LATEST NEWS FOR SEPTEMBER:

GOTHAM
Though we’re still worried this show will devolve into a comic bad guy easter egg hunt at some point, this new footage from the rest of Gotham's season one is surprisingly strong. It dives deeper into the politics of Gotham City, the city’s underbelly and how the murder of the Waynes has thrust the balance into chaos.
Oh, it also includes a few teases of classic Batman villains. We can definitely confirm serial killer Victor Zsasz is there — and has a bone to pick with young Detective Jim Gordon — but there were also a few tantalizing peeks at what could be Scarecrow and Professor Pyg. As was the case with the pilot, the aesthetic continues to look absolutely stunning. Seriously, this show is hard-boiled gorgeous.
If they can carry over the excitement of the pilot and work in some of these new arcs, we have hope this series might actually be able to work over the long haul. But it’s still stuck in that awkward purgatory of featuring a cop trying to clean up a city that we know can’t be cleaned up — or else there’d be no reason for Batman to exist in the future. But we digress.
LEGEND OF KORRA
Nickelodeon might be as confused as ever about what to do with it, but that hasn’t stopped the creators of Legend of Korra from cranking out one of the most compelling anime series on television. Now we have our first look at the final season.
The network has debuted the first trailer for Legend of Korra: Book 4, just a few days before the new season debuts online at Nick.com. This will mark the series’ final season, and picks up the action three years after the conclusion of Book 3. Not surprisingly, a whole lot has changed in the meantime.
Despite the fact that Nick has kicked the show off the schedule due to atrocious ratings and relegated it to an online exclusive, Korra shows no signs of slowing down creatively as it heads into its final arc. One big twist we can expect? The return of a major, fan-favorite character from Avatar: The Last Airbender, teased in the trailer. Oooh.
The teaser sets out to teasingly ask if Korra can maintain balance in a world that is rapidly changing.
THE FLASH
With The Flash’s debut less than two weeks away, the network has released an extended synopsis for the pilot episode — revealing one possibly massive detail about the direction the series might be taking later in the season.
The full synopsis sets up the supporting cast and circumstances of how Barry gains his powers, but it’s the final paragraph that drops a bombshell that should be very familiar for comic fans. We’d been wondering just how deep the small-screen Flash would dig into Barry Allen’s comic-book bag of tricks, and it seems time travel will definitely be a part of this series -- quite possibly a very big part.
Check out the full synopsis below, with key quotes bolded for emphasis:
From the Arrow creative team of executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg and director David Nutter, THE FLASH is a fast-paced super hero drama that follows the high-speed adventures of the Fastest Man Alive. Written by Berlanti, Kreisberg and DC Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns, the action drama follows Central City Police scientist Barry Allen, an everyday guy with the heart of a hero and the genuine desire to help others. Standing still emotionally since the day his mother was murdered (and his father unjustly jailed for the crime), Barry was taken in as a child by the investigating Detective West and raised in a cop's home alongside West's supersmart daughter (and Barry's dream girl) Iris. But when an unexpected and devastating accident at the S.T.A.R. Labs Particle Accelerator facility strikes Barry, he finds himself suddenly charged with the incredible power to move at super speeds.
While Barry has always been a hero in his soul, his newfound powers have finally given him the ability to act like one. With the help of the research team at S.T.A.R. Labs -- including billionaire visionary Harrison Wells, biogenetics expert Caitlin Snow and the eternally upbeat Cisco Ramon -- Barry begins testing the limits of his evolving powers and using them to stop crime, ensuring that no one suffers a similar tragedy to his own family history.
Working with his adopted father Detective West; West's conceited partner Detective Eddie Thawne and Iris West, who's earning her degree in Criminal Psychology, Barry uses his superhuman abilities to help the people of Central City and stop the rogues' gallery of villains -- many of whom have also been altered by the particle accelerator explosion. Concealing his identity behind his incredible velocity, Barry can not only accomplish feats faster than human comprehension, but also taps into an energy that allows him to access moments out of time -- both past and future. With a winning personality and a smile on his face, Barry Allen -- aka The Flash -- is finally moving forward in life ... very, very fast!
That’s right: The TV version of the Flash will definitely be able to tap into those super-fast time-travel abilities, and after seeing the pilot ourselves a while back, we’re very curious to see how those powers will be incorporated. Much as Arrow has done before it, the Flash series seems to be lining up as a worthy adaptation of the comic stories we all know and love — and they’re definitely not shying away from the more science-fiction parts of the story.
INTERSTELLAR
After a very long wait, Christopher Nolan's Interstellar is finally taking shape before our eyes.
Interstellar is one of those films that movie nerds got impossibly excited for even before we really knew anything about it. "Christopher Nolan doing hard sci-fi" was, for a long time, the only thing we had to go on, but that was enough. Then footage from the film finally started to appear, and somehow our excitement grew, because everything we've seen so far looks like it proves we were right to call this movie one of the most anticipated of 2014.
Now we're a little more than a month away from finally seeing Interstellar in all its glory on the big screen, and a new minute-long TV trailer has just been released to add to our anticipation with new footage and a few more details about the plot. We already knew the film is about a crew of people, led by Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), who embark on a mission to save humanity by traveling through a wormhole and looking for habitable planets beyond our own solar system, while the Earth itself grows less and less able to support its population. Now we also know that there's an even stronger ticking-clock element to the plot than we knew (which we'll let the trailer explain for you). Cooper is caught between seeing his family again and saving the entire human race, and he might not be able to do either.
The trailer also gives us a few new glimpses of footage with a particular focus on the mission and its participants, which apparently include a somewhat minimalist robot.
CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON: THE GREEN LEGEND
In a dramatic rebuke of the traditional theatrical release, Netflix and The Weinstein Co. have signed a deal to release the sequel to Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon simultaneously on Netflix and in select Imax theaters around the world.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend will make its debut Aug. 28, 2015.
“The moviegoing experience is evolving quickly and profoundly, and Netflix is unquestionably at the forefront of that movement,” said TWC co-chairman Harvey Weinstein in a statement. “We are tremendously excited to be continuing our great relationship with Netflix and bringing to fans all over the world the latest chapter in this amazing and intriguing story.”
Netflix said Crouching Tiger 2 will be the first of several major films to be given a day-and-date release on Netflix and in some Imax theaters.
The company's chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, has long wanted to release movies day-and-date on Netflix and in theaters, something most exhibitors are unlikely to ever allow, meaning Crouching Tiger 2 may not play in Imax locations controlled by some of the major chains in the U.S. Indeed, Imax is making a bold move by partnering with Netflix.
“Fans will have unprecedented choice in how they enjoy an amazing and memorable film that combines intense action and incredible beauty,” Sarandos said in announcing the deal. “We are honored to be working with Harvey Weinstein and a world-class team of creators to bring this epic story to people all over the world and to partner with Imax, a brand that represents the highest quality of immersive entertainment, in the distribution of this film.”
Produced by TWC, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2 is directed by Yuen Wo-Ping, also a martial arts master. Michelle Yeoh reprises her role as Yu Shu-Lien, and Donnie Yen returns as Silent Wolf.
“Imax has a terrific opportunity, via this partnership with Netflix, to release Crouching Tiger — a high-quality, action-packed film that is right in our wheelhouse — at the end of the summer blockbuster season,” said Greg Foster, senior vp of Imax Corp. and CEO of Imax Entertainment. He added that he is particularly hopeful it will play in China, where Netflix isn't available.
"In territories where we simultaneously release with Netflix, we are excited to offer consumers the option of deciding how, when and where they want to view the film, and exhibitors the opportunity to participate in this alternative form of content in a new and innovative way," Foster continued.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was released in 2000 and went on to be nominated for best picture and win the best foreign language Oscar at the Academy Awards. It earned more than $213 million worldwide, including $128 million in the U.S.

WIZARD WARS
Presto! Syfy has conjured up more Wizard Wars.
The NBCUniversal-owned cable network has doubled up on the reality competition series featuring judges Penn & Teller, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Following a successful first run of six episodes, the cabler has picked up a half-dozen more, with the series set to return in January.
See more Faces of Fall 2014
The series, which hails from A. Smith & Co. (Hell's Kitchen, American Ninja Warrior), centers on young magicians trying to impress judges Penn Jillette and Teller with original magic using only a random assortment of everyday objects.
Since its Aug. 19 debut, Wizard Wars has been a solid performer. Factoring in seven days of delayed viewing, the premiere collected 1.3 million total viewers and has grown week-to-week. Its first season ranks as Syfy's No. 1 unscripted series of the year among men.
Wizard Wars is one of a handful of magic-themed series currently on TV. It joins The CW's Masters of Illusion and Penn & Teller: Fool Us, as well as a pair on National Geographic.
Wizard Wars is exec produced by Arthur Smith, Kent Weed, Frank Sinton, Tim Eagan, Jillette and Teller.
LONDON HAS FALLEN
Easy Money II: Hard to Kill helmer Babak Najafi has, according to The Hollywood Reporter, signed on direct London Has Fallen, the upcoming sequel to last year's Olympus Has Fallen. Najafi replaces the formerly-attached Fredrik Bond (Charlie Countryman), who departed the project earlier this month due to "creative differences."
Star Gerard Butler is returning for the sequel, which is written by Creighton Rothenberger & Katrin Benedikt and Christian Gudegast. The story picks up in London, where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances. His funeral is a must-attend event for leaders of the Western world. But what starts out as the most protected event on earth, turns into a deadly plot to kill the world's most powerful leaders and unleash a terrifying vision of the future. Only three people have any hope of stopping it: the President of the United States, his formidable secret service head (Butler), and an English MI-6 agent who rightly trusts no one.
London Has Fallen is also set to star Aaron Eckhart, Angela Bassett, Morgan Freeman and Melissa Leo.
The Focus Features release is being produced by Butler, Alan Siegel, Mark Gill, and Matt O'Toole. Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, John Thompson, Christine Crow, and Focus Features CEO Peter Schlessel will executive produce.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
he ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend.
The last weekend of September was a good one for Denzel Washington as he reunited with Training Day director Antoine Fuqua for a new take on the '80s show The Equalizer (Sony), co-starring Chloe Moretz and Marton Csokas, which opened with a solid $35 million in 3,236 theaters. It averaged over $10,000 per location and is the third biggest opening in Washington's career following 2007's American Gangster and 2012's Safe House, just ahead of the $32.8 million opening of 2010's The Book of Eli. Out of that opening weekend take, over $3.3 million was grossed in 352 IMAX screens across the country. Sony has already greenlit the sequel to The Equalizer, which would presumably have Washington reprise the role, but first, he and Antoine Fuqua will do a remake of The Magnificent Seven, a Western, scheduled to start shooting next year.
The Equalizer opened in 65 other territories overseas where it brought in $17.8 million with 137 IMAX screenings accounting for more than $1.4 million. It was #1 in the United Kingdom with $2.9 million on 650 screens, while Russia was close behind with $2.7 million on 800 screens and Mexico took in $14 million on 687 screens. Australia (which is handled by Village Roadshow) scored $1.9 million.
In its second weekend, the adaptation of James Dashner's The Maze Runner (20th Century Fox), starring Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Will Poulter, moved down to second place with $17.5 million, a relatively minimal 46% drop, which is impressive compared to the second weekend of other young adult adaptations. (Earlier this year, Divergent dropped 53% in its second weekend while Fox's The Fault in Our Stars dropped nearly 69% in its second weekend, both after bigger opening weekends.) The Maze Runner has grossed $58.2 million domestically in its first ten days with a sequel scheduled for next September.
Internationally, the action movie added another $27.5 million in its second weekend, opening at #1 in four territories including Holland and remaining at #1 in ten others, bringing its international total to $91 million and its global total to $150 million.
The hit sci-fi flick also managed to stay just ahead of the weekend's other new movie in wide release, LAIKA Studio's stop-motion animated The Boxtrolls (Focus Features), featuring the voices of Ben Kingsley, Isaac Hempstead Wright and more. It opened with an estimate of $17.3 million in 3,464 theaters (about $5,000 per location) while also taking in $17.7 million overseas in ??? territories for a first weekend total of $34.9 million.
Shawn Levy's ensemble dramedy This is Where I Leave You (Warner Bros.) also held up well from its opening weekend, dropping 39% to fourth place with $7 million and $22.6 million total.
The thriller No Good Deed (Sony/Screen Gems), starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, finally fell behind the family sequel Dolphin Tale 2 (Warner Bros.) with $4.6 million to the latter's $4.8 million. No Good Deed is still ahead with $46.6 million gross to "Dolphin Tale's" $33.7 million.
The Liam Neeson crime-thriller A Walk Among the Tombstones (Universal) took a nasty plunge in its second weekend, dropping five places to #7 with $4.2 million and $20.9 million. That's a 67% drop from its opening weekend, proving that not even the proven box office star like Liam Neeson can stand up to Denzel.
Celebrating its 9th weekend in the Top 10, Marvel and Walt Disney Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy took eighth place with $3.8 million, a minor drop of 28%, as it brought its North American total to $319.2 million, making it the third biggest Marvel Studios movie domestically.Internationally, the movie added another $4 million for an overseas total of $325 million, making it one of the few movies of the year to do equally well both domestically and overseas with a global take of $644.2 million.
The Top 10 was rounded out by Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the Damon Wayans Jr.-Jake Johnson comedy Let's Be Cops (20th Century Fox) with roughly $1.5 million each.
The estimated gross of the Top 10 came to $97.2 million, which was up slightly from last year when Sony's Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 won the weekend with $34 million while Ron Howard's F1 drama Rush, starring Chris Hemsworth, led the other two new movies, Baggage Claim and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Don Jon, with $10 million.
As far as limited releases, the Mexican horror remake Mas Nego Que La Noche (Lionsgate/Pantelion) grossed an estimated $550 thousand in 178 theaters, while the British comedy Pride (CBS Films), starring Andrew Scott, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West and Paddy Considine, opened in six theaters in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, where it scored $85,000, averaging $14,000 per location.

