TODAY'S NEWS
Saturday, October 2, 2004:
WEBSITE UPDATES: I will be away from the area for a couple of weeks -- of to Europe to teach
some classes. I won't have access to the internet on a regular basis, so updates to the website probably
won't occur until my return on October 18.
LOST: Reuters news service reports that LOST, the new castaway drama from ALIAS creator
J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof has become one of the highest-rated new shows of the fall television
season. The show about plane-crash survivors marooned on a mysterious tropical island drew 17 million
viewers in its second week, easily dominating its 8 o'clock hour and ranking as the most watched show
all night after CSI: NY. It was number one among teens and men aged 18-49. The second airing of LOST
retained 91 percent of the 18.7 million viewers who tuned in to the show's premiere last week and 96
percent of its debut 18-49 audience. Last week's LOST premiere was the first ABC drama to enter the
Nielsen top 10 in 18-49 ratings since THE PRACTICE in 2001. LOST airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
ALEXANDER: Set to premiere in theaters on November 24, you can get your first look at thisWarner
Bros. epic at http://alexanderthemovie.warnerbros.com/.
The film is directed by Oliver Stone and stars Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, Val Kilmer and Anthony Hopkins.
ALEXANDER is based on the true story of one of history's most luminous and influential leaders, Alexander
the Great (Farrell) - a man who had conquered 90% of the known world by the age of 27. Alexander led his
virtually invincible Greek and Macedonian armies through 22,000 miles of sieges and conquests in just eight
years, and by the time of his death at the age of 32 had forged an empire unlike any the world had ever seen.
The film chronicles Alexander's path to becoming a living legend, from a youth fueled by dreams of myth, glory
and adventure to his lonely death as a ruler of a vast Empire. Alexander is the incredible story of a life that united
the Known World and proved, if nothing else, fortune favors the bold.
ON TV TONIGHT:
"Smallville Backstage Special"
8:00pm - 9:00pm ET on ABC Family
Fans and new viewers can see the hit series from the beginning with season one when "Smallville" premieres on
ABC Family Monday, Oct 4 at 7PM ET/PT. Saturday afternoon, the cable network airs the 2-hour series pilot and
several top episodes beginning at 2PM before the special, which features interviews with the cast and series clips.
"Lost"
8:00pm - 10:00pm ET on ABC
The first two hours of this top-notch, thrilling series from "Alias" creator J.J. Abrams are broadcast again. It is the
best thing on television tonight. Survivors of a mid-Pacific plane crash have landed on an island of harsh terrain,
cruel weather and dark secrets, including a frightful creature that stalks the jungle. Strangers all, even those related
by blood, the survivors' pasts - their ethics, religions, politics and attitudes - threaten to jeopardize the group's ability
to endure. Will the calm leadership offered by one of the group bring comfort or pain? That question will be answered
as the show plays out this year. Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Ian Somerhalder and Dominic Monaghan star.

