What's New Today
Friday, May 9:ANGEL: According to the Hollywood Reporter, the WB is likely to be renew ANGEL when the network unveils its fall slate
next week.
TIMELINE: The title of this upcoming SF adaptation of Michael Crichton's time travel novel could have a totally different
meaning for director Richard Donner. World events, production delays and reshoots have pushed the release date from April 11 to
November 26,. Donner said in a recent interview that he is now mixing sound and scoring the film and expects to deliver a negative
to the studio at the end of June. TIMELINE suffered two years of production delays even before principal photography began. After
settling on Wales for medieval locations during preproduction in March 2000, filmmakers came up against the United Kingdom's foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. "Everything was in quarantine, so we were shut down." Donner said. A potential actor's strike in
early 2001 spooked Paramount, so the studio shut down the film until the threat of a strike was over. In the fall of 2001, TIMELINE
was gearing up to go to Berlin when the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks occurred. With the issue of security looming large, Donner eventually settled on a farmyard 90 minutes outside of Montreal, where production finally started in April 2002 and wrapped the following
September. Donner undertake five days of reshoots to add scenes clarifying the movie's time travel in response to test audience
confusion. "It seems to have made a big difference," Donner said.
DEATHLANDS: FIRST WAVE fans will be happy to see Traci Elizabeth Lords in the upcoming SCI FI Channel original movie DEATHLANDS: HOMEWARD BOUND, based on James Axler's popular post-apocalyptic Deathlands books. "It's about the end of the world," Lords said in an interview. "It's timely. Visually, with the red-tinting, it's pretty interesting." Lords talked about her character, saying
"Lady Rachel Cawdor is basically the queen of the underworld or, actually, the queen of the New World. I think she's deliciously evil."
DEATHLANDS: HOMEWARD BOUND, which co-stars Vincent Spano, debuts at 9 p.m. ET on May 17.
BUFFY: The WB has released more pics from the BUFFY finale. Take a look over at Comics Continuum. Nathan Fillion from FIREFLY
looks marvelously evil!

JIM HENSON CO.: The company that brought us Sesame Street and FARSCAPE has come back to the Henson family.
EM.TV & Merchandising AG has agreed to sell Jim Henson Co. to the children of Muppets creator Jim Henson for $89 million. According
to Reuters, the deal ends a nearly two-year hunt for a buyer. Among the suitors were Walt Disney Co., children's programming magnate
Haim Saban and former TV executive Dean Valentine. Five Henson siblings will sit on the 45-year-old company's board. Two of them,
Brian and Lisa Henson, would help manage Henson. EM.TV.
FANTASTIC FOUR: With the success of other comic book oriented movies like Spider-Man, Daredevil and X-Men,
20th Century Fox is looking at a 2004 release for the FANTASTIC FOUR. Marvel CEO Avi Arad has said that the FANTASTIC
FOUR film was currently being targeted for a November 4, 2004 release. However, the JoBlo website indicates that there is no

INDIANA JONES: Good news for fans of the INDIANA JONES series. The trilogy is finally slated for worldwide DVD release
on Nov. 4 as The Adventures of Indiana Jones—The Complete DVD Movie Collection. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the four-disc box set will include a disc specifically dedicated to bonus materials for the movies, produced by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg. These bonus materials will include a documentary crafted by Laurent Bouzereau, who has gone behind the scenes on Lucas projects like American Graffiti and Spielberg projects such as Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The discs will not feature director's commentary tracks for the films, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The set will be available in both widescreen and full-screen versions from Paramount Home Entertainment, the collection has no suggested retail price, but is expected to be available for about $49.95 in the United States.
EPISODE III: Few composers have reached the prominence of John Williams. He has produced some of the most marvelous
musical scores in film history. He recently told CNN.com to expect echoes of the music from the first film in the upcoming prequel Episode III, which wraps up the saga. Williams said he hopes to use hints of some of the musical themes from Episode IV: A New Hope to link the
three prequel movies with the original trilogy. "I think working backwards, some musical hints like that will be appropriate. I am looking forward to bringing all those thematic fragments together in the final episode of Star Wars and to pick up what opportunities it'll have for
new material, also to sort of round out a whole corpus of musical themes that are all interrelated and connected." Episode III is set to begin production this year, with a 2005 release date.
GODS AND GENERALS: Bruce Boxleitner's latest film, GODS AND GENERALS, will be released in a 2-disc DVD set on July 15. The
set will include commentaries by the film's director and by Civil War battle experts; an introduction by Ted Turner, the film's producer;
two music videos; the film's trailer; the BET special "Journey to the Past"; featurettes about the authenticities of the film and about the life
of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. The disc will also be DVD-ROM enabled. Warner will also make available on DVD ANDERSONVILLE, a TV movie about the infamous Georgia prison during the height of the Civil War.
SMALLVILLE: Over at Comics Continuum, SMALLVILLE Executive Producer Alfred Gough talks about what is ahead in the season finale of SMALLVILLE and
what is down the road for Clark Kent next year. Now that the series has wrapped, Gough and partner Miles Millar are working on the
script for the Iron Man movie.

