What's New Today

Friday, June 14:

VACATION: I will be off on a little vacation starting tomorrow, so updates here at the Z will slow. So if you don't see much going on in the next week, you'll know why. Take care.

RATINGS: Top 10 SF Network Shows: The X-Files 7.5; Smallville 3.5; Charmed 3.3; Buffy 3.2; Enterprise 3.1; Angel 2.8; Roswell 2.0; Touched by an Angel 0.8; Mysterious Ways 0.6, and Twice in a Lifetime 0.5. Source: Nielsen Galaxy Report, 5/13/02 - 5/19/02.

STAR TREK: In the Star Trek environment, your work is never done! Producer Rick Berman told SCI FI Wire that Star Trek Nemesis, the 10th ST feature film, is looking good and is right on schedule for release in December. "The studio [Paramount] is very, very pleased. Actually, the only notes we've gotten from the studio were to put some stuff back in that we'd taken out of the film." Right now they are in the editing phase, where they add the title sequence and special effects as well as the sound.

JURASIK PARK IV: Yes, I know. We just told you yesterday that Steven Spielberg isn't going to do any more sequels -- except Indiana Jones. Well today is a new day and I guess the story idea that has come along is just too good to pass up. Spielberg told Starlog magazine that he's eager to produce a fourth Jurassic Park movie; he will not direct it though. He said, "I would hope that I could get Joe Johnston [who helmed Jurassic Park III] to direct this one, too, but it's up to him. We actually have a wonderful story that I think is the best story since the very first movie. In fact, I wish it were the third story instead of the fourth one. It came late, but it is actually the best story I've heard for a dinosaur movie since the Michael Crichton book."

BOOKPALS: Here is something wonderful you may want to try out. Sean Astin from Lord of the Rings, Tia & Tamera Mowry, Bradley Whitford, Jane Kaczmarek and Amanda Bynes can be seen and heard online starting today (June 13) as they read wonderful children's books for the entire family. The special educational, fun program is being made available to the public by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Foundation and the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications. The SAG Foundation is the charitable arm of the Screen Actors Guild that has reached the community at large with its nationally recognized BookPALS program for which SAG members lend their talents of book reading to children in schools. Visit the site at www.bookpals.net. This is fun at any age!

STARGATE: Don't forget to watch Part II of REDEMPTION tonight on SCIFI -- at 9pm ET.

INSIDE SCIFI THIS WEEK:

Thursday, June 13:

STEVEN SPIELBERG: Despite having won five Saturn Awards for A.I. Artificial Intelligence, having fans clamor for new ETs or BACK TO THE FUTUREs, Steven Spielberg said at the awards ceremony that there is only one sequel in his future -- Indiana Jones. "There'll never be another Back to the Future. There'll never be another E.T. [the Extra-Terrestrial]. I won't do another Close Encounters [of the Third Kind]." Spielberg said, "The great thing about science fiction is it celebrates the imagination. Science fiction is great for originals. So hopefully I'll be producing a lot of original sci-fi for you to make up for the sequels I'm not making." Amen.

BEASTMASTER: After three years of searching for his family and battling evil at every turn, Beastmaster, the a man who can talk to animals, has ended its run. The series starred Daniel Goddard as Dar, the last male of the legendary Sula tribe. During season two, he was joined by Marjean Holden, who you will remember as Dr. Sarah Chambers from Crusade. She and Jackson Raine (whoi played by Tao). They helped Dar in his battles against mythical monsters, sorcerers and other evildoers. The show was based on the Beastmaster novels by Andre Norton and the films starring Marc Singer, who guest starred during the final season. In the final episode, "A New Dawn," Dar faces his final challenge before finally being reunited with his family.

SATURN AWARDS: While the main focus was giving awards to some of the finest science fiction around, it was also a time for many to drop hints about upcoming projects. Dean Devlin talked about finding a concept they liked for INDEPENDENCE DAY 2; Joss Whedon talked about going to England to shoot some footage with Anthony Stewart Head for the season premiere, Stan Winston talked about the drop-dead effects coming in TERMINATOR 3, Robert Englund talked about JASON VS. FREDDY!

FULL MOON FRIGHT NIGHT: Sci Fi Channel wanted to start a late-night series of B-grade horror movies. OK, there are plenty of those around, now they need a host! They have gone to William Shatner for that task. Thomas Vitale, Sci Fi's senior vice president of program acquisitions and scheduling said, "We're pleased to give William Shatner a weekly opportunity to do one of the things he does best -- ham it up to the delight of audiences everywhere." The 13-film series will kick off at 11 p.m. Saturday, July 20. All the movies in the series will be from the library of Full Moon Pictures -- hence the series title. We'll see such "classics" as "Trancers," "Puppet Master" and "Horrorvision."