JACK KIRBY AND MARVEL
After years and years of trials, appeals, and rumors over what would or would not happen, Jack Kirby's heirs have, at long last, settled out of court with Marvel.
In case you didn't know, artist and comic legend Jack Kirby is responsible for the creation of many of Marvel's heaviest-hitting characters. The problem is that what Kirby did at the time seems to fall under the auspices of contract work -- meaning, essentially, it doesn't matter what his brain came up with while under contract, because Marvel owns it.
But, with Kirby sadly deceased, his estate and heirs have continued to fight so that Marvel will finally pay up what they feel is due for all those characters ol' King Kirby was responsible for creating.
And while the court process was mostly one hundred miles of bad road, the Kirby estate plugged along. With a potential SCOTUS hearing on the horizon over the possibility that the Kirby estate could legally issue termination notices on 262 of Jack's works, it seems that Marvel has finally given in, at least a little.
In a joint statement, Marvel and the Kirby heirs had this to say:
Marvel and the family of Jack Kirby have amicably resolved their legal disputes, and are looking forward to advancing their shared goal of honoring Mr. Kirby’s significant role in Marvel’s history.
While the specifics of the settlement will likely remain undisclosed, best guess says Marvel and Disney paid the Kirbys a significant sum. Considering there was even a tiny possibility that Marvel could have had to retroactively cough up the dough for most of their hugely successful movies, it makes sense that they finally made a deal. Plus, we imagine the Kirbys are probably exhausted of fighting this lengthy legal battle.
The result? Jack Kirby actually kind of got his due, albeit posthumously. Which isn't an insignificant victory, considering all the other comics creators out there who are hoping they'll finally get paid for adaptations of their work.
X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST
Last summer's X-Men: Days of Future Past was a critical and commercial hit, successfully tackling one of the comics' biggest stories while combining the franchise's biggest stars. But if you look closely, there's a glaring omission: Rogue. The character and her portrayer, Anna Paquin, were M.I.A. from the movie with the exception of a small cameo.
Despite Paquin's lack of screen time, her name appeared seventh in the film's closing credits. She was listed before Peter Dinklage, Ellen Page and Shawn Ashmore. This left us scratching our heads. We're sure it had to do with a contractual obligation and the amount of footage she actually shot. Earlier this year, we learned that most of Paquin's scenes had been left on the cutting-room floor.
Apparently Rogue's storyline had to be omitted for time and clarity. According to screenwriter Simon Kinberg, Fox will re-release an extended version of Days of Future Past on home video next summer. It's being called the "Rogue Cut" and will feature an additonal 10-plus minutes of footage. Not only will her storyline be reinstated, but we'll get more from other characters, too.
After making the announcement Thursday, Kinberg explained, “We want to give [fans] the fullest picture of the film — behind the camera, and in front of it” He also described Rogue's story as “a big chunk, a substantial part of the movie.” He continued, “Every movie has scenes that are cut out, but not every movie has scenes cut out with such a beloved character.”
Days of Future Past did a great job of correcting a lot of the original trilogy's mistakes. Jean Grey and Cyclops were given a second chance, and we hope the same happens for Rogue. Fingers crossed.
GENIUS
Two comic book villains will get to show their literary side when Guy Pearce (a.k.a. Aldrich Killian in Iron Man 3) and Dominic West (a.k.a. Jigsaw in Punisher: War Zone) join the cast of renowned theater director Michael Grandage’s Genius.
Pearce will take on the role of troubled "The Great Gatsby" writer F. Scott Fitzgerald while Dominic West will play macho "The Sun Also Rises" scribe Ernest Hemingway, both ex-patriots and pals who were edited at publishing giant Charles Scribner's Sons by Max Perkins, to be played by Oscar-winner Colin Firth. Grandage's cinematic debut also stars Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Laura Linney.
Based on the National Book Award winning biography "Max Perkins: Editor of Genius," by A. Scott Berg (adapted by John Logan), Genius centers on the real-life relationship between literary giant Thomas Wolfe (Law) and renowned editor Max Perkins (Firth). Finding fame and critical success at a young age, Wolfe is a blazing talent with a larger-than-life personality to match. Perkins is one of the most respected and well-known literary editors of all time, discovering such iconic novelists as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. Wolfe and Perkins develop a tender, complex friendship. Transformative and irrepressible, this friendship will change the lives of these brilliant, but very different men forever.
Pearce recently starred in The Rover, while West--best known for his starring role on HBO's "The Wire"--will be seen on Showtime's new fall series "The Affair," and will provide a voice in Pixar's sequel Finding Dory. Tim Bevan (Les Miserables, Atonement) will executive produce Genius alongside producers James Bierman, Grandage and Logan.
The friendship between Fitzgerald and Hemingway was most recently portrayed onscreen in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, where they were played by Tom Hiddleston and Corey Stoll, respectively.
THE MAZE RUNNER: SCORCH TRIALS
"Game of Thrones" star Aidan Gillen has joined the cast of 20th Century Fox's The Scorch Trials, the upcoming sequel to the now-in-theaters hit The Maze Runner (If you haven't seen it yet, stop reading now as the following does contain some spoilers). The Hollywood Reporter has the news, reporting that Gillen will play the story's villain, Janson, also known as Rat-Man. They have also confirmed that Wes Ball, the director of the first film, will be returning for the sequel.
Also starring Dylan O'Brien, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter and Patricia Clarkson, The Scorch Trials adapts James Dashner's second book in the series, following Thomas and the other Gladers as they have escaped the maze and are put into a dormitory where they face new threats.
The Scorch Trials is slated to begin filming next month and will hit theaters on September 18, 2015.

COLONY
Sawyer's back, y'all -- and just in time for the 10th anniversary of "Lost."
Josh Holloway is set to team up with former "Lost" producer Carlton Cuse for USA's upcoming naturalistic drama pilot "Colony."
Set in Los Angeles in the near future -- 2015, to be exact -- "Colony" follows characters who are struggling to figure out how to survive in a city that is in a state of occupation.
Holloway has been tapped to play the main character, Will Bowman, a former FBI agent who -- in an effort to protect his family -- is forced to work with the occupational government to take down the growing resistance movement.
"Colony," which is written and executive produced by Cuse and Ryan Condal ("Hercules"), marks the first time Holloway and Cuse have worked together since "Lost" ended in 2010. It also marks Holloway's return to TV since his run on "Intelligence."
STAR WARS: CLONE WARS
They might’ve pulled the plug on Star Wars: Clone Wars to make way for the new animated series Star Wars: Rebels, but the folks at Lucasfilm are trying to do what they can to make the pill a bit easier to swallow.
Along with cutting a deal at Netflix to post the unreleased episodes The Lost Missions a while back, StarWars.com has now dropped animated storyboards for four more Clone Wars episodes that had been in development but were ultimately not completed. Sure, it ain’t bringing the series back, but it at least gives fans a chance to see what the writers were putting together.
The four storyboard episodes follow a long-haired Anakin and Obi-Wan as they investigate the mysterious death of a Jedi Master on Utapau. When making the Clone Wars announcement, Lucasfilm Story Group's Pablo Hidalgo noted the online release allows the built-in audience to find and enjoy the content, because the fans will obviously “overlook the unfinished-ness of it if it means this is an opportunity to understand what that story was.”
We tend to agree, and we really wish more studios would make this kind of effort when canceling a show. Fans are always wanting to know what would come next, especially if something ends with more than a few threads still in the air. We’re still bummed about the cancellation, but kudos to StarWars.com for putting this package together. The embeds tend to be breaking, but you can watch all the storyboard episodes right here.
Along with the storyboard clips, they’ve also created the stellar retrospective Star Wars: Clone Wars Legacy, looking back at the history of the series and recapping all the key moments and awesome scenes.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #34
Supes and Lex are still on villain clean-up duty over in the pages of the Justice League, but their methods could push them to extremes that endanger their closest allies. Meanwhile, new recruit Jessica Cruz/Power Ring has become a dark prophet and is going to force the League to face their own fears -- which might prepare them for a nasty new threat. Available from DC Comics on October 1, the "Injustice League" story arc wraps up with issue #34. And we have an exclusive peek at the issue, titled "Unlikely Allies." The story is written by Geoff Johns with art by Scott Kolins and Andrew Dalhousewhich. Take a look before you get the book.
THE EDEN PROJECT
Just as the week is coming to a close, Sony Pictures has given the sleepy spec market a jolt with an acquisition.
The studio has picked up The Eden Project, a sci-fi spec from Black List writer Christina Hodson. Tobey Maguire will produce via his Material production banner as well as Maguire's Material mate Matthew Plouffe.
Sony is keeping the plot details for Eden guarded by a serpent, but it is a sci-fi action film centered around two female characters. The script also is intended to be the first of a conceived trilogy.
Sources say the deal for the spec was in the $750,000 range.
Columbia Pictures president Hannah Minghella orchestrated the deal for the studio in a competitive situation and will oversee the project.

Eden reteams the studio with the production company with which it is in preproduction on YA adaptation The 5th Wave. The movie is due to start shooting in October and will star Chloe Moretz and Liev Schreiber.
It is also the second major deal for Material in recent weeks, as it follows the sale of chess drama Pawn Sacrifice to new-fangled distributor Bleecker Street. The movie, which stars Maguire and is directed by Ed Zwick, was coming off a high-profile premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
Hodson is known for two scripts that landed on The Black List two years in a row. Shut In, a psychological thriller, was on the list in 2012 and picked up by David Linde's Lava Bear. The following year, her creepy script Seed landed on the list and is now being produced by Temple Hill and Peter Safran.
The former development exec also has the erotic thriller Unforgettable set up at Warner Bros., with Denise DiNovi producing and Amma Asante (Belle) attached to direct.
Hodson is repped by CAA; Tobin Babst at Kaplan/Perrone; and Ziffren, Brittenham. Material is repped by WME's Warren Zavala and Sarah Self as well as Gretchen Rush of Hansen, Jacobson.

