TODAY'S NEWS
Saturday, February 5, 2005:
STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE:
With the UPN cancellation of STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE, the natural next question is -- will it be shopped around to
other networks? Executive Producer Rick Berman says that Paramount is not shopping the series to another
network. He indicated that the studio considered that option last year, when the fate of Enterprise hung in the
balance, but UPN ultimately renewed the struggling series for a fourth and now last season. "One of the greatest
things that Paramount has offered us over the last 18 years has been the kinds of budgets that have allowed us
to produce the show at the quality that it's been done," Berman said. "The budget that all of our Star Trek series
have demanded are the kinds of budgets that would be prohibitive on cable. So as of now the powers-that-be seem
to feel it's time to give the franchise a rest, and I think it's most likely a good idea." Sources indicate the show
costs as much as $1.6 million per episode to produce, for which UPN paid about half. To win renewal last year,
Paramount cut its fee to UPN, which resulted in some cost-cutting, which included shooting the series on high-definition
digital video instead of film.

pact with dark forces, gets double-crossed and battles the bad guys to protect the woman he loves. The movie

script. Shooting begins this month in Australia.

A CALL TO ARMS - THE MEMORY OF SHADOWS
Sites like Cinescape and IGN News have picked up the story and posted information. The
Keep B5 Alive site continues to gather new visitors as
people pull down their BABYLON 5 BUCKS to send to Warner Bros. to voice their support of the
project -- and the original cast members. If you haven't sent your letter yet?
A letter writing and media campaign is now underway. Go to
www.keepb5alive.com to find samples of
letters you can use to voice your support and encourage Warner Bros. to include the original
cast members in the upcoming movie. This is a call to action. Production is scheduled to
begin in April. We need to make our voices heard now. Write letters -- and include your
BABYLON BUCKS -- a way of showing your financial support to the project.
Ask your friends for support. If you are part of a science fiction group, ask for their
help as well. The more people who get involved, the better!
For more information on the project, go to
The Memory of Shadows page here at The Zocalo Today.

GRAPHIC NOVELS
LOST IN SPACE:
To commemorate the 40th annivesary of LOST IN SPACE, Bubblehead Publishing, is set to release a 360-page,
full-color graphic novel collecting and completing Bill Mumy's 12-part adventure LOST IN SPACE: VOYAGE TO THE
BOTTOM OF THE SOUL, a story originally published in serialized form by Innovation Publishing in 1992-93 but left
unfinished when the publisher went out of business.
Current plans call for Bubblehead to release the graphic novel in July at San Diego's Comic-Con International,
to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Lost in Space, the TV series, but advance pre-publication sales of the
book will be available on the company's internet commerce site
www.lisvoyage.com. .
Said Mumy: "I'm working with some great people on this project. I'm so glad
the original team is back to finish "Voyage to the Bottom of the Soul" properly. For over ten years fans have
been asking me how this huge story ended, wanting me to print the unpublished second half of the scripts
alone, but I didn't want to diminish the piece that way. Michal's artwork looks great and I'm very excited
about it. I've always been proud of this story. You don't have to be a fan of the old television show to get
into this book but those who are will especially enjoy it. It really advances the classic arc of Lost in Space."
COMIC BOOKS
IRON MAN:
Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Award-winning author Orson Scott Card and artist Andy Kubert will unite to
bring readers the definitive portrait of one the most fascinating characters to emerge from Marvel's Ultimate
line with the six-issue Ultimate Iron Man mini-series.
Card and his novels have enjoyed critical acclaim and commercial success for many years. The presence of
fan-favorite Kubert (Ultimate X-Men, 1602, Origin), plus the popularity of The Ultimates and Ultimates 2,
should ensure plenty of high-octane visuals throughout the mini-series.
Ultimate Iron Man #1 (JAN051798, $2.99) -- which starts to reveal how the brilliant Tony Stark became the
Ultimates' armored ally -- is scheduled to ship on March 2. To add even more luster to the event, the title will
ship with two foil covers -- a regular cover by Bryan Hitch and a variant cover by Kubert -- in a 50/50 ratio.
AMAZING SPIDERMAN #517
Amazing Spider-Man #517 will arrive in stores on Feb. 23 from Marvel Comics. The issue is written by J. Michael
Straczynski, with art by Mike Deodato Jr. and Mark Brooks, with a cover by Gary Frank.
Here's how Marvel describes the book:
"'Skin Deep,' part 3 of 4. When a former classmate of Peter Parker's is caught in a horrific experiment, he blames
Peter for the resulting transformation... But is Peter to blame? And how will Peter react when someone targets
his personal life instead of Spider-Man¹s life, for a change?"
Amazing Spider-Man #517 will be 32 pages and will cost $2.25

Here's a recent note from JMS on the subject:
Just an FYI to those who've been using the Ventura Blvd. mail drop for fan mail
to actors....
As mentioned before, we're phasing out the forwarding of fan mail because we a)
don't have the resources, complicated by b) the actors have scattered to the
four winds, and it makes it very difficult to get everything to everybody in a
timely fashion.
So, having provided prior notice...fan mail to actors coming to the Ventura
Blvd. mail drop will be sent back. Mail to actors should be sent via their
official fan clubs. I will still be taking mail there, since it's my mailbox,
but that's it.
Just so's y'all know and save a few bucks on postage and returns.