DEAD ZONE: The commercials for DEAD ZONE look terrific over at USA Network. For those of you curious about this upcoming series, there's an interview with star Anthony Michael Hall over at http://www.zentertainment.com/article.php?sid=3830&mode=thread&order=0. The series premieres Sunday, June 16 at 10pm/9pm on USA Network.

Wednesday, June 12:
AMAZING SPIDERMAN: Issue #41 is out on stands now. Be sure to pick up your copy soon, before they are all gone.

RATINGS: Top 10 SF Syndicated Series: The X-Files 2.8; Andromeda 2.6; Stargate SG-1 2.6; 3rd Rock 2.1; John Edward 2.1; Buffy 2.0; Mutant X 2.0; Earth: Final Conflict 1.8; Relic Hunter 1.8, and Beastmaster 1.6. Source: Nielsen Galaxy Report, 5/13/02 - 5/19/02.

SATURN AWARDS: A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE walked away with a number of awards, including best SF film at the 26th annual Saturn Awards ceremony in Los Angeles June 10. The film gathered in a total of five Saturn Awards, including best writing, best younger actor, best special effects and best music. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS took home three awards, including best fantasy film, best director and best supporting actor. SCIFI must be happy with the showing of FARSCAPE. They won best syndicated/cable TV series; Ben Browder won best actor. UPN's Buffy the Vampire Slayer took the prize for best network series. Complete details are available at www.scifi.com.

ANGEL: Joss Whedon told SCI FI Wire that Angel's Charisma Carpenter will indeed return for The WB series' fourth season in the fall. He said, "She is coming back. She's a part of the show. She's an essential part of the show. "

WITCHBLADE: WITCHBLADE star Yancy Butler was indeed back on the set of the series on Monday. While on hand at the 28th annual Saturn Awards to accept series star Yancy Butler’s best television actress award, WITCHBLADE’s Anthony Cistaro talked about her return to the show. “Yancy Butler is on the set. She’s shooting as we speak,” Cistaro said. “When I was working with her, she was totally professional. I’m looking forward to going back to work with her on Friday.” Witchblade launches its second season on June 16 with a two-hour premiere, before moving to its regular Monday-night timeslot.

MINORITY REPORT: There is an AWESOME trailer now available at http://www.minorityreport.com/. If you like special effects -- this movie is for you!

LOVE STORIES: Do you have a romantic movie? How do you think it stands up against the best of the best? You can see if your movie even made the list at http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hollywoodreporter/film/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1513435. The American Film Institute's top choice is CASABLANCA, followed by GONE WITH THE WIND. The love-story list was chosen by about 1,800 directors, actors, studio executives, critics and others in Hollywood, who voted from a field of 400 nominated films.

Tuesday, June 11:
BABYLON 5 DVDs: Great news on upcoming DVDs for Babylon 5. See the news from JMS below.

WITCHBLADE: SCIFI has an interview with Yancy Butler, star of Witchblade over at http://www.scifi.com/sfw/advance/10_interview.html. Yancy talks about the upcoming second season and changes ahead for Sarah Pezzini. It looks like the interview was conducted before production stopped as Butler went into alcohol rehab. Production was to restart as Butler was scheduled to return to work yesterday.

LOONEY TUNES! Gremlins' Joe Dante told SCI FI Wire that he is directing the next as-yet-untitled Looney Tunes live- action/animated movie. Dante said, "We're trying to reintroduce them to a multigenerational audience. The idea is to bring the characters back to the archetypes of the late '40s and early '50s, when they were really funny and acerbic and relevant." According to the Hollywood Reporter, Brendan Fraser will star in the film alongside Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and other Termite Terrace contract players in Warner Bros. Pictures' live-action/animated feature "Looney Tunes: Back in Action." The studio has committed to producing a series of Looney Tunes shorts that will run in theaters in tandem with high-profile Warners releases. The Warner Bros. Animation unit is also producing a new "Baby Looney Tunes" series to premiere this fall on Cartoon Network.

BUFFY TOON: Although there had been indications that Sarah Michelle Gellar would lend her voice to the new Buffy animated series, Gellar told SCI FI Wire, "I'm not part of that. It says that I am [on the Internet], but the first I heard of it was last week." No information on who will provide the slayer's voice as this animated project moves forward.