X-2: The totals are in for this weekend's box office and X2 earned a whopping $155.2 million worldwide in its May 2 opening weekend. This is the fourth-biggest premiere in movie history. With $85.9 million in North America alone, the debut trailed only last
year's $114.8 million debut by Spider-Man and the premieres of the two Harry Potter movies. X2 opened in 93 foreign territories in the biggest "day-and-date" release in history, meaning that it opened simultaneously in theaters across the globe. The robust premiere
exceeded the first X-Men film's July 2000 opening of $54.5 million.
MATRIX RELOADED: There are a lot of movies coming out in the next few weeks and one that a lot of people have been
anticipating is the next installment of MATRIX. Unfortunately the folks at TIME magazine haven't heard about spoiler information
or spoiler warnings! According to Cinescape, the May 13 issue of the magazine lays out almost every major story twist in the movie.
So beware!
ALEXANDER: After portraying Hannibal the cannibal, Anthony Hopkins is moving along to another historical role -- that
of ALEXANDER. This Oliver Stone project will have Hopkins play a Macedonian general who becomes an Egyptian pharaoh in the epic
telling of Alexander the Great. Principal photography is expected to begin in July. Morocco is the primary location for the project, but
it will also shoot in London. Colin Farrell also stars in this project.
BUFFY: Over at Coming Soon, a number of the BUFFY cast talk about their last day of filming. Series creator Joss Whedon promised a complicated wrap-up.
"We don't resolve every single subplot completely because that's not the way life works," Whedon said.
Monday, May 5: RATINGS: Top 10 SCIFI Channel Shows: Scare Tactics 1.4; Riverworld 1.4; Red Planet 1.4; Tremors: The Series 1.3;

X-MEN: According to The Hollywood Reporter, "X2: X-Men United" captured an estimated opening-weekend gross of $85.9
million, the fourth-largest three-day nonholiday session ever. Only Sony's 2002 release "Spider-Man" and Warner Bros. Pictures' "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (2001) and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" (2002) have opened bigger, bowing with $114.8 million, $90.3 million and $88.4 million, respectively. The opening for the "X-Men" sequel was a staggering 58% higher than that for the original film, which debuted with $54.5 million in July 2000 -- and some industry observers noted that Fox's Sunday estimates were on the low side, so the final gross might be higher when calculated today. "X2" launched in a record 3,741 theaters -- topping the 3,682 in which "Chamber" bowed in November -- and averaged a sterling $22,962 per venue. The PG-13 rated title is the sixth consecutive movie based
on a Marvel Comics character to debut at No. 1. In single-day rankings, the Friday opening for "X2" proved the third-biggest ever at an estimated $31.2 million, behind those of "Spider-Man" ($39.4 million) and "Chamber" ($32.3 million).
Sunday, May 4: BABYLON 5 MOVIES TODAY ON SCIFI: Don't forget to take in the Babylon 5 movies on SCIFI
today. Too bad A CALL TO ARMS isn't included, but that's something for the next run of the movies.
The schedule is below.
NOT MUCH NEWS: It's Sunday and with that, most of the news sites are closed for the weekend.
Time to kick back with a good book -- or comic book -- and veg out a little. I picked up the CSI
series yesterday as I went out for Free Comic Book Day. I like it! Hope you all went out and picked
up your quota of freebies! Great way to get people interested in reading comic books -- especially
the little folks. Love Donald Duck and Batman!
WELCOME and THANKS: There are a lot of new readers to The Zocalo Today and I just want to say
WELCOME and I hope you'll come back often and participate in the discussion topics we have here. I'll
be opening up the review page with comments people are sending along of the new Season Two B5 DVD.
So far, people are enjoying what they are finding there. Thanks WB, both for getting the DVD together
with extras -- and for advertising the DVD. I watch the WB a lot and I've seen the promo a bunch of
times. It is wonderful!
Saturday, May 3: BABYLON 5 IN THE NEWS: Well, this might fall under the better late than never category. There is a wonderful article on
Babylon 5 out at UPI. All of us will enjoy
reading it -- and you can't help but think -- had this been written when the series was actually on the air, would it have made a
difference?
FREE COMIC DAY- TODAY! Free Comic Day is a way to bring new readers into stores by giving away free comics from nearly
all of the comic publishers, and a way to thank fans by allowing them to try out different titles they might be overlooking. How can you not like that? Among the dozens of titles being given away TODAY are ULTIMATE X-MEN #1 by Marvel Comics; BATMAN ADVENTURES #1 by DC Comics; WAY OF THE RAT SPECIAL #1 from CrossGen Comics; FRANK MILLER'S ROBOCOP / STARGATE SG1 #1 from Avatar Press; ARCHIE & FRIENDS from Archie Comics; IGNITE from Rocket Comics; TRANSFORMERS: ARMADA from DreamWave Publishing;