SYFY RENEWS DEFIANCE AND DOMINION
Syfy might have quite a few new series in development, but that doesn’t mean they’re giving up on the current crop of sc-fi dramas. The network has officially picked up Defiance and Dominion for new seasons in 2015.
The post-invasion drama Defiance will return for a third season, while the apocalyptic angel war series Dominion will be back for a sophomore effort following its debut run over the summer. Both shows ended with more than a few story arcs still dangling, so this news likely comes as a relief for fans.
After hitting its stride late in the first season, year two of the twisty Defiance was a very solid run. The expansion of the Earth Republic storyline was a nice addition, and they took several characters in very different directions in ways that actually felt organic to the overall arc. After the way season two ended, we can’t wait to see what comes next.
As for Dominion, critics were largely mixed on the Legion-inspired series, but it took some big swings with soapy sci-fi storytelling and put together one heck of a cast. Even when things got a little crazy, Christopher Egan (Kings) kept the proceedings grounded — and Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Anthony Stewart Head was deliciously shady as a city politician.
Both shows were solid in the ratings, though neither proved to be a breakout hit this fall. Defiance opened season two with 2 million total viewers and a 0.6 demo rating, which slipped to 1.5 mil/0.4 for the finale. Dominion debuted in June to a similar 2 mil/0.6, sliding to 1.5 mil/0.5 for its Aug. 8 finale.
Along with the TV series, Defiance is also buoyed by an ambitious tie-in video game set in the same universe as the show (literally), while the network notes Dominion generated a boatload of social media buzz, with more day-of Twitter activity than any other drama on the same night.
ALL NEW X-MEN
Marvel Comics threw a major twist into the X-Men comic continuity by bringing the original, teenage team to the modern-day — and now, it looks like another one of those misplaced mutants could be getting her own spinoff.
Dubbed All-New X-Men, the ongoing Marvel NOW! run follows the original teenage line-up of Jean Grey, Iceman, Cyclops, Angel and Beast as they are plucked from the past and thrust into a complicated world of mutant politics and battles they don’t quite understand. The run has been a breath of fresh air, and has really helped revitalize the franchise as a whole.
It’s also been a solid success, already spawning one spinoff series that follows young Scott Summers/Cyclops as he heads off to the stars with his space pirate father Corsair. Up next, at least according to series writer Brian Michael Bendis? Possibly the time-displaced Jean Grey, which is a story we’d definitely like to see told.
When asked by a fan about the odds of a Jean Grey standalone comic, Bendis replied he was “locking down plans for many things,” confirming a Jean Grey solo book is “one of the things on [his] list.” Hey, if young Cyclops can get his own ‘book, we’d say Jean has more than earned her time in the spotlight.
As most X-Men fans know, Jean Grey has long been dead in the comic continuity following the events of the Phoenix Saga — but the fresh-faced version strolling around in the modern day was plucked out of time before all that craziness occurred. She’s still had to deal with the fallout, as readers well know, but it’s been great having real-life Jean Grey back with the X-Men.
They’ve introduced some interesting twists to the character, including nifty new powers that have started manifesting in the wake of her future-transplant. Plus, after seeing how her life turns out (i.e. a ton of death and destruction), it’s been fascinating to follow the character as she tries to forge a new path, and that’s a story worth exploring. C’mon, Marvel — make it happen.
BIG HERO 6
A new trailer for Big Hero 6 has landed, and we finally get to see the whole team suit up.
After a string of hits like Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph and the unstoppable Frozen, Walt Disney Animation seems poised to deliver another genre smash this fall with the superhero adventure Big Hero 6. Everything we've seen from the film so far has packed a lot of charm, humor and warmth, and now the latest trailer is here to show us more of all of that, plus what the film has in store when it comes to action.
The film follows Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter), a teenage robotics prodigy living in the fictional futuristic city of San Fransokyo, who forms an unlikely bond with Baymax (Scott Adsit), a medical robot developed by Hiro's older brother. What starts as an odd-couple comedy turns into a struggle against evil after the pair encounter a villain in a Kabuki mask who's controlling a swarm of deadly robots. To stop him, Hiro and Baymax team up with thrillseeker GoGo Tomago (Jamie Chung), neat freak Wasabi (Damon Wayans Jr.), chemistry genius Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez) and comic-book geek Fred (T.J. Miller). At first they're nothing more than a band of nerds, but when Hiro's robotics wizardry outfits them with superhero gear, they just might have what it takes to save the world.
The new trailer focuses heavily on both Hiro's connection to his brother (and how Baymax unites them) and the way the titular hero team comes together, and it's packed with new visual jokes and some cool peeks at action set pieces. If the rest of the film is this entertaining, Disney's hit streak will definitely stay alive.
Check out the trailer below. Big Hero 6 hits theaters Nov. 7.
JUPITER ASCENDING
Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow have released a new trailer for Andy and Lana Wachowski’s Jupiter Ascending, which hits the big screen February 6, 2015.

Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

PREDESTINATION
We heard about a cool new Ethan Hawke time-travel film a few months ago — and now the Looper-esque action flick Predestination finally has a release date.
The film is basically Looper meets TimeCop with a gritty, 1970s twist. It focuses on Hawke’s temporal agent, who is sent back in time to stop future killers from committing crimes. One such case sends him to 1970s New York to avert a bombing while facing off with an old enemy. The world-building seems impressive, and this definitely could be an interesting spin on the old time-travel genre.
The film has been on the lookout for a U.S. distributor for months, and Sony's offshoot distribution company, Stage 6, has finally snagged the rights. Mark your calendars now: Predestination will open Jan. 9, 2015. The film has already opened in New Zealand and Australia (plus the festival circuit) to decent reviews.
If you need a bit more help on the plot, check out the synopsis below:
In mid-’70s New York, a man in a fedora slips into an office building’s boiler room, carrying a mysterious briefcase. He uncovers a bomb, and is attacked while struggling to deactivate it. He succeeds — almost. Horribly disfigured, he’s transported to his agency’s headquarters where he receives a new face. He’s a temporal agent, traveling back and forth through time, altering history, and his assignment — thwart the mass murder perpetrated by the so-called “Fizzle Bomber” — continues. New face, new place. Now he’s undercover as a bartender. He falls into conversation with a tough yet androgynous customer. There’s something off about the guy, who offers to enlighten the agent with “the best story you ever heard”…
Along with the U.S. opening date, the studio has also dropped a trippy new trailer to promote the domestic release.
AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.
The ratings might’ve been a disappointment, but the season two premiere of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was surprisingly awesome — and even snuck in a massive easter egg that was easy to miss.
Ahead of launching a prequel spinoff series later this fall with Agent Carter, Hayley Atwell and some of the Howling Commandos popped up in a flashback scene to open the season premiere to set a new arc about a mysterious 0-8-4.
Carter’s team raids a HYDRA base, where they box up the mysterious artifact that goes on to cause Coulson’s new-look S.H.I.E.L.D. (and poor Agent Hartley) a boatload of problems in the modern-day era. That throwback intro for the mysterious artifact was cool enough, but there’s apparently a really big additional tidbit most viewers didn’t notice.
If you were paying very close attention before they locked up that weird little metal thingie, you'd see that Dum Dum Dugan (Neal McDonough) peeks inside another crate that Carter slams shut before he can open it. But, we do get a peek inside for just a split second. So what’s there? The arm of a blue alien that looks extremely familiar for those who watched season one.
You know, the big mystery alien that spawned that mysterious resurrection fluid that is now pumping through the veins of at least two of our beloved team members? Yeah, that guy. When asked about the potentially huge easter egg, producer Jeph Loeb had this to say to Entertainment Weekly:
“I think you know us well enough to know that we don’t put anything there by accident.”
So what could it mean? For one thing, it seems we’ll definitely be digging deeper into the blue alien mystery, which most fans theorize is a Kree. But, if the body has been kicking around Earth since the 1940s (or much longer, depending on how long HYDRA had it) that adds a whole new layer to the mix. Were ancient aliens kicking around Earth in the Marvel-verse? Was it a fluke crash landing?
MARS TRILOGY
One of the most acclaimed science fiction sagas of the last 25 years is headed for adaptation.
The Wrap reports that producer Vince Gerardis (Game of Thrones, FlashForward) has just landed a development deal at Spike TV for Red Mars, a drama series adapted from Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy, made up of 1993's Red Mars, 1994's Green Mars, and 1996's Blue Mars. The series is considered a modern science fiction classic and garnered a combined two Hugo Awards, two Locus Awards, a Nebula Award and a British Science Fiction Association Award. Robinson will serve as a consultant on the project.
“This series shines a light onto many views of what it means to be human — and asks if can we sustain our humanity under incredible duress,” Spike TV's executive vice president, original series Sharon Levy said. “We are thrilled to partner with such an accomplished producer as Vince Gerardis to tell this incredible and thought-provoking story.”
Featuring dozens of characters and decades of story, The Mars Trilogy is the story of humanity's efforts to colonize and terraform Mars as the Earth suffers from overpopulation. The series explores not only the struggle to make the Red Planet habitable but also the effects that corporations as large as governments, genetic engineering, extended lifespans, further human space exploration and more have on civilization. There's a lot to unpack in these books, so exploring the story via long-form television seems like a good fit, if Spike (a network not known for scripted dramas) can deliver the production value.
So, yet another ambitious genre series is heading to the small screen, provided the development process works out.
HOMO SAPIENS SUPERIOR
What happens when anti-mutant factions set out to create a truther-esque information campaign to turn the world against the X-Men? This, and it’s actually pretty cool.
The latest X-Men movie, Days of Future Past, hasn’t even hit Blu-ray yet, but that doesn’t mean the marketing machine can’t start ramping up as we look toward the sequel. Fresh off word that X-Men auteur Bryan Singer will officially helm 2016’s Apocalypse, the studio has dropped some new viral world-building.
The video also coincides with the launch of two new viral websites — Tandem Initiative and M-Underground — that could potentially tie into Apocalypse. It seems very reminiscent of all the viral goodies surrounding Trask Industries and the mutant alt-history leading up to Days of Future Past’s release. So make note of these groups, because we might be hearing more about them in the months and years ahead.
The piece of footage is set up as a leaked clip stolen from the apparently anti-mutant group Tandem’s servers and released by the pro-mutant M-Underground. We’ve always been impressed with the legwork they’ve put into these X-Men tie-ins, and this one is also no slouch.
Along with all these viral goodies, rumor has it the studio is also cooking up a whole lot more stuff for the coming months to feed Apocalypse. We don't have many details, but Collider reports to have some inside intel, claiming they could be even more ambitious than the Days of Future Past stuff.
also, I've seen some of the other viral stuff coming for X-MEN in the coming week and it's pretty cool. Some of it involves Quicksilver

