HARRY POTTER: According to Britain's The Sun, Jarvis Cocker is set to write the soundtrack for "Harry Potter
& The Goblet of Fire". Movie bosses apparently wanted a trendy British musician to score the new film rather than
utilising stalwart John Williams. The good news is that Cocker was the top choice by the various cast, including
Radcliffe for the job. A film insider says: "He is a very talented musician who is a big fan of movies and knows exactly
how they work. You may just think Jarvis is the bloke in specs who fronted Pulp but he is a man with many hidden depths".
IRON MAN: It seems that David Hayter's latest draft of "Iron Man" has won over New Line Cinema and the studio
is immediately going out with it to directors who can get the film up and running by early 2005. Sources have advised
them that this draft of Iron Man is very Tom Clancy-esque in tone and involves the conflict between Tony Stark and his
father Howard over Stark Industries. The Armored Avenger's origin has been updated from the Vietnam back story used
in the comics. Although Tom Cruise and Nicolas Cage had expressed interest in the role, both are very busy on other
projects, New Line has several other movie stars in mind.

FARSCAPE: SCIFI reports that FARSCAPE: PEACEKEEPER WARS delivered a 1.5 household rating and
1.7 million viewers in its Oct. 17 premiere, an 81 percent ratings improvement and a triple-digit increase in key
demographics versus the time period average for October 2003. The second night, Oct. 18, drew even more
viewers, with a 1.9 household rating and 2.1 million viewers. Overall, the four-hour miniseries, a continuation
of the Farscape series, averaged a 1.7 household rating and drew 1.9 million viewers in its 9 p.m.-11 p.m. timeslot,
making SCI FI the number-one nonsports cable network among adults aged 25-54 and 18-49 for the two nights.
Among viewers aged 25-54 and 18-49, SCI FI beat out TNT, TBS and Spike TV. PEACEKEEPER WARS delivered a
total audience of 6.9 million viewers over the two nights, with four telecasts of the first two-hour installment and
three telecasts of the second.
NEW SHOW RENEWALS: According to the Hollywood Reporter, "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost" have
been picked for a full season. Also getting a vote of confidence is NBC's "Medical Investigation," which has received
a back-nine episode pickup, too. A full-season order for another hit new drama, CBS' "CSI: NY" is said to be imminent.
SMALLVILLE: SMALLVILLE continues to bring characters from the DC Comics universe into the show. This
year we have seen Lois Lane (Erica Durrance) and last night, the future Flash, Bart Allen (Kyle Gallner). The November 3
episode will bring one of Superman's nemeses to Smallville, Mikail Mxyzptlk. Trent Ford ("How to Deal") will guest-star
as Mikail, a "foreign exchange student" who comes to Smallville and disrupts the lives of Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and
his friend Chloe (Allison Mack). In Superman lore, Mxyzptlk is a mischief-maker from the fifth dimension who periodically
pops up to torment the Man of Steel.
STAR WARS: Reports from Lucasfilm indicate that the anticipated teaser trailer for Star Wars: Episode III -
Revenge of the Sith will have its theaterical debut with Pixar's THE INCREDIBLES in the U.S. and Canada on November 5.
Members of StarWars.com Hyperspace can see it before then as the full teaser will make its world-wide debut on the site
the early afternoon (U.S.) of November 4. This exclusive member-only preview will be in high-quality QuickTime format.
Subscribers to AOL will also be able to see the trailer in streaming video formats starting November 4, and look for the
trailer on TV the evening of November 4. The public debut of the teaser trailer will happen on November 8th at StarWars.com.
MACGYVER: MACGYVER is finally coming to DVD. TVShowsOnDVD.com! reports that there are some
high-speed plans for this show, starring Richard Dean Anderson. Look for that series to not only
arrive on DVD in 2005, but to quickly hit a fast track and demand space on your shelves at home.
Plans can always change (expect us to repeat that another dozen or so times), but you can potentially
look for quarterly releases to arrive in January, April, August, and December.