signing nearby and get more information about the event.
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA: As X2 opens around the country and Alan Cummings (Nightcrawler) makes his way around
doing promotional interviews, he talked about his upcoming project, PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, a film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd
Webber's musical. "I'm not going to be the phantom," Cumming said in an interview. "I'm going to be someone else." When asked what
he will bring to Phantom, Cumming replied, "Pizazz, lots of pizazz. I'm looking forward to working with Joel (Schumacher)." Phantom of the Opera goes into production in October.
STARGATE SG-1: Amanda Tapping, Maj. Samantha Carter on Stargate SG-1, is really looking forward to season seven of the
series. In the episode currently under production, "Space Race", she get to showcase Carter's rarely seen action chops. In a recent
interview, she said, "It's kind of a video-game episode, and Sam engages in this space race in this ship with an alien that we'd encountered
last season." Stargate SG-1 will debut on SCI FI June 13.
JOHN DOE: While Fox hasn't made up it's mind about renewing JOHN DOE, Dominic Purcell, star of the series, told SCI FI Wire
that the cast and crew are optimistic that the show will be renewed for a second season. "Everyone thinks it's got a great chance of coming back. People really love the show. It's doing really well in the demographics." The network is expected to make a decision on the show this month. Now if Fox would only show the series over the summer, even more folks could discover this gem of a series!
ENTERPRISE: Variety reports that the ratings for ENTERPRISE were down in the first week of May sweeps by a big 39 percent
in the 18-49 demographic, compared with its opening-week May performance of a year earlier.
PUNISHER: While shooting doesn't begin until this summer on THE PUNISHER, Marvel Studios executive vice president Kevin Feige told E! Online to expect a new trailer for the upcoming film adaptation to accompany prints of THE HULK movie, which opens
June 20. PUNISHER, based on the Marvel vigilante series, stars Thomas Jane (Dreamcatcher) as Frank Castle. "There's a teaser coming
out that I swear is going to bring the house down, whether you know who the character is or not," Feige told the site. For a peek at Jane
in character, go to http://www.cinescape.com/0/editorial.asp?aff_id=0&this_cat=Movies&action=page&obj_id=38458.
ALIAS: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer Garner from ALIAS has replaced Gwyneth Paltrow in the upcoming
HAPPY ENDINGS, an independent feature slated for production this summer. Don Roos has written the script and is set to direct the film. Garner play a woman dating a man and his son in the film that follows three intertwining stories set in Los Angeles.

Over at SciFi Dimensions you can read a review of the Season
Two DVD. I think you'll agree with this closing comment:
Babylon 5: The Complete Second Season firmly establishes this show as one of the great all-time franchises in science fiction. Every self-respecting fan owes it to himself or herself to own this DVD series.
AND while there, you can register to win either a Season One DVD or the Season Two DVD. Good luck!
The WB has started to promote the new Season Two DVD and they have sent out a lot of promotional material to a number of
folks hosting Babylon 5 sites. I received the press release below as well as stills and some segments from the actual DVD. They
are FANTASTIC. It is SO wonderful to see all these folks again -- talking about their Season Two experiences with Babylon 5.
Rather than me try to deal with all the material, Monica over at The Abyss has already put in a considerable amount of effort to
pull them together -- and done a marvelous job of it! Thanks Monica. Go to http://abyss.hubbe.net/b5/dvds/boxed-s2promos.html
to look at the materials the WB has pulled together on the series. The Season One DVD was good -- this one looks like a winner as well.
Did you notice that there is a gag reel included? I can't wait to see that one!!:

Babylon 5 won two Emmys (Groundbreaking Visual Effects and Makeup) and earned the 1999 Saturn Award for Best Genre Cable/Syndicated Series from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films (Hugo Awards). Today, Babylon 5 continues its mission with episodes syndicated on the Sci-Fi Channel, which also recently aired the new Babylon 5 feature, Legend of the Rangers. CALLING ALL GRID EPSILON IRREGULARS
Wow, that's a term I haven't used in a long time!
With the coming 10th anniversary of the airing of "The Gathering", Ranger Desi and other GEIs would like to get back in touch. The GEIs were the original fans of the show -- before there was a show. They gathered over on the old GEnie site and chatted with Joe and others about Babylon 5 before it hit the airwaves. If you are one of those lucky few -- an original GEI -- please go to http://worldsofjms.com/b5/gei.htm . If you would like to contact Ranger Desi, her e-mail is: dlcarroll@sc.rr.com.
RANGER SIGHTINGS
Ranger Steve reports:
Two Saturdays ago, David L. Crowley (Lou Welch) appeared briefly as a private security guard on The Agency. He was a baggage X-ray front lobby guard at this company (which, incidentally, was owned by a billionaire played by David Cassidy) that was conspiring to assassinate a Saudi prince. I don't recall if he had a speaking part, but you gotta love Lou!
And two or three weeks ago (I think it was 4/17), Whip Hubley (Ranger #1 on Signs & Portents) was on an episode of C.S.I. Miami. He played a father whose son was involved in a Columbine-like gang of students plotting a school shooting.
DISCUSSION TOPIC
The BBC reported that "I’ll be back," Arnold Schwarzenegger's line from 1984's The Terminator, was voted the best parting shot in movie history in a poll conducted by Odeon Cinemas in the United Kingdom. What do you think the BEST Babylon 5 would be? I know, there are tons of them, but give that a thought and send in your votes. Let's limit the voting to 5 and let's see what happens!
Send in your best quotes to sgbruckner@aol.com. I'll post the responses on the Discussion Page for everyone to share.
BABYLON 5 CHRONOLOGY
I've put up another wonderful segment of the Babylon 5 Chronology. This segment begins with 2249. Go to 23rd
Century.
I noticed that JMS used a section of Terry's chronology to answer a question the other day about Morden/Anna's trip over on the B5
moderated newsgroup.
A BIG THANK YOU and note appreciation goes to Terry for taking the time (and considerable effort) to pull the chronology together -- and
for updating it to include CRUSADE, the novels and other relevant Babylon 5 material. THANKS TERRY!

J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI: For those of you who just can't get enough from JMS, there is a long, but interesting
interview in Sketch Magazine at http://www.hypethis.com/interviews/interview_jmichaelstraczynski.html.
BEATA POSNIAK DANIELS: Beata Posniak's (President Luchenko from B5) recent project, a film entitled MNEMOSYNE which she directed, will be shown at the opening the 4th Annual Film Polish Festival at the Academy this month at the Leammle's Monica 4-plex Theater in Santa Monica from April 25 to May 1, 2003. The film "Mnemosyne" is based on the ancient poem "Thunder, Perfect Mind" - a visual journey of the human race, exploring where we have been and what we can become. We are taken on this journey through the voice and body of Mnemosyne, Mother of Memory. Mnemosyne bears witness to the forces of destruction as well as of creation, revealing through art, the multi-dimensionality of women. The film is a homage to power, strength and individualism.
BILL MUMY: Bill will be releasing his 5th solo CD in April on Renaissance Records. GHOSTS will be a compilation of songs (the best of) taken from the first four CD's plus a few brand new ones. The brand new songs include "Always Open", "Take it Back", "The Recalcitrant Princess" and "Just A Drop of Rain in the Ocean." Angela Cartwright from Lost in Space will design the package. The album will be available through Amazon.com and other internet sites as well as a few of the bigger stores.
RICHARD BIGGS: Ranger Jan reports that Richard Biggs gave out some very good news at MegaCon last week. He has landed a
recurring role on SCIFI's TREMORS. He will also be coming back to STRONG MEDICINE.

Sometimes you just can't find the e-mail address for someone you know you have -- it's someone who responded
to a discussion topic or you met in one of the chat rooms. You'd like to send a personal note, but .... No

We've started a White Pages of Zocalo Readers! It's a handy way of keeping track of people -- and putting together
a birthday/greeting card list as well. If you would like to be part of the listing, just send me your name,
state, e-mail address and (if you'd like to have it listed) birthday (without year) to sgbruckner@aol.com.