NEIL GAIMAN: The 2001 Bram Stoker Awards were given out June 8 in New York by the Horror Writers Association. Neil Gaiman's American Gods won the prize for best novel. The awards, named for the author of Dracula, honor outstanding work in the horror field. The Slush Factory talks to Neil about writing "American Gods".

X-MEN 2: Kelly Hu will portray Lady Deathstrike in the upcoming X-Men sequel. There are some great photos of Kelly over at http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/0206/11/index.htm.

SPIDERMAN 2: According to Variety, David Koepp, who wrote the Spider-Man movie, is busy working up a script for the sequel. Smallville executive producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar originally slated to pen the script, will now work on the script after Koepp drafts his idea. "David had an idea and agreed to take some time off from the other project to write the first draft," Sony's Amy Pascal told Variety. Spider-Man 2 is set for a May 4, 2004 release.

Monday, June 10:
SATURN AWARDS: The Saturn Awards will be given out tonight. It will be interesting to see the winners in some of the categories. Cinescape is covering the event; we'll have the winners when the information is available.

LORD OF THE RINGS: Elijah Woods confirmed rumors last week during the MTV Movie awards that there are re-shoots for LORD OF THE RINGS sequels slated soon back in New Zealand. Said Woods, “They've realized that there are certain things that they are missing.” Missing scenes are for both LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (due in December) and THE RETURN OF THE KING (due December 2003).

RATINGS: Top 10 SciFi Channel Shows: Lake Placid 1.1; Shark Attack 2 0.9; Rattled 0.9; The Stand, Pt. 1 0.9; Crocodile 0.9; Nightscream 0.8; Shark Attack 2 0.8; The Stand, Pt. 2 0.8; Stranded 0.8, and Dying to Live 0.7. Source: Nielsen Galaxy Report, 5/13/02 - 5/19/02.

WEEKEND BOXOFFICE: THE SUM OF ALL FEARS hung onto #1 over the weekend, bringing in another $18.7 million in receipts. Warner Bros. Pictures' "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood" made a strong showing in the second spot with an estimated $16.4 million. 20th Century Fox's "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones" moved into the third position with an estimated take of $13.9 million; the film has grossed an estimated $255 million. Buena Vista's "Bad Company" finished in the fourth slot with an estimated $10.5 million. Sony's "Spider-Man" continued to scale boxoffice heights in the fifth spot with an estimated $10 million, down a slim 30% from the previous week -- which is especially impressive considering the film lost 411 theaters. The movie's total to date is a staggering $370.1 million.

NEW CONVENTION LISTED: Ranger Mark sent along information for the Trek Expo 2002 in Tulsa, OK June 21-23. Rick Biggs will be there. For more information, go to http://www.starbase21ok.com.

Sunday, June 9:
FARSCAPE: Friday night was a night of premieres at SCIFI. FARSCAPE began season four and with a two-year renewal, doesn't have the same fears they had when they ended season three! For a rundown of the season opener and a great cast photo, go to www.cinescape.com.

BABYLON 5 DVDs

Here's a note from JMS on the upcoming DVDs for Babylon 5:

I was holding off saying anything until WB or someone else could announce it, but since it's come up here (newsgroup) via the captioning institute...yeah, as noted, it's real.

Season One will be out in a boxed set this Fall, and they're going to be including at minimum two commentaries from me, probably on Signs and Portents and Chrysalis (it's a matter of how much time and energy I can give to it given that there's no fees involved and I'm in the midst of Jeremiah), and if possible, Babylon Squared, maybe Sky Full of Stars. They'd also like to film an on-camera intro by me (but I guess folks will buy it anyway, even with that particular horror included).

They're pulling together a lot of stuff on this release so that there are plenty of extras this time around, now that the value of the DVDs has been shown by the first release..

Reports are now out that the first boxed set will be available in the UK on October 14.

MEMORY LANE

Last night, I was looking through some old photos taken at conventions and during my B5 studio visits. It was great seeing some old friends again and I thought this might be a terrific summer project for everyone to participate in. How about sending in your favorite photo that we can post for everyone to share. If there's a story behind the photo, send that along as well. If you don't have the photo in electronic format to attach to your story, send that to me and I'll scan it for you -- and return your photo for safe keeping. If you have any questions, drop me a line at sgbruckner@aol.com. I'll start pulling together some of my own favorites and hope that others will follow soon. A new page should be up soon.

KEEPING UP WITH CAST AND CREW

MELISSA GILBERT: Melissa has been the SAG president since March and she has had a plate full of issues to deal with. To get an appreciation of what's going on with Melissa and SAG, go to http://www.entertainmentstudios.com/entertain_news/a/20020610/3d048ac4.1a1.178.1/index_is.asp.