PETER PAN LIVE
What has NBC done to Christopher Walken's Captain Hook?
Peter Pan Live! executive producer Neil Meron posted a first-look photo of Walken on set as Captain Hook and the Oscar winner is virtually unrecognizable.
The live production stars Girls' Allison Williams as the boy who won't grow up and Walken — who previously worked with producers Meron and Craig Zadan on the film adaptation of Hairspray.
Taylor Louderman plays Wendy Darling, Alanna Saunders is set as Tiger Lily, Kelli O'Hara is playing Mrs. Darling, and Christian Borle is set as both Smee and George Darling.
The live broadcast airs from 8-10 p.m. on Dec. 4. What do you think? Hit the comments below with your thoughts.
THE WALKING DEAD
A new addition to the cast of "The Walking Dead" has been revealed today! The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Tyler James Williams (Peeples, "Go On," "Everybody Hates Chris") is set to play a mysterious character named Noah in the upcoming fifth season, which debuts on AMC next month.
Williams' character will mark the second character named Noah to appear on the series. Parker Wierling played a young man by that name (a resident of Woodbury) in two season three episodes. The overall franchise also has a character named Noah Cruz, who appeared in the prequel video game The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. Given that the Cruz character roughly matches Williams' age and ethnicity, it's possible that that's who we'll be seeing in future episodes.
Season four of "The Walking Dead" ended with Rick and the group outgunned, outnumbered, and trapped in a train car awaiting a grim fate. Season five picks up shortly thereafter. What follows is a story that weaves the true motives of the people of Terminus with the hopeful prospect of a cure in Washington, D.C., the fate of the group's lost comrades, as well as new locales, new conflicts, and new obstacles in keeping the group together and staying alive.
Stories will break apart and intersect. The characters will find love and hate. Peace and conflict. Contentment and terror. And, in the quest to find a permanent, safe place to call home, one question will haunt them… After all they've seen, all they've done, all they've sacrificed, lost, and held on to no matter what the cost... Who do they become?
Based on the comic created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard, Season Five of "The Walking Dead" premieres on Sunday, October 12 at 9:00pm ET/PT. It stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chad Coleman, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Emily Kinney, Danai Gurira and Sonequa Martin-Green.
JOHN WICK
Lionsgate has debuted a new TV spot for their upcoming action-thriller John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves, Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Dean Winters, Bridget Moynahan, Ian McShane, John Leguizmo and Willem Dafoe.
In the film, an ex-hitman comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that took everything from him. With New York City as his bullet-riddled playground, John Wick (Reeves) is a fresh and stylized take on the "assassin genre."
John Wick opens in theaters on October 24.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES
Two more of your favorite TV stars have joined the upcoming "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," based on the Jane Austen re-imagining by Seth Grahame-Smith: "Game of Thrones" actors Lena Headey and Charles Dance.
According to Deadline, the two "GoT" stars have joined the production in as-yet-unannounced roles. The story follows Liz Bennett ( "Downton Abbey" star Lily James) who wants to help defend the English countryside from a zombie invasion while her family wants her to marry into a rich family.
The cast also includes "Doctor Who" vet Matt Smith as Mr. Collins, "Boardwalk Empire" alum Jack Huston as Wickham, plus Sam Riley, Douglas Booth and Bella Heathcote.
STAR WARS
Marvel didn’t wait too long to announce what they’d be doing with the newly reacquired Star Wars license, but fans from the Dark Horse days might’ve been left wanting in regard to stories outside the original trilogy timeline. Well, we have some good news.
Marvel Comics Editor Jordan D. White spoke with Coffee With Kenobi about their long-term plans for the property, and he revealed they’ll definitely be digging into other eras and arcs in the future. White noted that the creative team realizes there are a ton of other great stories to tell in the Star Wars universe — they just want to take a bit of time to work up to them:
“As for other eras, yeah, that is one of the great parts about Star Wars, there are so many terrific points in their history we can explore. With these first series, we wanted to stick all in the same era in order to create the sort of inter-connected universe feel we get between Marvel books. But I am certain we’re going to be turning to those other eras in future series. Heck — I know for a fact we’re working on at least one of those … but we’re not ready to announce it just yet.”
So, if they plan on launching series in other eras down the line, why open up with books set clearly in the original trilogy timeline — specifically between the original 1977 Star Wars movie and its 1980 sequel, The Empire Strikes Back? According to White, it was a conscious effort to go back to the basics of what made the franchise so great to start with and tell fresh stories with players like Luke, Han and Leia:
“It’s all the iconic characters at their peaks. Luke is a new hero still finding his way. Han has just turned from scoundreldom to the rebellion. Leia has just lost her planet and is coming into her own. Vader is the biggest bad guy out there and on their trail. There is something that seemed right to kick things off where it all began. It seemed like the best place to launch.”
We were huge fans of the awesome, varied stories Dark Horse has told with this franchise over the past several years — but it’s hard to argue Marvel’s return to form isn’t a good move to generate some new excitement around the brand leading into Star Wars: Episode VII.
HUNTERS
Syfy is moving forward with its Gale Anne Hurd drama Hunters.
The NBCUniversal-owned cable network announced Tuesday that has handed out a 13-episode series order to the drama based on Whitley Strieber's best-selling novel Alien Hunter. The drama will premiere on Syfy in 2016.
First put in development nearly a year ago, the drama hails from Walking Dead EP Hurd and Universal Cable Productions, where the prolific producer's Valhalla Productions is under an overall deal. The drama was picked up straight to series after a year in development. Casting has not yet been announced.
The series follows a Pennsylvania detective-turned-suspect Flynn Carroll who, after his wife mysteriously goes missing, is determined to prove his innocence and find her. His search leads to evidence that dangerous alien cells are living among us, and the U.S. government has a secret organization in place to thwart their terrorist efforts.
Heroes and V alum Natalie Chaidez will pen the script and executive produce alongside Hurd via the prolific producer's Universal Cable Productions-based Valhalla Entertainment banner.
Hunters arrives as Syfy is making a concerted push to focus more on sci-fi fare a la BattlestarGalactica. The cable network has a huge roster of similarly themed fare set as part of the move including Dominion, 12 Monkeys, Olympus, Z Nation, The Expanse and minis Childhood's End and Ascension. The series joins a roster of original scripted fare including Continuum, Defiance, Haven, Helix and Lost Girl, among others.
OUIJA
Playing board games becomes high-risk behavior in the latest trailer for the forthcoming horror flick Ouija.
Making the events of Jumanji seem like a walk in the park, the new Ouija trailer follows a group of young friends who try to chat with their pal from beyond the grave via the eponymous communication device. Evidently, ghosts don't have smartphones.
The trailer features a number of jolts, particularly one involving oral hygiene. Dentists will not be pleased.
Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel), Ana Coto and Daren Kagasoff (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) star. Stiles White, who co-wrote the script, makes his directorial debut.
Universal — clearly hoping the film is a bigger success than its last attempt at turning a board game into box-office gold, Battleship — releases Ouija on Oct. 24, just in time for Halloween.
BREATH OF BONES
Andrew Adamson, who directed two of the Chronicles of Narnia movies, is attached to helm Breath of Bones, an adaptation of the acclaimed Dark Horse Entertainment comics miniseries.
The three-issue story, later collected into a hardback graphic novel, was written by Steve Niles, a known name in the horror comic field (he created 30 Days of Night), and Matt Santoro. Artist Dave Wachter received a 2012 Russ Manning Award nomination for his gorgeous work.
Bones is set during World War II and tells of a British plane that crashes into a Jewish village. The crash brings Nazi attention, forcing the villagers to defend themselves, with one rabbi and his grandson building a Golem creature and bringing him to monstrous life.
"Telling a story can be tough," Niles said to Heat Vision. "It's the one monster rooted in religion and mysticism, so I wanted to be respectful. I decided to tell it as a World War II fable. It's a story of a grandfather teaching his grandson how to make a monster to defend his village against a Nazi invasion."
Adamson said he was a fan of the book from the outset: "From the moment I saw the cover art, I knew this had the makings of a new classic."
Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg of Dark Horse are producing the adaptation with Adamson and his producing partner at Strange Weather Aron Warner. Jeff Fierson from Strange Weather will executive produce.
Adamson directed the first two Shrek features, as well as the first two Narnia movies: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian. He also directed the war drama Mr. Pip, and last helmed the Cirque du Soleil feature, Worlds Away.
He is repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and Nelson Davis.
GOTHAM
With the series premiere a sizable hit, FOX has released two clips from next week's new episode of "Gotham." Titled "Selina Kyle," it airs next Monday, September 29 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The first clip focuses on Camren Bicondova's Selina Kyle (the future Catwoman) and the other follows Robin Lord Taylor's Oswald "The Penguin" Cobblepot.
"Gotham" is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller ("The Mentalist," "Rome"), "Gotham" follows one cop's rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.
Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Zabryna Guevara, Erin Richards, David Mazouz, Camren Bicondova, David Zayas, and Jada Pinkett Smith star.

STAR WARS REBELS
Disney XD has debuted a new, full trailer for "Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion," the TV movie being released that will set up audiences for the "Star Wars Rebels" TV series. The trailer gives a better sense of the tone of the show than the previously released short film and first seven minutes.
There's a lot of "Star Wars" buzz surrounding "Rebels," especially since executive producer Simon Kinberg says there is a "communication and integration" between the animated TV show and the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VII." "Star Wars Rebels" will be considered part of the "Star Wars" canon.
Both the movie, which premieres Oct. 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Disney Channel, and the subsequent TV series, which premieres Oct. 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Disney XD, will offer the best taste of what the latest iteration of the "Star Wars" saga has in store. Buzz around the series says it's more in keeping with the tone of the original "Star Wars" movies, which should be a delight for old and new fans alike.
Meanwhile, "Star Wars: Episode VII" is slated to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.
MARVEL'S AGENT CARTER
Marvel's Agent Carter" has found its male lead to play opposite Hayley Atwell. Deadline reports "Boardwalk Empire" star Shea Whigham is joining the cast of the series as Roger Dooley, head of the Strategic Scientific Reserve.
Agents Carter, Thompson (Chad Michael Murray) and Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) will report to Dooley when it comes to their missions for the SSR. James D'Arcy will also appear as butler Edwin Jarvis.
Whigham currently stars as Eli Thompson on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," which is currently in its final season. He also appeared in the first season of "True Detective."
11/22/63
Stephen King's time travel saga about a man trying to stop the Kennedy assassination is finally getting filmed.
11/22/63 is one of King's most ambitious novels ever, a massive story that's as much about exploring a particular period in American history as it is about going back in time to stop one of America's most memorable tragedies, and upon its release in 2011 it was met with loads of acclaim. The novel was so buzzed-about that, months before its release, director Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs) was already set to adapt it for the big screen. Demme's deal with King eventually fell through, though, and in 2013 J.J. Abrams picked up the rights to the project for his Bad Robot production company. Just last week we were wondering when Abrams and company would finally do something with those rights, and now we have our answer.
Hulu announced today that they've given 11/22/63 a straight-to-series order, and that the novel will be adapted by writer Bridget Carpenter (Friday Night Lights) into a nine-hour miniseries, marking a major coup for the streaming service as it continues its push for original programming.
“If I ever wrote a book that cries out for longform, event TV programming, 11/22/63 is it," King said as part of the announcement. "I’m excited that it’s going to happen, and am looking forward to working with J.J. Abrams and the whole Bad Robot team.”
For those of you who don't know, 11/22/63 (named for the date of Kennedy's assassination) is the story of high school teacher Jake Epping, who's given access to a portal to the past by his friend Al Templeton. Al, who's dying of cancer, asks Jake to carry out the mission of preventing JFK's assassination, believing that stopping that tragedy will alter the present day for the better, but explains that the portal has a very specific set of rules, one of which being that Jake can only travel to a specific moment in 1958, and must simply live out the years leading up to 1963. Along the way, he tracks the development of Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, falls in love, and prepares for his mission, all the while knowing that time itself doesn't want some events to change.
We don't know yet when we'll see the series, or who'll star in it, but this is good news for fans of King's novel who want to experience an adaptation that doesn't carve huge sections of story out in favor of stripping things down to the running time of a feature film. 11/22/63 is a big book for a reason, and it looks like Hulu's hoping to celebrate that.
X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
It's official: Bryan Singer is back on board to direct X-Men: Apocalypse. And his name is not the only familiar one in the mix.
Although Singer has been talking for a while like he was already going to do the film, there was always the chance that he could not come to terms on his deal to do so. The sexual assault allegations against him, which have since been dismissed, didn't help, either, for a while.
According to Deadline, however, an agreement has been reached and Singer has been signed by Fox to get back behind the camera for his fourth X-Men feature. It probably didn't hurt that his return to the franchise, this summer's X-Men: Days of Future Past, was the highest-grossing of the series ($746 million worldwide) and the most critically acclaimed since the first two (which he also directed).
As for the story, we know that Singer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg have settled on the ancient mutant Apocalypse as the villain, and we also know that the First Class versions of Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) will come back for a third time at bat in a story set 10 years after Days of Future Past.
But Singer and Kinberg definitely plan to introduce young versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm and others into the story as well, so expect to see casting announcements for those roles soon. Will Channing Tatum make his debut as Gambit in this one? Unknown, but possible. And how will Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) fit into the story this time? No idea, but you know they won't make it without him.
Production starts next spring with the film due to be released on May 27, 2016.
POWERS
Sony Pictures Television has today debuted four new images from their upcoming "Powers," based on the comic book series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming.
It has also been revealed that the first footage from the upcoming series will debut during New York Comic Con. Susan Heyward, Noah Taylor, Olesya Rulin, Logan Browning and Eddie Izzard, along with executive producer and co-creator of the graphic novels, Brian Michael Bendis will debut the first footage of the show during their panel on Saturday, October 11 at 3:15 p.m. on the Empire Stage 1E. The panelists will also be autographing a limited edition New York Comic Con exclusive poster for fans at Autograph Table 14 at 1:15pm.
"Powers," an edgy dramatic series from Sony Pictures Television and inspired by the graphic novel series of the same name, follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker (Copley) and Deena Pilgrim (Heyward), who are assigned to investigate cases involving people with extraordinary abilities, referred to as “Powers.” Set amidst today’s paparazzi culture, Powers asks the questions, what if the world was full of superheroes who aren’t actually heroic at all? What if all that power was just one more excuse for mischief, mayhem, murder, and endorsement deals? Enter the men and women of the Powers Division, the only people brave enough to go up against the overpaid, commercialized, superhumans who glide through the sky imposing their power over the crowds below who both worship and fear them.
"From the minute he stepped onto the set Sharlto has invested every part of himself into this role. He adds layers and layers into Christian Walker. He is doing everything I hoped he would do, which is make the television version of this character unique and exciting," said Bendis.
"And Susan, my god! From her very first audition she has embodied the character of Deena Pilgrim. I think people are going to be completely sucked in by both of their performances and unique perspectives on this world that Charlie Huston has built."
"No matter how many guns or super powers you throw into a TV show, no one is going to watch if they don't give a damn about your main characters. Sharlto and Susan are my secret weapons, my super powers; dynamic talents that viewers will definitely give a damn about," adds showrunner and writer Charlie Huston.
"Powers" is produced by Jinxworld and Circle of Confusion in association with Sony Pictures Television. Brian Michael Bendis, Charlie Huston, Remi Aubuchon, Michael Avon Oeming, and David Engel serve as executive producers.
KINGSMAN
20th Century Fox has just released a new trailer for Kingsman: The Secret Service which features a new song by Iggy Azaela.
Based upon the acclaimed comic book by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class), Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Taron Egerton and Samuel L. Jackson star.
The February 13, 2015 release was written by Vaughn and Jane Goldman, who previously teamed up for such movies as X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass and Stardust.
JURASSIC WORLD
Even though production wrapped last month on the upcoming Jurassic World, that's not stopping director Colin Trevorrow from sharing some interesting teases from the set of the upcoming film.
The latest one comes simply with the caption "Autumn" and shows off what remains of the sign that Wayne Knight's Dennis Nedry ran over while attempting to flee after stealing the dinosaur embryos in the first film. We've known for sometime that the new film will focus on a fully-realized version of John Hammond's dream from the original Jurassic Park, and that it would return to the setting of Isla Nublar.
Opening in 3D, 2D and IMAX theaters on June 12, 2015, Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ty Simpkins, Jake Johnson, Nick Robinson, Irrfan Khan, Vincent D’Onofrio, BD Wong, Omar Sy, Judy Greer, Katie McGrath, Lauren Lapkus and Andy Buckley. Jurassic World is a sci-fi terror adventure set 22 years after the horrific events of the original Jurassic Park.

