19.98 (SRP) and On Demand.
SUPERMAN/BATMAN: PUBLIC ENEMIES is based on the popular Jeph Loeb/Ed McGuinness
comic series/graphic novel. Animation legend Bruce Timm (Superman Doomsday, Green
Lantern) is executive producer. Michael Goguen (Justice League: The New Frontier)
is supervising producer. Sam Liu (The Batman) is directing a script written by Stan
Berkowitz (Justice League: The New Frontier).
In the film, United States President Lex Luthor uses the oncoming trajectory of a
Kryptonite asteroid to frame Superman and declare a $1 billion bounty on the heads
of the Man of Steel and his “partner in crime,” Batman. Heroes and villains alike
launch a relentless pursuit of Superman and Batman, who must unite – and recruit
help – to stave off the action-packed onslaught, stop the asteroid, and uncover
Luthor’s devious plot to take command of far more than North America.
The movie reunites the lead voices of Superman, Batman and Lex Luthor from the
landmark Superman: The Animated Series and Batman: The Animated Series. Tim Daly
(Private Practice), Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League) and
Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption) reprise their roles as Superman, Batman and
Lex Luthor, respectively.
REVIEW
The partnership of Batman and Superman is wonderful in this animated video. They stand
together against Lex Luthor, who has been elected President of the United States. Other
super heroes side with Lex and begin the process of bringing order to the chaos that
has been caused the a huge global economic crisis. Lex asks Superman to join him, but
Superman and Batman don't trust Lex. When a meteor threatens Earth, Lex tells the
military to use missiles -- despite their argument that they will not be effective.
Lex's ego kicks into high-gear and does not accept their findings. When the missiles
do fail, Superman and Batman try to save the Earth. It is an interesting adventure
for everyone.
The extras included with this 2-disc set are awesome. The conversations with writers
of the comics is intersting and informative. The extra animated videos are done very
well and you get additional information on the upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE project.
For fans of Superman and Batman, this 2-disc set is a wonderful addition.
THE MENTALIST - SEASON ONE
Release date: September 22, 2009
Official website: www.thementalistdvd.com
Synopsis
“A mentalist is a master manipulator of thought and behavior.” The mentalist is
Patrick Jane (Simon Baker in an acclaimed performance), a celebrity psychic whose
wife and child are viciously murdered by an elusive serial killer called Red John.
Devastated, Patrick admits his paranormal act is fake, renounces his earlier life
and uses his astonishing skills of observation and analysis – talents that made
him appear psychically gifted – to bring killers to justice. At crime scenes across
California, Patrick now helps an elite team of detectives break their toughest cases.
But no matter how many criminals he catches, Patrick never forgets his central goal:
Find Red John. And bring him down.
REVIEW OF DVD
I have to admit, I didn't watch this show much this year, but have always been interested
in it. Simon Baker is really easy on the eyes, and I loved him in THE GUARDIAN. He is
wonderful in the role of Patrick Jane, a consultant who helps the California Bureau of
Investigation with murder cases.
I love character based action/adventure shows and this one fills both bills. There is
enough action each week and the characters are rich and keep me coming back for more.
Thank heavens for the DVD! I started watching yesterday and 4 hours later wondered
why I hadn't stayed up to watch this program throughout the year. CBS has been great
at putting the show on at different times as well, but if you are like me, the DVD is
what you need. From the first story, the characters, work on a number of levels. As
you progress through the DVD, you see them grow and get better and closer. While Patrick
is the focus of nearly everything that goes on, the B stories are very good as well. I
love the growing love story between Rigsby and Van Pelt. Rigsby is a big football kind
of guy who is quite shy and madly in love with the new agent, Van Pelt -- but too shy
to tell her of his feelings. When a baddie comes after Jane, Rigsby is attacked and you
see there are feelings between the two, but now you have a situation -- on-the-job
love stories never work out.
Robin Tunney is very good as Agent Teresa Lisbon. As the series begins, she is the
foil for Jane, but as the series has progressed, you learn more about her troubled
childhood and you can appreciate her character a bit more.
If you love the show, you'll truly enjoy the DVD.
The new season premieres September 24 at 10:00pm ET.