THE 4400: According to the Hollywood Reporter, the USA Network has ordered a second season of
THE 4400, the record holder for the highest-rated series debut in basic cable history. Paramount Television will
begin production of 13 episodes in February in Vancouver in anticipation of a June launch. "4400" became a
surprise hit for USA in July, premiering to 7.4 million total viewers, eclipsing previous record holder "The Dead
Zone" by 1 million (HR 7/14). The six-hour series, which starred Joel Gretsch and Peter Coyote, chronicled UFO
abductees who returned to Earth with mysterious powers.
VAN HELSING: Released on DVD yesterday, VAN HELSING will contain a featurette on how filmmakers
brought the movie's signature monsters to life. Doug Griffin, the film's motion-capture supervisor, that he and the
technical magicians for the project came up with a few new tricks, such as grafting the real-life head and hair of
an actress onto the computer-animated winged body of a vampire bride as she flies over a village set that was
photographed in Prague months before. VAN HELSING, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale, is available
in regular DVD and a three-disc "ultimate collector's edition". The DVDs include hours of featurettes and behind-
the-scenes features. The "ultimate collector's edition" also includes an "Explore Frankenstein's Lab" feature, mini-
documentaries on each character, a "Track the Adventure: Van Helsing's Map" game, a music feature and a time-lapse
chronicle of the transformation of Dracula's Coffin Room into his Lab.
DOCTOR WHO: The new DR. WHO television series from the BBC has been updated and now shows this new
logo for the upcoming adventures of the Gallifreyian Time Lord. The site credits the graphic design team at BBC Wales
(specifically Louise Hillam, Alison Jenkins and Hywel Roberts) with designing the logo and Luke Davies and Paul
Humphrey at Insect Design for designing the background. Christopher Eccleston (28 DAYS LATER) portrays this
new incarnation of the Doctor. The BBC has ordered 13 episodes of the show to test the waters and see if interest
is there to make more. At the present time the show is slated for Broadcast on the British channel sometime in the
spring of 2005.
THE TIN MAN: The Sci Fi Channel has signed a development deal with Steven Long Mitchell and Craig Van
Sickle for a four-hour miniseries, which is said to put a sci-fi twist on "The Wizard of Oz". Mitchell and Van Sickle,
whose credits include "Medical Investigation" and "The Pretender," would executive produce and co-write "Tin Man."
In "Tin," a young girl named Dorothy gets lost in an alternate universe policed by law enforcement officers known
as Tin Men. In true "Wizard" fashion, she tries to find her way home with the help of three strangers she meets in
the mysterious land known as Outer Zone, or O.Z.