An original novel based on the hit comic book series! It covers the events that happened in issues #9-16.
SUPREME POWER
This is a new title J. Michael Straczynski has been working on for Marvel. Originally titled "Squadron Supreme", it is now called
"Supreme Power". According to JMS, publication date in July 16.
JMS described the series in a comment to the B5 moderated newsgroup as:
Supreme Power is an updating of the Squadron Supreme book done quite a while back by Mark Gruenwald. It was one of the first books, possibly the first book, to really examine the role of the superhero in society, and as such is generally considered to have paved the way for such later works as Watchmen, Dark Knight, Marvels, Kingdom Come and others.
Marvel said, basically, if you could take those characters, who were used at a time when comics were still quite a bit more restrictive than now, due to the comics code and other influences, and update them, recast them, free to do whatever you want...what would you do?
Hence, Supreme Power. While it has its moments of dark humor, it's a very intense, serious book. And because it's being done for the Marvel Max line -- which is aimed at mature readers -- there are very few limitations in terms of imagery and language. Marvel has said it wants me to take this book to the wall, and that's pretty much where I intend to go.
Interestingly, unlike the aforemtentioned titles, this isn't a limited series...it's intended to be an ongoing series, while trying to sustain the kind of intensity you get in that kind of limited edition. It's a massive writing challenge, though one of my main goals is to do right by Mark's original creation.

BRIGHT
Rising Stars: Bright #3 will arrive in stores on Wednesday from Image Comics. The issue is written by Fiona Avery, penciled by Dan
Jurgens, inked by Jason Gorder and art by John Starr.
Rising Stars: Bright #3 will be 32 pages and will cost $2.99.
RISING STARS: BRIGHT #1
(W) Fiona Avery, (P) Dan Jurgens, (I) Jason Gorder.
"Mercy." In the hit series, Rising Stars, it is mentioned that at one time, Matthew Bright ran away from Pederson and, under an assumed name, became a member of normal society and a police officer. Join us as Matthew tells this story in his memoirs and learn how a Special can shine brightest when they're just being human. FC 32 pages $2.99 Part 1 of 3 .
BRIGHT #2
(W) Fiona Avery (P) Dan Jurgens.
"Authority." Matthew Bright is still living under the assumed name of Brendan Miller, and making close friendships with Frank and Jess in the precinct, when a new serial killer case erupts in the NYPD. Matt really takes the case to heart upon discovering that the serial killer has Specials in mind whenever he causes new carnage in the streets of suburban New York. In the second part of three issues, Matthew's secret identity as Brendan Miller is about to be ripped from him and his true nature as a special is revealed. 32 pages, $2.99.
BABYLON 5 NOVEL
DelRey is reprinting the original Babylon 5 novels. They started with
#7 - Jeanne Cavelos' THE SHADOW WITHIN. Here's one I've been waiting for -- Kathryn Drennan's TO DREAM IN THE CITY
OF SORROWS. The release date is scheduled for July 29, 2003. I love the new cover art! It can be pre-ordered from www.amazon.com. For those of you who love Babylon 5, this one reads just like an episode from the series. You just can't put it down.
SCI FI PUBLICATIONS
Cult Times #92: While Best of the British is the title of this issue, there are a number of articles that should attract others -- namely
an interview with Luke Perry from JEREMIAH and Anthony Michael Hall from THE DEAD ZONE.
TV Zone #162: With the end coming for BUFFY, most of the SF magazines will sport covers of the cast and TVZone is right in line
with the entire cast. Emma Caulfield looks back on five years with the series while Director Michael Wood from STARGATE SG-1
looks back on season six and some of his early stories.
Expose Special #77: This special issue is a review of 2002. With Harry Potter #2, Lord of the Rings and Terminator 3,
they also look at Star Trek: Nemesis, FIREFLY, Buffy and Dinotopia.
Starburst #298: ANGEL's new season is the focus of the issue. David Boreanaz talks about what makes the show so special to him. Also in this
issue, a behind the scenes look at MATRIX RELOADED. Another show with changes ahead is SMALLVILLE. Alfred Gough and Miles Millar talk about what is in store for the next season.
BABYLON 5 BOOK OF QUOTES
For all those who submitted quotes and experiences to the Babylon 5 Book of Quotes, word from JMS is that
the book, plus emails and suggestions, is being compiled now, and they're targeting February, the 10th anniversary
of B5, for the publication date.

MAIL FOR CAST AND CREW
Here's a recent note from JMS on the subject:
Just an FYI to those who've been using the Ventura Blvd. mail drop for fan mail
to actors....
As mentioned before, we're phasing out the forwarding of fan mail because we a)
don't have the resources, complicated by b) the actors have scattered to the
four winds, and it makes it very difficult to get everything to everybody in a
timely fashion.
So, having provided prior notice...fan mail to actors coming to the Ventura
Blvd. mail drop will be sent back. Mail to actors should be sent via their
official fan clubs. I will still be taking mail there, since it's my mailbox,
but that's it.
Just so's y'all know and save a few bucks on postage and returns.
