SATURDAY, MAY 14, 2005:
NEW HERCULES:
Over the years, we've seen a number of "Hercules" stories. Producer Robert Halmi Sr.'s lavish Hallmark adaptation of the literary
classic will premiere Monday, May 16 on NBC. The three-hour TV movie stars Paul Telfer, a 27-year-old British newcomer. "When
I was first going up for [this part], you have all these associations with Hercules, that it's going be a certain type of movie that will
demand a certain type of performance," Telfer says. "I was really lucky. As soon as I received the script, I became much more excited
about the whole prospect ... although to be honest, if that hadn't been the case, I still would have done it because I was just so excited
about playing the lead in an American project." From the moment he is born, Hercules doesn't have many allies, not even his mother,
Alcmene (Elizabeth Perkins), the ruthlessly ambitious high priestess of Hera. The fact that Hercules' father, Zeus, is Hera's consort ignites
all kinds of treachery against the young hero, who can trust only his faithful companion, the bard Linus (Sean Astin), and nymph Deianeira
(Leelee Sobieski). "We've had a slew of both epic and comic-book movies lately, and they're great, but they all tend to tell a very similar
story of the hero's journey," Telfer says. "I liked that in this 'Hercules,' he wasn't presented as some kind of Superman archetype but
rather as the product of a very harsh upbringing. All of his rage and power are born out of this horrible start he has in life."
THE ISLAND:
DreamWorks Pictures has launched the updated website for director Michael Bay's futuristic action thriller
The Island, opening in theaters on July 22. At the site you're able to explore Merrick Biotech, view trailers, learn about the film, check
out new images and get downloads such as desktops, icons and a screensaver. Ewan McGregor (the Star Wars prequels, Moulin Rouge)
stars as Lincoln Six-Echo, one of society's many citizens who hope to be chosen to visit the Island, a place that is reportedly the last
uncontaminated spot on the planet. When Lincoln discovers that everything about his existence is a lie, he must run for his life and
escape from his controlled environment to the outside world. Lincoln doesn't have to make his flight alone, however. He's joined in his
efforts by the lovely Jordan Two-Delta, played by Lost in Translation's Scarlett Johansson. The talented cast of The Island also includes
Sean Bean (The Lord of the Rings) as the head of the Institute, Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator) as the head security officer pursuing Lincoln,
and Steve Busemi (Armageddon) as Lincoln's friend and mole in the Institute.
DARK CRYSTAL:
According to Variety, the Jim Henson Company is planning to make a sequel to its 1982 fantasy classic THE DARK CRYSTAL. Titled
THE POWER OF THE DARK CRYSTAL, the new movie is written by David Odell (The Dark Crystal, The Muppet Show) and Annette Duffy.
No director is yet attached to the film which starts shooting this fall for a 2007 release. It will combine live-action animatronic
characters with CG animation. The story is set many years after the original, which was helmed by Frank Oz and Jim Henson. Original
heroes Jen and Kira are now king and queen, and must fight to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again split.
BATMAN SOUND TRACK:
The front and back cover art for the upcoming BATMAN BEGINS soundtrack were released by Warner Bros. The score, by award
winning composers James Newton Howard (The Village, The Fugitive) and Hans Zimmer (Gladiator, The Lion King), is set for release
on June 14, one day before the film hits theaters.
THE APOSTLE:
According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Carpenter, director of "Escape from New York" and "The Thing", is dusting off his Nikon for
THE APOSTLE, a thriller about a Pittsburgh detective and a stockbroker, as they try to solve the mystery behind a string of gruesome murders.
The film marks Carpenter's first film since 2001 dud "Ghosts of Mars". Carpenter discovered the script for the film, written by Paul Margolis,
when it was submitted for consideration as a 'John Carpenter Presents' episode.
FLIGHTPLAN:
Jodie Foster returns to the big screen with FLIGHTPLAN -- slated for release on September 23. Directed by Robert Schwentke and
produced by Brian Grazer's Imagine, FLIGHTPLAN is a thriller said to be in the vein of Alfred Hitchcock. Jodie Foster plays Kyle Pratt,
a mother whose daughter mysteriously vanishes right in the middle of a cross-atlantic flight from Berlin to New York. The incident
occurs shortly after the death of her husband and Pratt soon finds herself struggling to prove her own sanity. The captain (Sean
Bean) and Air Marshall (Peter Sarsgaard) try to believe her story, but all the evidence they can find indicates that Pratt's daughter
was never aboard the plane. Pratt finds herself all alone as she struggles to uncover the mystery of her daughter's traceless
disappearance. Nearly the entire film takes place in the claustrophobic environment of an airplane 37,000 feet in the air.

COMIC BOOKS
NEW TITLES HEADED YOUR WAY:
Dynamic Forces, the parent company of Dynamite Entertainment, announced on Thursday an agreement with Universal Studios
Consumer Product Group to release comics based on the modern version of Battlestar Galactica. The comic series will launch this
fall. No creators were announced.
"We are confident in Dynamite Entertainment's ability to develop and distribute high-quality comics that will build off of the strength
and staying power of this great property," said Cynthia Modders, senior vice president of sales and retail development at Universal
Studios Consumer Products Group.
Battlestar Galactica was re-imagined by Sci Fi Channel and NBC Universal Television Studio in December 2003 in the form of a
four-hour mini-series event. Battlestar Galactica became the most-watched cable miniseries of the year and led Sci Fi to continue
with a one-hour weekly series.

on the wrong side of a number of very large firearms, making the first issue a case study in how to mix intense,
Whedon-style character interaction with cinematic action and violence.

J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI'S DREAM POLICE
Someone asked where DREAM POLICE could be ordered. I found a couple of places on the internet where they were taking
pre-orders. Forbidden Planet in the UK is one; Mile High Comics here in the US is another place.
I'd mentioned a while back that I would remind folks when the stores
would begin taking orders for Dream Police...so this is it.
Dream Police will appear as a one-shot on June 22nd, but Marvel has a
tendency to print to orders, so if you don't order it up front, it may
not be available. Apparently interest is high, so I have a sneaking
suspicion this one may disappear fast.
Basically, the premise of Dream Police -- which has been in the works
for a long time now, and finally seeing print -- is that we all enter
the dreamscape when we fall asleep, and the denizens of said dreamscape
all play their roles...but when someone doesn't do their job, or a
crime against dreamers is committed, the Dream Police come in.
The thing is...the Dream Police are plain clothes detectives and beat
cops who walk, talk and behave like characters out of the Maltese
Falcon, or Dragnet, or Adam 12, that very literal, staccato, clipped
back-and-forth style of dialogue.
So what you've got is a very funny, weird, surreal book that puts these
very noir characters up against the dreamscape...and I'm just pleased
as punch with the result.
Hence, this recommendation. There's no long arc to sign onto, just the
one issue, but it's just a hoot and a half to read. It's from Marvel
under the Icon imprint, and I commend it highly to all B5 folks.