FANTASTIC FOUR PUSHED BACK
The Wrap reports that Fox's Josh Trank-directed reboot of Marvel's First Family has vacated its June 19, 2015, release date in favor of one two months later, on Aug. 7.
That takes the movie out of a ridiculously crowded early summer schedule that will already be bloated with the likes of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, Terminator: Genesys and Mad Max: Fury Road. While the early August release slot at one time seemed like a dumping ground, recent hits like Rise of the Planet of the Apes and especially this year's Guardians of the Galaxy have shown it to be a solid little berth for movies that have something to prove.
And make no mistake, Fantastic Four has a lot to prove, with fans anxious over rumored changes to the canon and divided over the younger-tilting casting of Miles Teller as Reed Richards, Kate Mara as Sue Storm, Michael B. Jordan as Johnny Storm and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm.
One thing this date change does is give Fantastic Four another shot at winning over the fans -- and creating a strong wind at its back going into its release -- at next July's Comic-Con. The movie was a complete no-show at this summer's event -- not even an image or trailer was produced -- leading to more speculation about a troubled project.
By the way, Fantastic Four's move to Aug. 7 means something else had to give, and that something was Assassin's Creed. Fox has now taken its adaptation of the videogame, directed by Justin Kurzel and starring Michael Fassbender, off the release schedule entirely, at least for the moment. That's actually got to be a good thing for everyone concerned, because the picture hadn't even started shooting yet.
All this also gives Trank two extra months to get his movie just right, which is always helpful in these days of films rushing to make release dates.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
Proving that a boy-centric YA film adaptation can click, 20th Century Fox's teen-powered The Maze Runner opened to a pleasing $32.5 million at the North American box office, more than double the $13.1 million debut of Liam Neeson's R-rated action offering A Walk Among the Tombstones.
Shawn Levy's new adult dramedy, This Is Where I Leave You, followed at No. 3 with $11.9 million.
Overseas, Maze Runner also dominated, grossing $37.6 million from 50 markets for a worldwide total of $81.5 million (the film began rolling out in several territories last weekend). The film, based on James Dashner's novel, has yet to open in 27 markets, including nine of the top 15.
Fox wasted no time in announcing that a sequel, Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, will be released Sept. 18, 2015.
And, proving a respite from the downward spiral at the domestic box office, overall revenue for the weekend was up more than 25 percent over of the same weekend last year.
Nabbing an A- CinemaScore, Maze Runner cost Fox $34 million to make and stars Dylan O'Brien (Teen Wolf) Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Kaya Scodelario and Will Poulter. The movie owes a big thanks to younger males, a demo that's become difficult to lure to the multiplex. Younger females, devotees of YA, also turned out in force, but their attendance was expected. Overall, females made up 52 percent of ticket buyers, and males, 48 percent. Nearly 65 percent of the audience was under the age of 25.
"It was a perfect storm," said Fox distribution chief Chris Aronson. "We went after teenagers hard and did everything to eventize this film in a play period never tested before. We accomplished the task."
Maze Runner follows O'Brien's character as he wakes up with no memory inside the center of a giant maze, an area known as The Glade, surrounded by other teen boys who likewise can't remember anything. Threatening them all are vicious creatures known as Grievers. The boys look for a way out of the maze, but it isn't until a mysterious girl arrives that they have a fighting chance.
Wes Ball directed from an adapted script by Noah Oppenheim.
In terms of comparisons, dystopian YA film adaptation Ender's Game opened to $27 million in November 2011 after a $9.8 million Friday. Divergent, also a dystopian story but featuring a female heroine (Shailene Woodley), launched to $54.6 million in March 2014.
From Cross Creek Pictures, Walk Among the Tombstones earned a B+ CinemaScore and came in behind expectations. It also came in well behind Neeson's other recent action films, including this year's Non-Stop, which debuted to $28.9 million. However, that film, like Neeson's Taken franchise or Unknown, was rated PG-13, versus an R for Tombstones (insiders also note Tombstones' darker tone).
"We wish the numbers were stronger but, having said that, we'll see where it goes in the coming weeks," said Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco.
The movie, costing a reported $23 million to make and playing in 2,712 locations, is based on Lawrence Block's best-selling mystery novels and stars Neeson as ex-New York City cop Matt Scudder, who now works as an unlicensed private investigator and is hired by a drug dealer to find the dealer's kidnapped wife.
Females made up 51 percent of the audience, whereas prerelease tracking had showed that older males were most keen on seeing Tombstones (77 percent of ticket buyers were over the age of 25).
Universal is distributing Tombstones in the U.S., while Entertainment One has Canada. Older males, as expected, are most interested in seeing the film, but their wives or girlfriends could have convinced them to see This Is Where I Leave You instead.
This Is Where I Leave You is a marked departure for Levy, who generally sticks to big commercial fare. The dramedy, playing in 2,868 theaters, cost $20 million to make but certainly doesn't lack star power, boasting a cast led by Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne and Jane Fonda. It earned a B+ CinemaScore.
From Warner Bros. and based on Jonathan Tropper's novel, This Is Where I Leave You follows four siblings who reunite at their family home to sit shivah for their father (Tropper wrote the adapted screenplay). The movie made its world premiere earlier this month at the Toronto Film Festival.
"Shawn put together a great cast, and the movie was made for a modest price," said Dan Fellman, head of domestic distribution for Warner Bros.
This Is Where I Leave You was up 28 percent on Saturday, reflecting a strong turnout among older females, who made up 63 percent of the audience, while 86 percent of ticket buyers were over the age of 25. It did especially well on the East Coast, Chicago and Toronto.
Several other Toronto titles debuted this weekend, albeit in more limited runs, including Kevin Smith's Tusk, which A24 rolled out in roughly 600 theaters. The film fell outside the top 10, earning a disappointing $886,144.
Among holdovers, Screen Gems' Idris Elba thriller No Good Deed fell to No. 4 in its second weekend, dipping 58 percent to $10.2 million for a pleasing domestic total of $40 million.
Alcon Entertainment's family offering Dolphin Tale 2 rounded out the top five, falling 43 percent to $9 million for a domestic total of $27.1 million.
Guardians of the Galaxy continued to make news in its eighth outing as it passed up fellow Marvel Studios' title Iron Man 2, grossing $5.2 million domestically and $10.4 million internationally for a worldwide total of $632.2 million. Iron Man 2 took in $624 million globally.