THE 4400: The first season of THE 4400 is scheduled for release on December 21. The two-disc set collects
the two-hour pilot and five episodes from the show's first season and is guesstimated to cost you about $26.99.
Paramount hasn't released final specs for the DVD set yet. THE 4400 follows the investigations of two FBI agents
assigned to research the return of thousands of alien abductees to Earth. While some of the returned have been
gone for only a short time, such as a few years or less, others were abducted decades ago but haven't aged a day.
With no memory of what happened to them while they were away, the 4400 individuals try to pick up the pieces of
their former lives. During their investigation the agents also discover that each of the abductees seem to have a
strange power or ability that they are just starting to discover. The show was aired this past summer on the USA
Network and took in high ratings. CINESCAPE reports that 13 new episodes of THE 4400 have been ordered by
the cable network constiuting the show's second season. Filming will commence next month in Vancouver, B.C.
X3: The Hollywood Reporter reports that 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios have hired scribe Simon
Kinberg to pen the script for "X3". Kinberg wrote two projects for Fox and Fox partner Regency Enterprises: the
actioner "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and a rewrite of the Jennifer Garner starrer
"Elektra," also a Marvel property. He also turned in a rewrite on another big-budget Fox/Marvel project, "Fantastic
Four," which is in production under the direction of Tim Story. Kinberg said the story line for "X3" is still being
hammered out. "I'm a religious reader of the ('X-Men') comics, and I loved the first two movies," Kinberg said.
CASANOVA: According to Sky News, Peter O'Toole has signed up to play legendary love machine
CASANOVA in a BBC drama. This new take on "Casanova" is the brainchild of "Queer As Folk" and "Doctor
Who" writer Russell T Davies who describes him as "a wonderful, barmy, inventive man, and what a fraud.
He wasn't born an aristocrat, he lied his way into jobs and positions of power with charm and cheek".
Casanova's bed-hopping adventures will be told in flashback with O'Toole as the ageing Lothario and
David Tennant as his younger self.
STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE: Rumors continue to fly about William Shatner as a guest star in several
upcoming episodes of the series. It appears talks are now going well and we may just see Captain Kirk in
the near future.
SHARK TALE: According to CNN, SHARK TALE is a fine kettle of fish that should be irresistible to
anyone who loves movies, while also offering some interesting subtext giving the feature an extra little bite.
The film stars -- albeit only vocally -- Will Smith, Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Renee Zellweger, Robert De Niro
and Martin Scorsese (the latter in a rare acting gig), all of whom do a fine job. Excluding a creepy scene in
"Taxi Driver," De Niro and Scorsese -- who have teamed on nine films to date -- have never acted together
before. For "Shark Tale," they were actually in the recording studio at the same time, allowing them to ad-lib
many of their lines. The same was true of Smith and Black. Actors actually meeting each other, let alone
performing together, is a rarity during the long process of making an animated film, which makes this project
a true piece of animated film history. The result is a delightful, delicious and fresh pop culture comedy.

FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX: The 20th Century Fox remake of FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX is set to open in
theaters on December 22. Apple is hosting a trailer for the remake of the 1965 film starring Dennis Quaid as
the captain of a small commercial flight that crashlands in a remote part of the Mongolian desert, thousands of
miles off-course and with practically zero chance of rescue. Faced with certain death, one of the plane's passengers,
a structural engineer, comes up with a plan to make a new plane from the working pieces of the crashed aircraft.
Can the survivors come together and build the aircraft before their supplies run out? Download the trailer at

JAMES BOND: The Hollywood Reporter reports that plans for "Bond 21" have been put on hold. While MGM,
which is in the process of being sold to a group headed by Sony Corp., has insisted on a business-as-usual stance, the
studio confirmed Wednesday that it has put the development of a new installment of its most important franchise on
hold. As a result, the movie, which had been billed simply as "Bond 21" and was scheduled for release Nov. 21, 2005,
will not be hitting theaters in its traditional November slot as originally planned. According to an MGM spokesperson,
the studio made the decision because it has not yet found a director for the film. Sources familiar with the situation said
that the producers plan to meet next month to decide whether to aim for a summer 2006 or November 2006 release date.
SLANTED AND ENCHANTED: According to the Hollywood Reporter, Chris Columbus has closed a deal with
Warner Bros. Pictures to develop and direct SLANTED AND ENCHANTED, based on a script by Ben Queen. Described
as a dramedy about a recovered pathological liar who must return home and interact with his parents in order to unravel
the mystery of his sister's illness, things spiral out of control as he falls into self-destructive patterns. The project is said
to have some magical elements at the center of the story, similar to the ones Columbus explored in directorial outings
"Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."
ROBOTS: The first trailer for 20th Century Fox's CG-animated ROBOTS is now online at
Yahoo! Movies. ICE AGE co-directors Carlos
Saldanha and Chris Wedge are bringing the sci-fi comedy, featuring the voices of Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Mel
Brooks, Greg Kinnear, Drew Carey, Jim Broadbent, Amanda Bynes, and Robin Williams, to theaters on March 11.
Set on a world populated entirely by robots, this is the story of a young genius, Rodney (McGregor), who wants to make
robots capable of making the world a better place, but he finds his dream challenged by a corporate tyrant and a master
inventor, Big Weld (Brooks), while also being seduced by a sexy corporate robot, Cappy (Berry).