Gene the Cow montage
Three Full-Length Commentaries from writers/producers, including J.J. Abrams, Roberto
Orci, Alex Kurtman, J.R. Orci, David Goodman, Bryan Burk, Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner
I love this show and have enjoyed all the episodes in this first season. I am
anxiously awaiting season two and SO happy that the DVD will be out with all those
wonderful extras listed above -- and more.
I have loved this show from the very beginning. FRINGE is a very thought-provoking show that
has a definite grounding in real science. Perhaps that is why I like it so much. While I can
watch some "fantasy" programs, programs that have some basis in reality seem to work better for
me. While some of the stories are pretty much out there, the interaction with the characters
is just perfect. You have Olivia, an FBI agent now assigned to investigate strange occurances,
ala X-Files. You have Walter, somewhat of a mad scientist, but perhaps he is more of a visionary.
His son, Peter, acts as a guardian for Walter, who gets released from a mental institution to
help Olivia, is somewhat of a con-man, collaborator, partner to both Olivia and Walter. The
acting is just top-rate -- as is the writing. Created by J.J. Abrams, you see a tinge of
ALIAS, but only that. The chemistry for all of the characters is wonderful and I am anxious
to see what happens for the upcoming second season. This is like a melodrama that teases you
with clues each week. You don't have to watch each week to enjoy the show though -- but watching
each week increases the enjoyment -- at least it does for me.
The DVD is marvelous. There are extra features on each of the 7 discs included in the package.
You will hear from J.J. Abrams about how he created the series, you will hear from the writers
and special effects genuises who have brought this show to the small screen. This DVD is
definitely one you will enjoy watching on many levels.

SMALLVILLE: THE COMPLETE EIGHTH SEASON
Release date: August 25, 2009
Official website: www.smallvilledvd.com
Synopsis:
There is a new reporter at the Daily Planet: Clark Kent, who shares a workspace
with Lois Lane. There is a new hero in Metropolis, too. No one knows who he is.
But Jimmy Olsen was on the scene of one of the do-gooder's exploits, and he snapped
a blurred photo of the hero in superspeed action -- a hero everyone now calls the
Red-Blue Blur. Red-jacketed, blue-shirted Clark Kent draws closer to his Superman
destiny in the exciting 22-episode, 6-disc Season 8 of Smallville. Another Kryptonian
destiny also takes shape. Davis Bloome begins to realize he is Doomsday. His mission
on Earth: kill Clark Kent. So many new events (will Jimmy and Chloe's marriage last?),
so many new faces (Tess Mercer, Saturn Girl and Cosmic Boy among them!), so many
state-of-the-art effects -- so don't miss a single thrill-packed moment!
REVIEW:
I have been a fan of SMALLVILLE since it began -- wow eight years ago! Where has the
time gone? It has been wonderful seeing the actors grow into their roles. While I miss
John Schneider and Michael Rosenbaum, Kristen Kreuk did come back for a brief period as
Lana Lang. However, Tess Mercer's addition (portrayed by Cassidy Freeman) has brought
new life to the Luther lab and this DVD series may be the best yet. There is plenty
of action and with Clark getting help from Oliver Queen (Justin Harley) as Green Arrow.
Allison Mack has always been wonderful as Chloe and she continues to light up the screen
whenver she is part of it. Can't say I'm a huge fan of Erica Durance. Her Lois Lane
leaves me wanting something more. In some episodes she is added more as an after
thought than as a plot staple.
All in all though, SMALLVILLE fans will have a lot to talk about and with the coming
new season, there are hopes for even greater adventures for Clark Kent.

BABYLON 5 MUSIC VIDEOS AND TRIBUTES
I found this message on the Babylon 5 moderated newsgroup this morning and just
had to post it so that others might enjoy the marvelous music videos created by
John Hudgens.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
As some of you may know, I was hired by Joe Straczynski back in the
day to create Babylon 5 music videos for him to use at science fiction
conventions, and later to promote the show to networks. Eight were
produced over the run of the series, not including the memorial videos
I did later for Rick Biggs and Andreas Katsulas.
For the longest time, the only way to see these was if Joe or I showed
them at a convention, but now, after numerous requests from fans over
the years, Joe has given me permission me to post these online.
- This is the extended version that I did for Andreas' widow ater the
original cut was released on the net. It's never been seen online
until now.
For those of you who've never seen these, I hope you enjoy them - and
for those that have (and emailed me many times over the years about
releasing them), I hope they're as good as you remember. Working with
Joe on these videos was one of the highlights of my career, and I'll
be forever grateful to him for the doors these have opened for me. I'm
proud to have them on my resume.

RED CIRCLE: THE HANGMAN #1
Written by J. Michael Straczynski; Art by Tom Derenick and Bill Sienkiewicz; Cover
by Jesus Saiz.
J. Michael Straczynski dives into the DC Universe, bringing four of the finest
heroes of the Golden and Silver Ages with him! Completely reimagined for the modern
world from their original appearances in Archie/MLJ publications, these four heroes
will show you a side of the DC Universe you've never seen before! The Civil War
claimed many lives…but one of those lives still hasn't ended! Union doctor Robert
Dickering found himself on the wrong side of the battle lines, and despite his heroic
treatment of a fallen enemy soldier, he also found himself on the wrong end of a
noose! But a shadowy power stepped forth in the twilight moments between life and
death and offered him a deal he couldn't refuse: to forever roam the Earth, saving
the lives of innocents condemned like himself – or hastening the deaths of the guilty!
But in taking the seemingly righteous mission of the Hangman, has he accepted God's
work? Or has he become the vengeful fist of the Devil himself?