GOTHAM
He's not the Riddler yet, but the actor who's Gotham's Edward Nygma already has a sense of what turns him into a supervillain.
Though it won't feature Batman, Gotham's garnered a lot of interest from fans by billing itself as, in many ways, the origin story of Gotham City's problem with supercrime. While much of the show will follow the crime-solving exploits of Jim Gordon, Harvey Bullock, Renee Montoya and others, it will also focus on the criminal ventures of mob boss Fish Mooney and the sadistic Oswald Cobblepot, while also introducing the young women who will eventually become Catwoman and Poison Ivy.
From a villain perspective, season one of the series seems mostly focused on Cobblepot's transformation into the Penguin, but let's not forget about Cory Michael Smith as Edward "Ed" Nygma, a brilliant young man working for the Gotham City Police Department who will, someday, be one of Bruce Wayne's greatest nemeses. in a new interview, Smith said he doesn't entirely know the character's future, but he does know that, from the start, Nygma's fascinated by Gotham's new crimes, even though he's working for the good guys.
"These crazy crimes are happening in Gotham—slightly theatrical and awesome and very much honoring the adventurousness of the comic books. Everyone else is taking it so seriously because they’re the police and they want to solve the crime, but Ed’s kind of getting caught up in how cool this s–t is," he said. "I mean, some of these crimes are just fascinating. Just fascinating. And that’s what Ed loves."
Those of us who've followed Batman's villains for a long time will be watching Gotham with interest, not just to see how they ultimately become the Arkham Asylum-dwelling baddies we know and love from the comics, but to see how Gotham's story will affect our view of these characters going forward. Will creator Bruno Heller and company give us origin stories that complement what we already know, or will they turn these villains upside down? Smith's not telling, but he does tease the character's less socially adept side, combined with a kind of double-agent quality, and points to both of them as aspects of his eventual transformation.
"[He's] an underappreciated, mistreated, misunderstood guy. And adding in to all that mix, here’s a guy with some social disorder. He’s not necessarily equipped with the interpersonal skills that would lead to calm workplace environment interaction.
"I’m going to be in the police department for a while, and I’m stoked about that because in terms of story, that leaves so many possibilities," he said. "It’s very Dexter of me to be potentially playing both sides. Learning the police department to such a degree that I know how to manipulate the system. So there’s a lot of potential."
Gotham premieres Monday at 8/7C on Fox.
SUPERGIRL COMING TO CBS
If Marvel is in a mostly monogamous TV relationship with ABC, then DC is getting around with every other major network in town. There's Arrow, Flash and iZombie on the CW, Gotham at Fox, Constantine at NBC, and now Supergirl is headed to the land where stories about how one meets a mother take nine years to tell -- CBS.
Producers Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler closed their deal with CBS last night, only a day after the project was introduced to the networks. That's fast. And the rumor is that the commitment to the show is even greater than the one Fox gave to Gotham. But let's move beyond the networks for a second and talk about what we'll be seeing. First of all, yes, this is the Kara Zor-El version of Supergirl who will be taking the stage. Secondly, unlike the Smallville incarnation, this Supergirl will be in her 20s and already have been on Earth for a little while.
It's a tale of a woman deciding it's finally time to step out from behind the safety of being part of the pack and acknowledge that she is unique and that she can help the world in a way that almost no one else can. And that story has plenty of real-life scenarios it can use along with all the typical cape-and-tights trappings.
Berlanti already has a big comic-book adaptation hit with Arrow. But with Flash about to premiere and Supergirl officially a go, it's interesting to see him move away from the power-free Oliver Queen and toward some of the most super-powered heroes in the DC universe. Meanwhile, Adler is bringing more of a comedic sensibility to the proceedings, since her most successful super-powered project was Chuck.
All in all, it's a pretty solid get for CBS, and an exciting thing in general, since a leading female hero isn't something we've seen much of so far from comic-book adaptations.
The next big thing they need to do is cast the lead.
POWER RANGERS
Deadline reports that due to his schedule for the upcoming Star Trek 3, executive producer Roberto Orci has had to drop out of Lionsgate and Saban's upcoming big screen reboot of the Power Rangers. Orci recently completed the first draft of Star Trek 3 with co-writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne which he will also direct. No release date is currently set for that film, but the expectation is that the new film will land in theaters in 2016, just in time for the franchise’s 50th anniversary.
Screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-Men: First Class, Thor) will script the upcoming reboot of Power Rangers, which is described as a modern reinvention of the long-running franchise. In it, a group of ordinary high school kids find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world. It is currently set for release on July 22, 2016.
Saban's "Power Rangers" franchise is the brainchild of Haim Saban, creator and producer of the original "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" hit series that launched in 1993. Following its introduction, "Power Rangers" quickly became the most-watched children's television program in the United States and remains one of the top-rated and longest running boys live-action series in television history. The series follows the adventures of a group of ordinary teens who "morph" into superheroes and save the world from evil. It is seen in more than 150 markets around the world, translated into numerous languages and is a mainstay in the most prominent international children’s programming blocks.
20th Century Fox previously released two feature films, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie in 1995 and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie in 1997.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD
The Suicide Squad made it to the small screen this year, and the big screen might not be far behind.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer and director David Ayer -- whose much-buzzed-about World War II drama Fury hits theaters next month -- is "circling" a Suicide Squad film at Warners. A script for the film by The Jungle Book writer Justin Marks has been around since 2011, but we haven't heard much about it since the studio's plans to get the Justice League on the big screen kicked into high gear in the wake of Man of Steel.
Though the Suicide Squad team name was first introduced in 1959, the team really took off with writer John Ostrander's lineup under the leadership of Amanda Waller in 1987. Ostrander's run established much of the tone and structure of Suicide Squad as we know it today and elevated characters like Deadshot to fan-favorite prominence. A version of the team popped up on Arrow this past season, and DC's recently unveiled New Suicide Squad series has found critical acclaim. The characters still aren't as hot as the likes of Batman and Superman (who is in the DC Universe?), but their star does seem to be rising.
Warner Bros. reportedly began a search for a Suicide Squad director earlier this year, which suggests that the film is on that list of mystery dates the studio unveiled last month. Warners hasn't commented on Ayer directing the film, but if he signs on, and if Fury delivers on its buzz, the studio will have an acclaimed director with gritty action experience ready to deliver supervillain covert ops on the big screen.
So, after all of these months talking about almost nothing but Justice League, it looks like Suicide Squad is headed to the big screen too.
DOCTOR WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL
The BBC has finally confirmed the list of guest stars for this year’s upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special; let's just say things are about to get FROSTY.
As we reported on Monday (it was still a rumor back then), Shaun of the Dead’s Nick Frost (The Cornetto Trilogy) will indeed drop in on Doctor Who for a guest-starring stint in what may be the coolest piece of Who casting news we’ve heard in a while.
Frost will be joined by Nathan McMullen (Misfits) and Michael Troughton (Breathless) -- who happens to be the son of Second Doctor Patrick Troughton. Michael's brother David also guest-starred on Doctor Who a few years back, more specifically in the magnificent Russell T Davies-penned episode "Midnight."
Below is the BBC’s official press release :
Production on 2014's Doctor Who Christmas episode has begun, with a host of British acting talent set to appear. The Christmas special, a cracker of a highlight in the festive season’s schedule, will air this Christmas on BBC One and promises to be an action-packed, unmissable adventure.
Nick Frost, actor and screenwriter, has starred in numerous hit film and television roles, including Spaced, The World’s End, Shaun Of The Dead, Hot Fuzz, Cuban Fury and Paul, which he also wrote.
Nick comments: “I'm so thrilled to have been asked to guest in the Doctor Who Christmas Special, I'm such a fan of the show. The read-through was very difficult for me; I wanted to keep stuffing my fingers into my ears and scream 'No spoilers!' Every day on set I’ve had to silence my internal fan-boy squeals!"
Michael Troughton (Breathless, The New Statesman), who has recently returned to acting, will follow in his father’s footsteps by appearing in Doctor Who. His father, Patrick Troughton, played the second incarnation of the Doctor.
They will be joined by Natalie Gumede (Coronation Street, Ideal, Strictly Come Dancing), Faye Marsay (Pride, The White Queen, Fresh Meat) and Nathan McMullen (Misfits, Casualty).
Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer, says: “Frost at Christmas - it just makes sense! I worked with Nick on the Tintin movie many years ago and it's a real pleasure to lure him back to television for a ride on the TARDIS.”
The Doctor Who Christmas Special will air on BBC One. Written by Steven Moffat and directed by Paul Wilmshurst (Strike Back, Combat Kids), it will be shot in Cardiff at BBC Wales Roath Lock Studios.
ROAD TO OZ
The man who brought to life the magical world of Oz is getting his own big-screen treatment.
New Line Cinema has preemptively scooped up spec script Road to Oz, written by hot rising talent Josh Golden. Beau Flynn will produce via his New Line-based FlynnPictureCo.
This is how hot Golden and Road to Oz are: The screenwriter and his script, which chronicles the early days of whimsical author L. Frank Baum, are finalists for the 2014 Academy Nicholl Fellowships, which were announced earlier this week.
Baum was a prolific writer, known for the best-selling children's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. He wrote 13 sequels to the hit book, which was famously adapted into the 1939 film starring Judy Garland (New Line's parent, Warner Bros. Pictures, owns the rights to that film). Other than the Oz series, Baum also wrote more than two dozen other books including Dot and Tot of Merryland, The Sea Fairies and Sky Island.
Baum's Oz tales have stood the test of time, with the 1939 film now a classic, perennially playing on screens and remaining a solid merchandising performer. Wicked, based on the story, is one of the Broadway's biggest hits. And Disney proved that the Oz world still works on the big screen with the 2013 film Oz the Great and Powerful. Starring James Franco and Mila Kunis, the prequel was a box office smash, earning $493.3 million worldwide and having the 10th highest domestic box office gross of the year.
Movies about authors and the stories behind their most famous works tend to attract high-class talent. Finding Neverland saw Johnny Depp as J.M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan, and scored six Oscar nominations. Last year's Saving Mr. Banks was also awards bait with a cast that included Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks, Colin Farrell and Paul Giamatti.
Golden worked with Nellie Bellflower, who produced Finding Neverland, and Michael Mislove on developing the script. Bellflower and Mislove will now also produce Road to Oz with Flynn.
Scott Sheldon will oversee the project for FlynnPicture Co. Michael Disco and Sam Brown are shepherding it for New Line. The plan is to attach a director as soon as possible.
FLASH
The CW has released quick TV spots for the upcoming "Arrow" spin-off "The Flash" which feature a few bits of new footage from the series.
"The Flash" arrives from co-creators Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, who, along with Geoff Johns, wrote the pilot episode which was helmed by "Arrow" pilot director David Nutter. Gustin will star as the titular hero along with Candice Patton as Iris West, Jesse L. Martin as Iris's father, Detective West, Michelle Harrison? as Barry’s mother Nora Allen and many others, including John Wesley Shipp, from the original "The Flash" TV series, as Barry’s father.
Set to premiere on October 7, "The Flash" will air on Tuesdays this fall.

DEADPOOL
After the relative success of X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Wolverine, there’d been rumblings Fox might expand their X-Men franchise with a few new spinoffs — and they didn’t have to look too far for ideas.
A Deadpool film has been in the works ever since Ryan Reynolds portrayed the Merc With A Mouth in 2009’s awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but the proposed R-rated take on the character made the studio nervous and its been languishing on the shelf ever since. Now, five years later, they’ve finally decided to dust ol' Wade Wilson off and give him another shot.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, that long-gestating Deadpool movie is finally getting made. The studio has slated the film to open in theaters on Feb. 12, 2016. It will be directed by Tim Miller, though there’s still no confirmation that original star Reynolds will be back to portray the character. We’d call the odds likely, but a deal is apparently not in place. Yet.
Fans have been clamoring for a Deadpool movie for years, and we’re psyched to see the project finally (finally) get off the ground. Of course, we still don’t know if we’ll be getting the R-rated version fans are wanting or a watered-down PG-13 script. They could also scrap the existing script entirely and start fresh. We just don't know. It’d be a shame if they tried to tone the character down, though. If there’s any property that’d be best served by an R-rating, it’s Deadpool.
MACHINIMA
Some of DC’s best films as of late have come on the animated side, and the company is beefing up its Justice League commitment with an ambitious new online series that promises to put a “dark” spin on the franchise.
Dubbed Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles, the three-part animated series is set to launch in the spring of 2015 on the male-skewing online video service Machinima. As a point of reference, the service has previous hosted shows such as Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome and Mortal Kombat: Legacy.
According to Variety, the series will be set in a newly conceived DC universe where Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are much darker versions of the heroes that people know. The series is based on Bruce Timm’s (Batman Beyond) upcoming animated film Justice League: Gods & Monsters, coming in 2015. The online episodes will premiere in the weeks leading up to the film’s release.
If you’re wondering about the Machinima connection, Warner Bros. invested $18 million in the online service in March, so this represents the first bit of synergy from the deal. DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson noted the online avenue represents a unique, new way to introduce animated content:
“We are committed to delivering DC Entertainment’s extensive line-up of world-class characters and stories to audiences across all platforms and formats. ‘Justice League: Gods and Monsters’ is an exciting opportunity to bring alternate versions of DC Comics’ iconic Justice League characters to Machinima, and we look forward to bringing this new animated shortform series to life with our partners across Warner Bros.”
Despite the fact that we’re getting a little tired of the “dark” schtick, we’re psyched to see how the series will turn out, especially considering its being spun off from Timm’s upcoming film. The guy is a legit legend when it comes to the golden age of late 1990’s DC animated shows. He worked on everything from Batman Beyond, to Batman: The Animated Series and Superman —so he definitely has the chops to put a spin on these characters.
STAR WARS EPISODE VII
Thanks to a boatload of flyover set pics, we’ve already gotten a preliminary look at the practical sets being developed for Han Solo’s iconic Millennium Falcon that’ll be featured in Star Wars: Episode VII — now we have an official, well, flyover look. Oh, plus the Batmobile.
Mega-directors J.J. Abrams and Zack Snyder seem to be involved in a weird, geeky battle of crossovers, and Abrams just took a nice shot across the bow. The bantering was seemingly started by Snyder after he tweeted some mashup shots of Star Wars combined with the Batman v Superman film he’s currently shooting.
So Abrams fired back with this video, which is a cheeky little (super-tight) flyby of the Falcon’s exterior set to John Williams’ iconic Star Wars score ... which is then replaced by the Dark Knight theme, as the flyby finally lands on a tiny, familiar piece of Bat-lore hidden on the underside of Han’s ship. Well played, Abrams. Well played.
KING ARTHUR
Astrid Berges-Frisbey is in talks to play Guinevere, the iconic lover of Arthur Pendragon, in Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur, Warner Bros.’ epic retelling of the British legend.
Charlie Hunnam is starring as Arthur, the young man whose journey to the throne the Guy Ritchie-directed movie is recounting.
Idris Elba is already on board as Bedivere, the right-hand man of Arthur’s father, who teaches the lad how to be a leader.
Guinevere, of course, is Arthur’s ladylove, who eventually betrays him for the knight Lancelot, creating a messy triangle that contributes to the downfall of shimmering Camelot.
In Ritchie’s movie, the first of a planned series, the love story is in the blooming stages, with the young princess saving the young prince and helping him believe in himself.
Lionel Wigram, Akiva Goldsman,Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold are producing. Niija Kuykendall and Cate Adams are overseeing for the studio.
Berges-Frisbey is the Spanish actress who nabbed the high-profile role of the mermaid Syrena in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. She also appeared in Mike Cahill’s I Origins.
GOTHAM
Following videos featuring the likes of Oswald Cobblepot, Fish Mooney and Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock, FOX has released another new profile promo for their upcoming series “Gotham.” This time focusing on Gordon’s fiancee Barbara Keen, as played by Erin Richards, the video also features star Ben McKenzie and quite a bit of new footage from the upcoming series.
“Gotham” is an origin story of the great DC Comics super villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist,” “Rome”), “Gotham” follows one cop’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.
Also starring Donal Logue, Sean Pertwee, Zabryna Guevara, Robin Lord Taylor, David Mazouz, Camren Bicondova, David Zayas, and Jada Pinkett Smith, “Gotham” will premiere on FOX on September 22.