ANDROMEDA: There's a new cast member this year aboard ANDROMEDA. Brandy Ledford makes
her debut as the powerful and sexy android Doyle in the episode "Phear Phactor Phenom," set to air
Oct. 8 on the SCI FI Channel. In this episode, quote a lot happens. In a recent interview, Ledford
said, "Harper [Gordon Michael Woolvett] is reintroduced. The first two episodes were sort of a
mystery, and the third one is where we start to see a couple of the old crew from the last season."
"So Dylan [Kevin Sorbo] and Rhade [Steven Bacic] are exploring this new planet that they happen to
be on, and they run into Harper, and they meet me. I'm not very distinguishable in the first episode,
because Dylan has a lot going on. But I help out. I think that the whole feel of the new season is
for everyone to try to become a crew again. And I'm going to be integrated into that, but slowly.
It's not like I'm going to get thrown into anyone's face." New episodes of ANDROMEDA air on
SCIFI Fridays at 7 p.m. ET/PT.
STARSHIP DAVE: Paramount Pictures has bought writers Rob Greenberg and Bill Corbett comedy
screenplay STARSHIP DAVE, a neat spin on alien visitation yarns. The movie begins when a giant
fireball impacts in New York City's Central Park, leaving behind a massive crater and a seemingly
unfazed man. It turns out that the stranger is really an alien spaceship being run by 100 quarter-inch
tall human-looking space people living inside their "ship". They've come to Earth to try and find a
way to save their planet, but things get twisted when the ship's commander starts to fall in love
with a human woman. The movie will be produced by Guy Walks Into A Bar Productions and Deep River
Productions. So far no actors have been attached to the project.
PET SEMATARY Screenwriter Dave Kajganich will become the latest writer to tackle the big-screen
adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel PET SEMATARY. Just this past March Kajganich was hired to pen
a remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS for Warner Bros.
JOSIAH'S CANON: According to Variety, Sean Connery has abruptly withdrawn from 20th Century
Fox's JOSIAH'S CANON. The studio and director Brett Ratner are in the process of trying to replace
Connery to keep the film on track. The movie was ready to begin shooting in Prague in February.
CANON is a dramatic heist story about a Holocaust survivor who leads the world's foremost team
of bank robbers. The criminal mastermind sets his sights on an supposedly impenetrable bank in
Switzerland, which holds special appeal: It purportedly houses gelt deposited by Jews prior to
the Holocaust. Connery spokesman told the trade that the actor withdrew from the project (despite
the reported $17.5m salary) because he decided to give his full attention to writing his
autobiography for HarperCollins U.K.
ROSEMARY'S BABY: Variety reports that ABC has made a deal to turn Ira Levin's horror classic
ROSEMARY'S BABY into a four-hour miniseries for 2005. The potential pact gives the network rights to
use the famed book along with a lesser-known sequel novel, Son of Rosemary. Lieberman expects to
secure a writer shortly and said most of the mini will be a fairly faithful retelling of Rosemary's
Baby but will likely pick up the story years later, when Rosemary's son becomes a teenager.
The 1968 Paramount original, directed by Roman Polanski, starred Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes.
CONVENTIONS: Got a couple of new listings this morning from Ranger Moyra. Chiller Theatre
looks terrific -- with Pat, Bill, Walter and Brad as guests. There are a lot of guests going to that
convention -- so folks on the East Coast might want to give it a look. Website and more information