MELISSA GILBERT: Melissa hosts "Adoption: Real Families, Real Stories", a Hallmark Channel's first-ever original series. This one-hour, non-scripted reality show, airs Sundays at 8 p.m. (ET), follows two different families per episode as they go through the often challenging, frustrating ut ultimately rewarding adoption process. Melissa says, "I was adopted at birth and made to feel very special because of it. Today, I am the mother and step-mother of four, and I know that there are many ways to make a family."

JEFFREY WILLERTH: When last we heard from the Kosh man, he was busy at work in Detroit on a special chronicling the early days of Henry Ford. Well the project has ended and is now a special PBS show. The documentary is available from NETA, so call your local PBS station and ask them when it will air.

JASON CARTER/RICHARD BIGGS: The Biggs & Carter EXPERIENCES is coming to Origins this year. The conveniton is scheduled to occur over the 4th of July weekend. If you've seen these two guys together, you know having them in the same room is a BLAST. If you're in the neighborhood, you'll not want to miss this! See the convention calendar for details.

UNIQUE CHARITY ITEM

Cast Picture Ten popular science fiction actors have donated their time, images and autographs for an exclusive photograph, the proceeds of which will go to charity. For sale through the actors themselves and at , the limited-edition photo is in color, edged in white and ready to place in an 11X14 frame, and handsigned. Each of the 1,000 limited edition photos comes embossed with a seal of authenticity and numbered. The photograph is now available for a pre-sale price of $100. After Sept 11, 2002, the price will go up to at least $125.00. Among the charities to benefit will be the Penny Lane home for abused children in Los Angeles, and various September 11 funds. The actors hope to raise more than $100,000 through the charity project. The Penny Lane Home is a residential facility for children who have been severely abused, physically, emotionally and sexually. Many have "fallen through the cracks" of the social service outreach programs, and Penny Lane is their last chance at escaping the abuse.

Actors in the photo include: Patricia Tallman, known best for her roles as Lyta Alexander in Babylon 5 and Barbara in Night of the Living Dead (1990) Vaughn Armstrong, who has portrayed more guest star aliens on Star Trek:TNG, DS9 and Voyager than any other actor in Star Trek history. Currently, he holds the recurring role of Admiral Maxwell Forrest on Enterprise, as well as at least eight other Guest Starring roles on board the new Trek series to date. Stephen Austin portrayed many bizarre alien creatures on Babylon 5. His most notable was the lovable Pak'ma'ra Ambassador. David Brooks is an accomplished artist as well as actor. He is best known to the sci fi community as Max Eilerson on the Babylon 5 spin off, Crusade. Jeffrey Willerth portrayed Ambassador Kosh and was Associate Producer of Babylon 5 Robin Atkin Downes, best known for his role of Byron in Babylon 5 Carrie Dobro, Dureena Nafeel in Crusade. Tim Choate was extremely popular on B5 as Zathras (and his brothers, all named Zathras). He also portrayed Pollack on Crusade. Beata Pozniak appeared as Babylon 5's Earth Alliance President Luchenko. Ed Wasser, the evil Mr. Morden on Babylon 5.

As a special promotion, the first 100 orders will receive a special gift: former Star Trek stunt coordinator, Dennis Madalone, has donated 100 copies of his single, "America, We Stand As One," to say thank you to the science fiction fans who purchase the charity photograph. To order the photo online, go to http://www.thegalacticgateway.com, click on shop, and search on the word charity.

BABYLON 5 BOOK OF QUOTES

Here's a note from JMS regarding an upcoming project:

It had to happen sooner or later...with so many message boards and posts asking "What's your favorite B5 quote?" a book of Babylon 5 quotes was inevitable.

So "But In Purple I'm Stunning: Quotations from Babylon 5" is coming out from an independent publisher later this year. The book will also contain sections dedicated to fan choices for best/favorite quote. Fans of Babylon 5 are invited to send in their favorite quote, and why it's a favorite. The best of these emails will be culled for the book, and along the way this will determine the #1 favorite quote.

In particular, the book will be looking for anecdotes/stories from fans about what a given quote, or what the show, meant to them in particular. There are a lot of people who have found comfort or meaning in the show, or found it helped them get through some of life's problems. (An example I sometimes cite at conventions was the young man dying of aids who asked his sister to put all of G'Kar's speeches about hope and never giving up on tape so he could listen to them at his bedside.)