CAPTAIN KIRK SINGS: AP reports that Star Trek's Captain Kirk, William Shatner, will release a new
11-song CD of music this month. The new album, Has Been, features Shatner's choppy words set to music that
he co-wrote and performs with Ben Folds, who produced and arranged the new album. Musicians Joe Jackson,
Aimee Mann, Henry Rollins and Brad Paisley also make appearances. The songs vary from pianos to soul, from
gospel to cowboy, and Shatner's lyrics explore his fear of aging, the death of a loved one, reconnecting with
estranged children and the fickleness of fame.
THE ISLAND: According to the Hollywood Reporter, Djimon Hounsou and Steve Buscemi have joined the
cast of THE ISLAND, from DreamWorks and director Michael Bay. Hounsou (Constantine) will play the head of
security for the utopian community where the story takes place. No details were available on the Buscemi role.
THE ISLAND stars Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson in a story by Caspian Tredwell-Owen about a "harvested
being" (McGregor) who becomes self-aware and tries to escape the utopia where he is being kept. Johansson plays
the only person he can trust and the carrier of the sponsor's child. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci also co-wrote the
script.
FANTASTIC FOUR: 20th Century Fox has released the first look at Julian McMahon in character as
Victor Von Doom from the FANTASTIC FOUR movie. Doom is a billionaire industrialist and old college rival of
Reed Richards. In addition to funding Richards' trip to space, he also accompanies the future Fantastic Four
on the ship. Australian McMahon currently stars in the FX series Nip/Tuck, playing Dr. Christian Troy. His
other credits include Profiler and Charmed.
DEAD ASLEEP: Jonathan Liebesman, director of DARKNESS FALLS, will direct DEAD ASLEEP for New
Line Cinema. The Hollywood Reporter also indicated that the story was written by Carter Blanchard and centers
on a small town that becomes infested with a species of killer bugs that come out at night. They burrow inside
their victims' bodies, killing people from the inside.
ALIEN: The UK Teletext reports that British director Paul W. S. Anderson ("Alien vs. Predator", "Resident Evil")
is to write the sixth movie in the "Alien" franchise. Anderson, has apparently been asked by Twentieth Century Fox
to pen a new script featuring the creatures on their own (ie. no Predators). It is unknown as yet whether that includes
the return of Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) or not. The deal is simply to pen the script, not to direct as such
although that may happen thanks to the success of AVP.
SMALLVILLE: With the passing of Christopher Reeve, SMALLVILLE was left with deciding on how to handle
his character, Dr. Swann. Alfred Gough, executive producer of SMALLVILLE told The Post Gazette that they've decided
that Swann, like the actor who played him, will pass away. Margot Kidder, who's already filmed two episodes as
Bridgette Crosby, Dr. Swann's emissary, will continue as a link between the young Superman (Tom Welling) and Dr.
Swann's research about the teen's alien origins, on the show. When Reeve couldn't do the season opener, they bought
in Margot Kidder, the actors co-star in the "Superman" feature films. It now seems as if she is going to stick around.
"We thought she was a good person to help fill in around Dr. Swann, give him some other people [to work with]," Gough
said, "and our plan was to bring Chris back later in the season and have him in a scene with Margot and Tom." Now
Kidder's character will carry the Dr. Swann story forward. When asked about the effect Reeve's death would have on
the show, Gough said, "It won't have a hugely dramatic effect on our story lines, because, with the introduction of
Bridgette Crosby, it still gives you a link to that person," Gough said. "But there is some key information he was
going to provide, so now she'll provide it."
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: This original series from SCI FI, is set to debut this week on United Kingdom's
Sky One, and in January in the United States. Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore said in a recent interview, "For
those of us who take our sci-fi with a pinch of salt ... there are far more interesting things going on here." "There
is great safety in genre and, at a time when the American media stands accused of soft-peddliung news and hard-
selling patriotism, 'Battlestar Galactica' is taking some risks. Conceptually, the best science-fiction has always been
socially and politically relevant," Moore said. "The original 'Star Trek' was famed for that, as was 'The Twilight Zone.'"
Monday, October 18, 2004: BABYLON 5 NEWS: When asked about the B5 comic book JMS had talked about quite a while back, JMS
responded on the B5 moderated newsgroup with the following :
It's now being written, having waited for some other developments to take place, and will be turned into Wildstorm
in the first part of the year. (It's a 100 page graphic novel, so that takes a while.)

J.J. Abrams.
JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL: Screen rights to JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORRELL have been
acquired by New Line according to Variety. Susanna Clarke's best-selling fantasy novel, is set in 19th-century England
and deals with a master practitioner of real magic and his apprentice, who share an uneasy alliance when they channel
their powers in the war effort against Napoleon. Clarke, a former cookbook editor at Simon & Schuster, will be a producer
on the film, along with Nick Marston. Strange will be produced through Cuba Pictures, a company formed as an offshoot
of the British literary agency Curtis Brown.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: It was DreamWorks' SHARK TALE again in the #1 spot at the box office this weekend.
While most industry experts were expecting Paramount's TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE to open strong, the puppet
movie failed to pull the expected numbers, emerging with $12.3 M. DreamWorks' SHARK TALE locked up the lead spot
for the third weekend in a row. Buena Vista's FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS also retained its same spot from last week at number
two. The rest of the top 12 fall out in routine fashion. SKY CAPTAIN is at tenth spot and is just about to drop off the list; it
will probably exit theaters with around $40 M total for its grosses, well short of the film's estimated $70 M budget. Playing
at less than 700 theaters, Focus Features' SHAUN OF THE DEAD is still doing alright while RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE
breached the $50 M barrier at fifteenth overall. Here are the estimated box office receipts of the top twelve films from
October 15 through to October 17 with their weekend gross and the movie's total domestic gross to date:
1. SHARK TALE $22,100,000 - $119,820,000
2. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS $13,060,000 - $38,662,000
3. TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE $12,300,000 - $12,300,000
4. SHALL WE DANCE? $11,623,000 - $11,623,000