THE RETURN OF THE KING will debut on Dec. 14, with 50 minutes of footage added. The 4-hour, 10-minute
extended-edition DVD will cost $39.99; a collector's gift set, which includes a fifth DVD with a 52-minute
program about the music in the franchise, will cost $79.92. As with the extended editions of the previous
two Rings films, the expanded King will include new score music written by Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore,
as well as 300 new special-effects shots. The four-disc extended edition also includes multiple audio commentaries
by director Peter Jackson and more than 30 members of the cast and crew, as well as hours of programs on the
making of the movie and other bonus features.
JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED: SMALLVILLE's Lex Luthor, Michael Rosenbaum is reprising his role of Ghoul
for the season finale of Cartoon Network's Justice League Unlimited. Voice director Andrea Romano said, "It's
basically his impression of Christopher Walken." Rosenbaum is a cast regular as the voice of The Flash and also
provided the voice of Deadshot in a first-season episode. Other familiar voices involved with JUSTICE LEAGUE
UNLIMITED include Adam Baldwin (FIREFLY) providing the voice for Bonk in the second part of "The Once and
Future Thing."
FARSCAPE: SCI FI Channel will air every episode of FARSCAPE, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET/PT Oct. 1-15,
in advance of its upcoming four-hour miniseries FARSCAPE: THE PEACEKEEPER WARS, which premieres at 9 p.m.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Sony's THE FORGOTTEN was the only memorable event at the box office this weekend.
The supernatural thriller from Revolution Studios debuted in the top spot with an impressive estimate of $22 million,
significantly higher than predicted. Last weekend's top film, Paramount's SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW
landed in the second spot with an estimated $6.7 million, plummeting a steep 57% from its opening. The groundbreaking
film, starring Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, has generated an estimated $25.6 million in its first 10 days. Buena Vista's
MR. 3000 generated an estimated $5 million, down 42% from its opening. After 10 days, the Bernie Mac starrer has scored
roughly $15.4 million. 20th Century Fox's FIRST DAUGHTER from Regency Enterprises, which tied Screen Gems' RESIDENT
EVIL: APOCALYPSE for the fourth slot. The romantic comedy, starring Katie Holmes and helmed by Forest Whitaker, joined
the list of underperforming U.S. president's daughter-themed films as it debuted with an unpromising estimate of $4 million
from 2,259 theaters.
ATLANTIS RISING: The Hollywood Reporter reports that Gale Anne Hurd and comic book specialists Platinum
Studios are joining forces to produce the feature film ATLANTIS RISING. Platinum also is partnering with Icarus Studios
to develop a massively multiplayer online game in tandem with the film. Based on a Platinum Studios graphic novel,
ATLANTIS is a political sci-fi thriller about an underwater kingdom and the surface world coming to the brink of war, with
both civilizations hanging in the balance. ATLANTIS was created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg and written by Scott O.
Brown. Check out http://www.platinumstudios.com/icarus/

to star in THE EXORCISM OF ANNELIESE MICHELE, a supernatural movie inspired by true events. Scott
Derrickson will direct for Screen Gems. Derrickson wrote the script with Paul Boardman. Linney will
play an attorney who defends a Catholic priest (Wilkinson), who has been charged with the negligent
homicide of a 19-year-old girl whose exorcism he presided over. The case reawakens faith in the
lawyer. Shooting begins in November in Vancouver, B.C.
HIS DARK MATERIALS: HIS DARK MATERIALS writer and director Chris Weitz is taking Philip
Pullman's children's fantasy book trilogy to the big screen at New Line. The trilogy - "The Golden
Compass," "The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass" - revolves around two children who live in
parallel worlds surrounded by a cast of shape-shifting creatures. Described as darker in tone than
the "Harry Potter" books, the series tackles themes of childhood, innocence and sin, and combines
magic, science and theology.
X-MEN 3: While at the Metro Toronto Convention Center yesterday, Patrick Stewart was asked
about the status of X-MEN 3. Mr. Stewart stated that X-Men 3 will go into production next June 2005
in Vancouver, however nobody knows which cast members will return since there is no script and director.