It needn't be a heavy story, just one that has meaning for the person involved, can be a funny story, whatever. Basically the goal is to find the intersection where the show and its message and its words touched people.

All contributions will be considered free to use by virtue of being submitted for this project.

So if you have such an anecdote/story/message about a favorite quote or the show in general, send it to the following address (rather than replying to this, since I'll just have to forward it on in any event):

b5quotes@yahoo.ca

BABYLON 5 REFERENCE PAGES

The Official Babylon 5 Magazine is indexed here as well. With the closure of the magazine in May, you'll want to see which magazines you have -- and which ones you will want to collect. The index may help you make a decision on which ones to choose. The Fan Club has many of the issues at thestation.com , making it very easy to complete your collection.

Universe Today -- the Babylon 5 Fan Club quarterly can also be found here. The index gives you a rundown of what articles were presented, what interviews published.

If you have magazines that have featured Babylon 5 or Crusade that are not listed, send along their issue number and a note to indicate what the article was about. It would be nice to have a fairly comprehensive listing of Babylon 5 publications here.

I have added a listing of all the Babylon 5 novels and now the B5 comic books to the reference page. If there are other items that you feel should be included, let me know.

NW-B5 is a mailing list devoted to bringing critical information to the Vancouver Island, Lower Mainland, and Northern Washington areas. More specifically, anyone north of Seattle. B5 is broadcast on SPACE:TIS in Canada, and Sci-Fi channel in the US. By subscribing to nw-b5, you'll be able to know info bringing you up to date on the current scheduling and events happening in the community related to B5. You'll also be subscribed to the list itself, which means that you'll receive email when there is a scheduling change or critical information needs to go out to you (for example, if we need to start another mailing campaign).

For further information, see http://www.nw-b5.com

Reports of "The Gathering" are beginning to turn up on the list. John posted a mini-report, with photos, over at http://www.geocities.com/jnf.geo/nw-b5/gathered.htm#0501. You may want to check it out. It was a terrific event in which JMS showed clips from "Legend of the Rangers". Most of the cast was in attendance -- a great group of individuals.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS

The Art Gallery at The Zocalo Today is open. There are SO MANY talented people in our Babylon 5 community. We have enjoyed works by Todd Brugman and Tye Bourdony on our toons page, but there are a host of others who enjoy drawing, painting, sketching their favorite characters. Here are a few works that have been received. I have some others that will be added soon.

If you would like to share your work with us at The Zocalo Today, please send along a digital photo of your work and I'll begin putting the gallery together. If you do not have your work in digital format, drop me a note and we'll see what we can work out.

CALLING ALL CLUBS

There are a number of fabulous Babylon 5/Crusade Clubs around the world. I'd like to begin listing them here on The Zocalo Today. Eric dropped me a note the other day providing information about a Club in France. I know there are other clubs in Brazil, Germany, Russia -- and who knows how many here in the US. Let's get a listing together. Perhaps we can share resources, even get together as we travel around. Drop the information about your Club to me at sgbruckner@aol.com or bruckner@isnnews.net. That information will be added to the new B5 Fan Club Listing.

BABYLON 5 FAN CLUB

Netter Digital filed for bankruptcy in July of 2000 and all their worldly posessions were auctioned off on December 7. The B5 Fan Club site, Thestation.com and it's store, the Emporium, has been closed.

BABYLON 5 NEWSLETTERS

If you have a newsletter you'd like to have listed at The Zocalo Today, send the information along. It will be posted on the B5 Fan Club/Newsletter page.

Ranger Shane in North Carolina sent in the following note about their "Jumpgate" newsletter.

Hey Sandy! Just wanted to give you an update on the NC B5 group's newsletter, Jumpgate. There's now a dedicated EMail address for submissions - jumpgatemag@bellsouth.net - and any submissions, solicited or un-, can be sent to this address. MAIL FOR CAST AND CREW

Here's a recent note from JMS on the subject:

Just an FYI to those who've been using the Ventura Blvd. mail drop for fan mail to actors....

As mentioned before, we're phasing out the forwarding of fan mail because we a) don't have the resources, complicated by b) the actors have scattered to the four winds, and it makes it very difficult to get everything to everybody in a timely fashion.

So, having provided prior notice...fan mail to actors coming to the Ventura Blvd. mail drop will be sent back. Mail to actors should be sent via their official fan clubs. I will still be taking mail there, since it's my mailbox, but that's it.

Just so's y'all know and save a few bucks on postage and returns.

JMS' mail can be sent to:

14431 Ventura Boulevard, PMB 260
Sherman Oaks, CA 91423