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES
That's right -- the "Doctor Who" star is traveling back in time to the world of Jane Austen... and animated corpses. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Smith is joining the film adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies."
The film, which is based on the Seth Grahame-Smith novel of the same name, is a horror-comedy take on Austen's iconic novel, "Pride and Prejudice," and follows Liz Bennett ( "Downton Abbey" star Lily James), a woman who thinks she should help defend the English countryside from a zombie plague while her family thinks she should focus on marrying into a wealthy family.
Matt Smith is set to play Mr. Collins, a parson who asks Liz to be his wife. He joins a cast which already includes Jack Huston ( "Boardwalk Empire"), Sam Riley ("Maleficent"), Douglas Booth ("Noah," "The Pillars of the Earth"), Bella Heathcote ("Dark Shadows"), and the previously mentioned James.
Filming is set to begin on Sept. 24.
DOCTOR STRANGE
The U.K.'s Pinewood Studios might be getting a bit busier in the near future. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel's upcoming "Doctor Strange" is reportedly expected to shoot at the Pinewood Shepperton facilities in preparation for a summer 2016 release date.
"Doctor Strange" follows a neurosurgeon who loses the ability to use his hands and eventually turns to the mystic arts and becomes the "Sorcerer Supreme." The film is being directed by Scott Derrickson ("Deliver Us From Evil") and is eyeing Joaquin Phoenix for the lead role.
Although no official statement has been made, the move would make sense considering that Pinewood has already been home to several Marvel and Disney films -- Disney is the parent company of Marvel -- such as "Thor: The Dark World," "Captain America: The First Avenger," the recent "Guardians of the Galaxy," the currently filming "Star Wars: Episode VII," and more.
"Doctor Strange" is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as is "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D," which premieres Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC. Screen Daily reports "Doctor Strange" is targeted for a July 8, 2016 release date.
AGENT CARTER NEWS
James D'Arcy has been cast to star alongside Hayley Atwell ("Captain America: The First Avenger") as butler extraordinaire Edwin Jarvis in ABC's drama " Agent Carter," reports Marvel.
The upcoming mid-season series set in 1946 follows Peggy Carter (Atwell) as she learns how to balance her administrative work with her covert missions for Howard Stark. Not only will Jarvis be Stark's butler, but he will also be an unexpected ally to Carter. D'Arcy ( "Broadchurch," "Let's Be Cops," "Cloud Atlas") joins a cast which already includes Chad Michael Murray and Enver Gjokaj ( "Extant," "Marvel's The Avengers").
So does D'Arcy's fictional "Agent Carter" name ring any bells? If you're a fan of the "Avengers" franchise, you might remember Tony Stark spending a good amount of his time communicating with his artificial intelligence system, J.A.R.V.I.S. (Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding.)
ARROW
Arrow's supervillain roster continues to grow. Tuesday it was announced that Captain Boomerang, aka Digger Harkness, will appear in the third season. Like most of Arrow's guest stars, the role has been filled by a Spartacus alum.
According to EW, Harkness will be played by Nick Tarabay. He "is a former A.R.G.U.S operative, highly skilled in martial arts and espionage, with a deadly thirst for vengeance against his former employers." Harkness will appear in the seventh and eighth episodes, with the latter introducing a Flash crossover. In the comics, the villain has been linked to both the Suicide Squad and the Rogues.
The Flash has already tapped some members of the Rogues to appear during its debut season (i.e., Captain Cold and Heat Wave). As stated earlier, Tarabay is known for his role as Ashur on Spartacus. He also played a Klingon in last year's Star Trek Into Darkness.
Arrow returns Oct. 8 on The CW.
AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.
We still have a week to wait until Marvel’s flagship TV series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., returns to ABC, but the network has dropped new clips that give us a sneak peek at all the new additions.
They’re expanding the cast quite a bit in year two, following that insane season-one finale that found Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) tasked with rebuilding S.H.I.E.L.D. in the shadows on a shoestring budget. The first two clips find Lucy Lawless’ Agent Isabelle Hartley in deep cover, running afoul of Coulson’s gang.
There’s also the introduction of comic-based Marvel baddie Crusher Creel/The Absorbing Man (Brian Patrick Wade), referred to here as a “bulletproof assassin” who steals classified S.H.I.E.L.D. intel, as he blows up an operation and makes off with the goods. He seems to be a formidable foe for the season opener, and the guy can definitely take some bullets and keep on rolling.
Season two debuts Sept. 23 on ABC.
JUSTICE LEAGUE
Batman and Superman are teaming up again, this time in a new limited-run series.
Machinima has landed a three-part Justice League series from Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment. The series, called Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles, is set to launch in spring of 2015.
This marks the first major move for Machinima, a YouTube multichannel network, since Warner Bros. invested heavily in the company earlier this year.
"With Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles, Machinima will be the very first place fans can experience a new vision for DC Comics’ beloved Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman characters," Machinima CEO Chad Gutstein said in a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter.
The series was created by Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett, who both worked as producers on Batman: The Animated Series. The new series is based on the original animated film Justice League: Gods & Monsters, executive produced by Timm and co-produced by Burnett. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is releasing the film in 2015. Meanwhile, Warner Bros.' live-action Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is one of the most-anticipated films of 2016.
"We couldn’t be happier to be announcing our first new digital series today, and we’re even more excited that it’s a collaboration with such accomplished storytellers as Bruce Timm and Alan Burnett, who have been responsible for some of the most innovative and creative DC Universe projects," said Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. animation and digital series.

LUCIFER
Because there aren't enough DC superhero shows on TV -- this fall's premieres bring that total up to four on-air, not to mention a few more in various stages of development -- FOX is developing a show on the company's comic book property "Lucifer."
According to Deadline, the network has ordered a pilot that would see the character Lucifer Morningstar, who was first introduced in "The Sandman" series, leaving his post as the Lord of Hell and opening a piano bar in Los Angeles (maybe not that much of a change after all).
The show, from "Californication" creator and executive producer Tom Kapinos and Warner Bros. TV, has been given a put pilot commitment, which means the network will have to pay some stiff penalties if the project doesn't air.
ARROW - BLOOPER REEL
With the eagerly anticipated release of Arrow's second season on DVD and Blu-ray today comes a funny (and cool) blooper reel.
And now the video has found its way online, and we have it here to share with you!
As you guys may already know, we do love ourselves a good gag reel, and this one has all the hits: goofs, mistakes, mishaps and lots of swearing. Heck, even Deathstroke (Manu Bennett) gives us a little song and dance. Minus the song. Can't have it all.
Season three of Arrow will premiere on The CW on Oct. 8.
SKULL ISLAND
Legendary's King Kong origin story, Skull Island, will be led by an actor who's already got a massive genre fan base.
The announcement that Legendary Pictures -- a studio that's already handling the successful reboot of the Godzilla franchise -- would also be returning to King Kong with the 2016 prequel Skull Island was one of the biggest surprises of the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con. No one expected the announcement, and we still don't quite know what the film will be about, but we now know who'll direct the flick that will explore "the cinematic origins" of Kong, and we also know who will star.
Legendary announced today that Thor, The Avengers and Crimson Peak star Tom Hiddleston has joined the film as its lead. We still don't know the name of Hiddleston's character, or anything else about his role in the plot, but right away, this lends serious intrigue to the still-mysterious project. Robert Downey Jr. is the big fish of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to be sure, but after winning over audiences (and pretty much all of Tumblr) in The Avengers and two Thor films, Hiddleston is inarguably its biggest breakout star, and acclaimed roles in films like Only Lovers Left Alive have endeared him to genre fans even more. Quite a few fans will flock to Skull Island just to see him as part of the adventure.
Legendary also announced that the film will be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, a filmmaker best known for his coming-of-age drama The Kings of Summer (one of the breakout hits of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival) and for TV work on shows like MTV's monster-hunting mockumentary Death Valley, the Comedy Central series Mash Up and the new FX comedy You're the Worst. This will be his first big-budget film effort, but don't forget, Godzilla was Gareth Edwards' first big-budget film effort, and look how that turned out.
Skull Island, featuring a script by Godzilla writer Max Borenstein, is slated to hit theaters in November 2016.
POWERS
Here's another comic-book property for your TV schedule. If you're a fan of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming's Powers, check out the PlayStation Network's adaptation. The series is headlined by Sharlto Copley and Susan Heyward, who play Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim.
USA Today published the first photo of the duo together. Bendis, who serves as executive producer, spoke about what viewers can expect from the show. If you want a play-by-play of the comic, don't hold your breath. He explained that this version of Powers is a "different experience."
When Copley auditioned for Walker, he was nothing like the character on the page. Fellow producer Charlie Huston says his first impression was, "I don't know what kind of Walker that is, but I totally want to see it." As for Deena, he had an easier time casting Heyward.
"She is this amazing fireball," Huston says. "You do 12-hour days and it's getting into 10 p.m. and you're in a parking garage and all you can smell is gas fumes and you're eating stale pizza, and Susan is down at the end of the ramp doing jujitsu kicks, spinning around and ready to go."
This isn't the first attempt to bring Powers to the small screen. Back in 2009, FX greenlit a pilot that featured Jason Patric and Lucy Punch as the leads. Powers is currently shooting in Atlanta for a 10-episode season. The first two episodes are directed by David Slade. The series is expected to debut sometime in December.
HELIX - SEASON 2
The first season of Syfy’s Helix was a taut sci-fi thriller with some positively insane ideas, all thrown together in a (slightly too) ambitious mixed bag. Well, good news — season two looks even crazier.
The network debuted the first teaser trailer for Helix’s return during the debut of the new zombie series Z Nation last week, and that footage has finally made its way online. What do we learn? The days of freezing our tails off in the Arctic are long, long gone. Oh, Ronald D. Moore, what are you up to this time?
Season one ended with a positively insane cliffhanger, and season two looks to dive right back into the crazy. In a good way. It’s admittedly brief, but we get a whole lot of info packed into a small package. There seem to be some “vectors” on a small boat that is being investigated, and part of the action seemingly takes place in a warm, jungle-like environment. Hey, what better way to change things up from Arctic Biosystems?
We also get to see much of the principal cast back in action, and we’re happy to say the talented Neil Napier’s Dr. Peter Farragut will apparently have a lot more to do than menace the team this time around. Yay!
INTERSTELLAR
The official U.S. one-sheet for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Interstellar has been released, and for those looking for clues about the movie’s still-mysterious plot — well, it might involve snow and upside-down mountains. Or maybe not.
The image was premiered by British movie magazine Empire, and it shows Matthew McConaughey’s character wandering around in a spacesuit on rocky terrain, with snow falling around him and, curiously, what appears to be a mountain range floating in the sky above his head.
The tagline “The End of Earth Will Not Be the End of Us” appears above the title, although whether this means that McConaughey is wandering around on an alien planet or just particularly inhospitable terrain on a dead Earth is far from clear — precisely as director Nolan intended it, no doubt. For now, all that is clear is that McConaughey will get a cool-looking spacesuit in the movie, and there will be something that looks like snow. Which, admittedly, is still arguably more than we learned from the last trailer.
Interstellar will be released Nov. 7.