CRUSADE DVD - COMING DECEMBER 7
Warner Bros Home Video has announced that the Babylon 5 spinoff, Crusade will hit DVD on
December 7. The series stars Peter Woodward, Gary Cole, Marjean Holden, Tracy Scoggins,
Daniel Dae Kim, David Allen Brooks and Carrie Dobro. This 13 episode series (576 mins)
will be released in a 4 disc set, and carries a suggested price of $59.98 US. It'll contain
an English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track, along with English, French and Spanish subtitles.
The video will be presented in the original aspect ratio: 1.33:1. We have little information
on the special features, just that there will be audio commentaries and a documentary.
For those of you not familiar with CRUSADE, here is a synopsis of the plot:
In 2267 the Earth is quarantined, having been infected with a deadly plague by an attacking
alien force. Scientists estimate that it will kill every inhabitant within 5 years, not nearly
enough time for a cure to be developed. So the planet's only hope lies with the Excalibur, an
advanced prototype starship sent out to search ancient alien ruins for their former inhabitant's
secrets, hoping that somewhere out there a cure can be found.

AMAZING STORIES: An old favorite is returning to newstands! Amazing Stories returns
with a September 2004 issue. Amazing Stories is one of the most beloved magazines in the
history of science fiction. Launched in 1926 under the watchful eye of legendary editor
Hugo Gernsback, Amazing Stories introduced generations of fans to exciting adventure and
equally exciting cover art. The magazine was published regularly (as a monthly, bimonthly
or quarterly) all the way up to 1995. It was revived briefly as a quarterly by Wizards of
the Coast (WotC) in 1998 but couldn't make it past the summer of 2000. Now WotC and Paizo
Publishing have revived Amazing Stories yet again with the "first issue of the 21st century!" -
issue #603 (September 2004), a slick magazine-sized monthly that hit newsstands on August 3,
2004. This new Amazing promises a much wider range of subject matter than its previous
incarnations. This isssue includes 20 pages of original fiction from luminaries such as
Harlan Ellison, Gene Wolfe and Bruce Sterling, it is also packs in news, reviews and
interviews covering feature films, DVDs, books, comics - even genre-related music CDs.

BABYLON 5 INTERVIEWS ON VIDEO
Ranger Mark was Dragon-Con's OFFICIAL videographer for 1998 and 1999. He has pulled together a series
of interviews from various conventions over the past 10 years available and they are now available on e-bay.
This includes footage from Dragon-Con with Peter Jurasik hosting the Dawn Look a Like Contest , and 2 panels
of the B5ers, one all women the other the men. There is now a 2-hour tape devoted to BABYLON 5 cast members,
including two interviews with the late Richard Biggs.
For those of us who have enjoyed going to DragonCon over the last few years, these tapes will be especially
enjoyable. They will bring back memories -- that can be shared.
NEW ON THE BOOK SHELVES
For fans of PN Elrod and Nigel Bennet, you'll be happy to know that the third book in the trilogy
will be out in the next few weeks. The title is "Siege Perilous" by BAEN Books. It has a wonderful
cover by Jamie Murray.
Titan Books has announced a September release for the first in a series of Smallville companion books, the first of
which focuses on Season 1.
The book's author is Paul Simpson, with a foreword by executive producers Al Gough and Miles Millar.
The Season 2 Companion will be released in early 2005, with Seasons 3 and 4 to follow before the end of the year.
BABYLON 5 NOVELS
DelRey is reprinting the original Babylon 5 novels.
They started with #7 - Jeanne Cavelos' THE SHADOW WITHIN. Here's one I've been waiting for -- Kathryn
Drennan's TO DREAM IN THE CITY OF SORROWS. The release date is scheduled for July 29, 2003. I love
the new cover art! It can be pre-ordered from
www.amazon.com. For those of you who love Babylon 5, this one reads just like an episode from the series. You just can't
put it down.
CITY OF DREAMS
For those of you who have just joined us here at The Zocalo Today, you may want to check out
The City of Dreams over at the SciFi Channel website. J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of Babylon 5, worked with
Seeing Ear Theatre at SciFi to bring an exclusive, all-new audio drama anthology series featuring tales of dreamers, madmen
and fanatics. If you haven't listened to the stories, you'll not want to miss them. If you haven't listened in a while, you
will want to go back and listen again.
BOOK REVIEWS
Here is a new feature for your enjoyment. I received some new book reviews that I've posted on a
separate Book Review Page. Let me know if you enjoy this new
feature -- and we'll continue to offer them as they are received. Agree with the review? Disagree? We
can post those as well.
Other science fiction material, outside of the B5 environment can be found on the
Materials Page.