11. SHAUN OF THE DEAD $1,106,000 - $11,266,000
12. I HEART HUCKABEES $920,000 - $2,606,000
STAR WARS: Hollywood is finally awarding George Lucas a lifetime achievement award. The American Film
Institute announced Friday they'd bestow him that honor. Lucas will join the ranks of Jack Nicholson, Alfred Hitchcock,
Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Barbra Streisand and Robert DeNiro. Lucas, who's responsible for creating "Star Wars,"
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "American Graffiti," is getting the 33rd AFI Lifetime Achievement honor just as he wraps
the last and sixth part of his "Star Wars" series, scheduled for next summer.
SUPERMAN: With the passing of Christopher Reeve recently, it seems strange talking about a "new"
Superman, but rumors have been confirmed that unknown actor Brandon Routh will be donning the cape and tights
for the upcoming SUPERMAN film directed by Bryan Singer. Here is a coincidence for you. Brandon ‘B.J.’ Routh
stands at 6’ 2” and just days ago celebrated his 25th Birthday on October 9th. Sadly, this is the same day that
Christopher Reeve had fell into a coma and later died. Routh was born in Iowa, which is the same state that
George Reeves was born, one of the original silver screen Superman stars.
Sunday, October 17, 2004: I'M BACK! There is a lot to catch up on. So much happened in the two weeks I was in Rome and Vienna. It was
a great trip, but I am glad to be back home. I even met a B5 fan at one of my classes! Michael is in Moscow! Cool.
I will be pulling together the upcoming news and hope to get back to regular publication tomorrow. Have a fantastic

DISCUSSION TOPICS
Here is a suggestion from Ranger Gary -- who answered his own question -- and it is on the
Discussion Page.
Spanning the last 20 years of Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV, which three TV shows were most underrated/underappreciated and had
the plug pulled too soon (2 seasons or less)? Why did they deserve a longer life?
Alternatively, in your opinion which three shows during the same period lasted way too long and never should have made
it past their 1st season? Why should these 3 overrated TV shows should have expired ASAP?
Send in your thoughts and comments to sgbruckner@aol.com and I will post them on the
Discussion Page for everyone to share and enjoy. See what has come in so far. If you see an old topic
you want to respond to, go right ahead. We enjoy hearing from you.
BABYLON 5 SIGHTINGS
Ranger Anne reports that Christopher Neame (Knight Two) from Babylon 5's "And The Sky Full of Stars", was seen

CRUSADE DVD - COMING DECEMBER 7
Warner Bros Home Video has announced that the Babylon 5 spinoff, Crusade will hit DVD on
December 7. The series stars Peter Woodward, Gary Cole, Marjean Holden, Tracy Scoggins,
Daniel Dae Kim, David Allen Brooks and Carrie Dobro. This 13 episode series (576 mins)
will be released in a 4 disc set, and carries a suggested price of $59.98 US. It'll contain
an English Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track, along with English, French and Spanish subtitles.
The video will be presented in the original aspect ratio: 1.33:1. We have little information
on the special features, just that there will be audio commentaries and a documentary.
For those of you not familiar with CRUSADE, here is a synopsis of the plot:
In 2267 the Earth is quarantined, having been infected with a deadly plague by an attacking
alien force. Scientists estimate that it will kill every inhabitant within 5 years, not nearly
enough time for a cure to be developed. So the planet's only hope lies with the Excalibur, an
advanced prototype starship sent out to search ancient alien ruins for their former inhabitant's
secrets, hoping that somewhere out there a cure can be found.