be added to the collection of photos available from Peter, including additional copies of the Crusade poster in
photo format. Both are autographed by Peter.
You do NOT have to pay the prices asked for over at e-bay! Here are photos of B5 and Crusade cast members at
fantastic prices. Check out Photo Shop. Ordering is easy -- and you can't
beat the prices! Just let me know which photos you want and I'll check to make sure they are still in stock.
BABYLON 5 TOONS
John Cook has a wonderful collection of cartoons -- many are take-offs from Babylon 5. Here's just
one of them.
He has a cartoon caption contest going on as well. Try your hand at a punch line.
While catching up on my e-mail yesterday morning, I got an instant message from LFMOA along with
a nice goodie that I can share with readers. Thanks for sending along your version of Pinky and the B5 Brain.

United Federated Planets
The Babylon 5 Sector of United Federated Planets
The Babylon 5 Sector is a chartered branch of United Federated Planets (UFP); a not-for-profit
fan club for all fans of Star Trek, science fiction and fantasy. We've been part of UFP almost
from the time the series first went on the air. We welcome all fans of Babylon 5--from the series &
TV movies, to "Crusade" & "Legend of the Rangers," to the literary works in between.
Our parent organization, UFP, has its roots in Star Trek & the late Gene Roddenberry's vision of
the future; which includes community service along with social & fan-related activities. Our sector
takes those ideas and puts them into the Babylon 5 universe that J. Michael Straczynski created.
We're here for fellowship, good times, service and, in a way, living the fantasy that is Babylon 5.
To that end, we enjoy role-play via the written word & live action; costuming; discussions; literary
works; and anything else that we can imagine. No matter what you're interested in, we can accomodate
you. We have positions currently available on the sector staff--EarthDome, EarthForce and the Alliance;
chapter opportunities limited only by your imagination; and ways for you to live out your Babylon 5
fantasy. You can even be part of the B5 station staff! Our sector staff is available to answer your
questions about what we do, how to join, how to start a B5 chapter, and more. To contact us, visit
www.ufphq.com/chain_of_command.htm. In addition, we also put out a newsletter called "Voice of the
Alliance." This newsletter--available in electronic & hard copy formats--informs our sector members
with staff reports, upcoming events, available staff positions, chapter activities and more. For a
sample copy of "Voice of the Alliance" contact our editor, Anne Zecca, via our website

MAIL FOR CAST AND CREW
Here's a recent note from JMS on the subject:
Just an FYI to those who've been using the Ventura Blvd. mail drop for fan mail
to actors....
As mentioned before, we're phasing out the forwarding of fan mail because we a)
don't have the resources, complicated by b) the actors have scattered to the
four winds, and it makes it very difficult to get everything to everybody in a
timely fashion.
So, having provided prior notice...fan mail to actors coming to the Ventura
Blvd. mail drop will be sent back. Mail to actors should be sent via their
official fan clubs. I will still be taking mail there, since it's my mailbox,
but that's it.
Just so's y'all know and save a few bucks on postage and returns.