SPECIAL CAST ACTIVITY
STEPHEN AUSTIN
Stephen Austin portrayed the wonderful Pak'Ma'Ra Ambassador on Babylon 5. He is part of a month-long comedy
tour of military bases. Stephen has enjoyed performing at military bases here at home and sent in this report to let us
know what he has been up to:
Hi All.
Computer time has been sparce and I don't have much now so I have to make this quick.
After we left Kyrgystan we went to a base called "K-2" in Uzbekystan. A former Soviet Air Base. Let me tell you, for an
old "cold war" vet such as myself, I never would have imagined ever visiting here. Let alone being up close and personal
with old Mig 25's and 27's. I'll post the pictures when I get home.
We had a great show at K-2 and then the next day left for Afghanistan via C-130 transport. We'll we are all safe and
sound. It is a very strange feeling to be here. This is officially a War Zone. Everyone wears a gun. Loaded and ready.
We've been based at the Bagwha Air Base about 30 miles outside of the capitol city of Kabul. We had a show yesterday
at one of the forward Fire Bases "Camp Phoenix", just outside Kabul. Did it outside on the back of a platform truck. A
real "Bob Hope" kinda moment. We had an audience of about 150. It was freezing but we went on and not a single
sole left until we we're done and then they wanted to hang around and talk with us and get autographs. What an
experience.
This is a very windy and dusty place. For those in L.A. it's like a constant Santa Ana Wind condition. It's tough on the
throat.
Everyone here has been great to us.
We do a show tonight here at Baghwa and then tom. it's off to Kandahar on the eastern part of the country. We do one
show there and then to Pakistan for a couple of days.
Gotta run. Miss you all. Be good to each other.

AMAZING STORIES: An old favorite is returning to newstands! Amazing Stories returns
with a September 2004 issue. Amazing Stories is one of the most beloved magazines in the
history of science fiction. Launched in 1926 under the watchful eye of legendary editor
Hugo Gernsback, Amazing Stories introduced generations of fans to exciting adventure and
equally exciting cover art. The magazine was published regularly (as a monthly, bimonthly
or quarterly) all the way up to 1995. It was revived briefly as a quarterly by Wizards of
the Coast (WotC) in 1998 but couldn't make it past the summer of 2000. Now WotC and Paizo
Publishing have revived Amazing Stories yet again with the "first issue of the 21st century!" -
issue #603 (September 2004), a slick magazine-sized monthly that hit newsstands on August 3,
2004. This new Amazing promises a much wider range of subject matter than its previous
incarnations. This isssue includes 20 pages of original fiction from luminaries such as
Harlan Ellison, Gene Wolfe and Bruce Sterling, it is also packs in news, reviews and
interviews covering feature films, DVDs, books, comics - even genre-related music CDs.

will want to go back and listen again.

United Federated Planets
The Babylon 5 Sector of United Federated Planets
The Babylon 5 Sector is a chartered branch of United Federated Planets (UFP); a not-for-profit
fan club for all fans of Star Trek, science fiction and fantasy. We've been part of UFP almost
from the time the series first went on the air. We welcome all fans of Babylon 5--from the series &
TV movies, to "Crusade" & "Legend of the Rangers," to the literary works in between.
Our parent organization, UFP, has its roots in Star Trek & the late Gene Roddenberry's vision of
the future; which includes community service along with social & fan-related activities. Our sector
takes those ideas and puts them into the Babylon 5 universe that J. Michael Straczynski created.
We're here for fellowship, good times, service and, in a way, living the fantasy that is Babylon 5.
To that end, we enjoy role-play via the written word & live action; costuming; discussions; literary
works; and anything else that we can imagine. No matter what you're interested in, we can accomodate
you. We have positions currently available on the sector staff--EarthDome, EarthForce and the Alliance;
chapter opportunities limited only by your imagination; and ways for you to live out your Babylon 5
fantasy. You can even be part of the B5 station staff! Our sector staff is available to answer your
questions about what we do, how to join, how to start a B5 chapter, and more. To contact us, visit
www.ufphq.com/chain_of_command.htm. In addition, we also put out a newsletter called "Voice of the
Alliance." This newsletter--available in electronic & hard copy formats--informs our sector members
with staff reports, upcoming events, available staff positions, chapter activities and more. For a
sample copy of "Voice of the Alliance" contact our editor, Anne Zecca, via our website

MAIL FOR CAST AND CREW
Here's a recent note from JMS on the subject:
Just an FYI to those who've been using the Ventura Blvd. mail drop for fan mail
to actors....
As mentioned before, we're phasing out the forwarding of fan mail because we a)
don't have the resources, complicated by b) the actors have scattered to the
four winds, and it makes it very difficult to get everything to everybody in a
timely fashion.
So, having provided prior notice...fan mail to actors coming to the Ventura
Blvd. mail drop will be sent back. Mail to actors should be sent via their
official fan clubs. I will still be taking mail there, since it's my mailbox,
but that's it.
Just so's y'all know and save a few bucks on postage and returns.