DAREDEVIL NEWS
Yet another new name has been added to the casting list for "Daredevil." Marvel.com reveals actor Scott Glenn has joined the show as the mentor of Matt Murdock.
Glenn will play Stick, the martial artist who trains Murdock's Daredevil to be the superhero he becomes in the 13-episode Netflix series. Considering "Daredevil" has been filming all summer, chances are Glenn will have a small -- or maybe even flashback -- role.
"Stick is one of the most important figures in Matt Murdock's life and Scott Glenn embodies all the qualities of someone so integral to this hero's journey," Jeph Loeb, Marvel's Head of Television, tells Marvel.com. "There are few actors who could bring such the authenticity, gravitas and charisma to such a key role in Matt's journey to become the super hero we call Daredevil."
Also starring in "Daredevil" are Charlie Cox as Murdoch, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page and Elden Hanson as Foggy Nelson, as well as Rosario Dawson and Vincent D'Onofrio. The series is slated to premiere in 2015 on Netflix.
THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY
The final chapter of The Hunger Games begins here, and Katniss is going to war.
This time three years ago, you would be forgiven for having never heard of Suzanne Collins' bestselling dystopian novels about a young girl who, after a moment of self-sacrifice, enters a fight-to-the-death competition and eventually becomes a national symbol of rebellion. Now, though, The Hunger Games saga is a pop-culture phenomenon that's grown far beyond its young adult roots, and the third film based on the series -- Mockingjay Part 1 -- is pretty much guaranteed to be one of the year's biggest movies.
In the wake of the events of Catching Fire, the Hunger Games are in tatters and the Capitol of Panem is in damage-control mode, while Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) is adjusting to a new life inside a rebellion led by President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore). Her friend Gale (Liam Hemsworth) and mentor Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) are by her side, but Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) remains a Capitol captive, a puppet to President Snow (Donald Sutherland). The games are over, there's nothing left but fighting, and as Katniss' battle begins, her courage will change Panem forever.
Sadly, we'll have to wait until 2015 to see how the entire saga really wraps up in Mockingjay Part 2, and we don't yet know where Part 1 will leave us hanging, but if this trailer is any indication, we're in for plenty of action, drama and heartbreak.
Mockingjay Part 1 also stars Natalie Dormer, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. It hits theaters Nov. 21.
MORE BOURNE?
Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass just may have another Bourne movie up their sleeve.
Despite months of denials, and months of rumors, sources say Damon and Greengrass are indeed talking to Universal about bringing the amnesiac assassin back to the big screen.
And here’s the kicker: Greengrass would not only direct, but also write the script. (The Bourne trilogy was written by Tony Gilroy, among a handful of others scribes, and this would be the first time Greengrass, who wrote United 93 and directed the second and third Bourne installments, will have a hand in penning the adventures.)
If a deal is made — and talks are only in the early stages — it sets the stage for a return of the 21st century’s first screen hero who threatened to upstage Bond. With their kinetic and visceral style, the movies made Damon into an A-lister who was able to command tens of millions for the sequels as the franchise raked in almost a billion dollars worldwide.
Universal moved on without Damon and Greengrass when it made Bourne Legacy, the 2012 spinoff starring Jeremy Renner as spy Aaron Cross and giving Gilroy his shot at directing an installment of a franchise he was so instrumental in shaping.
Universal had set a sequel to Legacy, which was to have been directed by Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin, for July 16, 2016, but there is now talk that the sequel could move to make room for the reunion movie.
THE FLASH
Barry Allen is reuniting with his old love. Sort of.
The CW’s Flash reboot has tapped original CBS series star Amanda Pays to reprise her role as Dr. Tina McGee, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The genetics expert was the main ally and love interest of the titular superhero, played by John Wesley Shipp, who recurs as Barry Allen’s father on the CW series.
On the Arrow spin-off, Dr. McGee returns to Central City as an employee of a rival company to STAR Labs.
The Flash premieres Tuesday, October 7 at 8/7c.
DOCTOR WHO
"Doctor Who" is back in full swing with Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman starring in the series' eighth season (or 34th, to longtime fans) and the show has today revealed a trailer for next weekend's "Time Heist," the season's fifth episode.
The Doctor turns bank robber when he is given a task he cannot refuse: steal from the most dangerous bank in the cosmos. With the help of a beautiful shape-shifter and cyber-augmented gamer, the Doctor and Clara must fight their way past deadly security and come face to face with the fearsome Teller, a creature of terrifying power that can detect guilt.
Written by Stephen Thompson ("Sherlock") and Steven Moffat ("Sherlock"), directed by Douglas Mackinnon (Silent Witness), and guest starring Keeley Hawes ("Upstairs, Downstairs"), "Time Heist" premieres Saturday, September 20 at 9:00pm ET.

AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.
You can almost feel the tension in the new photos for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2.
Spartacus staple Lucy Lawless and British actor Nick Blood make their debut in the Sept. 23 premiere as veteran S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Isabelle Hartley and mercenary Lance Hunter, respectively, and judging from the body language on display, their interaction with May is not warm and fuzzy.

CSI: CYBER
Luke Perry is logging on to CSI: Cyber.
The 90210 vet is joining CBS’ upcoming CSI spin-off in a potentially recurring role that promises to shed light on Patricia Arquette’s character, Special Agent Avery Ryan.
Perry will play Nick Dalton, a former FBI agent who was destined to run the cyber unit in Washington DC. After a classified falling out, Dalton set his sights on becoming a “futurist” for the private sector. According to a Cyber insider, Dalton will hold many secrets to Avery’s backstory.
Born of an April episode of CSI proper and inspired by the work of real-life cyber psychologist Mary Aiken, CSI: Cyber centers on the FBI’s Cyber Crime Division, which targets illegal activities that start in the mind, live online, and play out in the real world.
The cast also includes Friends With Better Lives‘ James Van Der Beek as FBI Agent Elijah Mundo, Community‘s Charley Koontz as Agent Daniel Grummitz, Peter MacNicol (Numb3rs) as Avery’s supervisor, Assistant Director Stavros Sifter and Shad Moss (aka Bow Wow) cyber-intrusion savant Brody “Baby Face” Nelson.
CBS is eyeing a midseason launch for the CSI spin-off.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson's new thriller No Good Deed sprinted past family offering Dolphin Tale 2 to win the North American box-office race with $24.5 million from 2,175 theaters, marking another win for producer Will Packer and Screen Gems.
Dolphin Tale 2, from Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros., came in on the low end of expectations, grossing $16.6 million for a second-place finish. It wasn't able to match the $19.2 million opening of Dolphin Tale in September 2011, never welcome news for a sequel. Dolphin Tale 2, however, did earn an A CinemaScore so it could have staying power (and the first film had the advantage of being released in 3D).
The other big headline was Marvel Studio and Disney's Guardians of the Galaxy, which has become the first film of 2014 to hit the $300 million mark domestically. Globally, the tentpole has crossed $600 million to finish Sunday with a total $611.5 million.
Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles also celebrated a milestone as it crossed the $300 million mark worldwide, including a domestic total of $181 million through Sunday.
And the late James Gandolfini's final film, The Drop, placed a strong No. 6 with $4.2 million from only 809 theaters.
Overseas, 20th Century Fox's YA film adaptation The Maze Runner opened ahead of its Sept. 19 U.S. launch to a strong $8.3 million from five markets, led by Mexico ($2.6 million) and pacing ahead of Divergent.
Heading into the weekend, tracking services were divided as to No Good Deed's potential, although more bullish observers had it clearing $20 million. The movie benefited from being the only new title in the market targeting black audiences and cost a modest $13 million to make (that doesn't include marketing costs). No Good Deed earned a B+ CinemaScore.
Still, the slide at the North American box office continued. Revenue was once again down from a year ago, when Insidious: Chapter 2 topped the chart with $40.3 million. Last weekend, revenue topped out at $64.7 million, the worst showing since just after 9/11, while year-to-date revenue is down 5.6 percent.
Packer, the force behind Screen Gems' Think Like a Man series and Obsessed, produced No Good Deed along with Lee Clay (Packer's credits also include Universal's Ride Along). Elba starred in Obsessed, which debuted to $28.8 million, while Henson is a lead in the Think Like a Man franchise.
Directed by Sam Miller (Luther), No Good Deed stars Henson as a district attorney turned stay-at-home mom living an ideal life in the suburbs until a charming convict (Elba) shows up at her door. Kate del Castillo and Henry Simmons co-star. Females fueled the film, making up 60 percent of the audience.
Dolphin Tale cost roughly $36 million to produce. Both the original and the sequel center around Winter, the real-life dolphin rescued by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, and her two young human friends, played by Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff (the actual Winter stars in both films).
This time out, the trio befriend a baby dolphin, Hope. The film also tells the story of Mandy, a rehabilitated dolphin released back into the wild. Charles Martin Smith returned to direct Dolphin Tale 2, reuniting with stars Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman and Kris Kristofferson. Newcomers include Lee Karlinsky, Julia Jordan and surfer Bethany Hamilton, playing herself.
The Drop, from Fox Searchlight and Chernin Entertainment, stars Gandolfini opposite Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace. Directed by Michael R. Roskam, the crime drama, set in Brooklyn, made its world premiere last weekend at the Toronto Film Festival.
Searchlight said The Drop played well in both art houses and suburban multiplexes, pointing to Gandolfini's draw. Next weekend, the film will be playing in north of 1,000 locations.

DAREDEVIL ON NETFLIX
The Marvel universe is expanding onto Netflix with Daredevil in early 2015, and showrunner Steven S. DeKnight promises it’ll probably be a little different than what we’re used to from the movies and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
More than just about anyone else on the roster, Daredevil is a character that could go dark and still stay extremely loyal to the comic canon. This isn’t Iron Man, or Thor. In a lot of ways, Daredevil is like a blind, poor Batman (albeit with radar sense), and it sounds like DeKnight wants to embrace that gritty side of Matt Murdock.
During an interview with Paste, DeKnight touched on the character’s history and what story has inspired him the most from the annals of Daredevil history. After hearing his passion for the character, we’re even more excited to get a look at this series:
“With this version of Daredevil, we wanted it to be grounded, gritty, as realistic as we could portray. That naturally fits in with the Daredevil character. Matt Murdock, on a regular basis, would get the s*** beat out of him. That’s one thing that makes him a great character. He’s not super strong. He’s not invulnerable. In every aspect, he’s a man that’s just pushed himself to the limits, he just has senses that are better than a normal humans. He is human. The other thing that really drew me to this character is that he’s one of the most morally grey of the heroes…
He’s a lawyer by day, and he’s taken this oath. But every night he breaks that oath, and goes out and does very violent things. The image that always stuck in my mind was the Frank Miller Elektra run where he’s holding Bullseye over the street, and he lets Bullseye go because he doesn’t want Bullseye to ever kill anyone again. When I read that originally, when I was young, I’d never seen anything like that in comics. Superman scoops up the villain and puts them in jail. This time the hero didn’t do that. It was a morally grey ground that I found absolutely fascinating. There are two sides to this character. He’s literally one bad day away from becoming the The Punisher! Frank Castle went just a little bit further than he did. Daredevil has no qualms about beating the hell out of somebody. He’s not going to tie them up with his webs! He’ll come close to killing somebody. And it’s that fine edge—Why doesn’t he go all the way? I really liked the flawed heroes, the human heroes.”
Along with expanding outside the S.H.I.E.L.D. sphere of influence, this series will also kick off Netflix’s run of Marvel originals, with Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and The Defenders miniseries to eventually follow. DeKnight said the early stage of working with Netflix has been a great experience, and projects like House of Cards have shown they’re capable of producing shows that can rival even the best networks when it comes to quality.
He also touched on how long the series might actually run, considering they have four other shows in the offing to tie into. DeKnight said he knows about as much as we do at this point, and it seems they’re still ironing out exactly how everything will fit together to feed into Defenders:
“Netflix has been fantastic. They are phenomenally supportive of the creatives. How much freedom will I have? This is a bit of a different scenario because it’s a Marvel property. Once you have an IP like that, there are restrictions that you have to accept. I’m fine with that, I totally understand. I’ll push it as far as I can, of course, but I also respect the fact that this character has been around for decades. Overall I’ve been surprised at how willing everyone is to take a really fresh look and really push what we’re doing…
On this show, I honestly have no idea [how long it will run]. That’s so far above my pay grade. Making it even more complicated is the fact that [Daredevil] is one part of the bigger plan— Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and then The Defenders. How that all fits together, and whether or not there will be a second season of this show—or if it will fold into the others—are question nobody really has answers to yet.”
The series is tentatively slated to debut in May 2015, starring Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio and Rosario Dawson.
DRACULA UNTOLD
We've seen the trailer for Legendary and Universal's Dracula Untold and now the first clip has made its way online (via Metro).
Starring Luke Evans, Sarah Gadon, Diarmaid Murtagh, Dominic Cooper and Samantha Barks, Dracula Untold opens in 2D theaters and IMAX on October 10. Evans stars in the origin story of the man who became Dracula.
ANNABELLE
New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures have revealed the new TV spot for Annabelle, the horror thriller opening in theaters on October 3. Ttake a look at some of the film's new outdoor advertising spotted in the wild over at ShockTillYouDrop.com!
She terrified you in The Conjuring, but this is where it all began for Annabelle. Capable of unspeakable evil, the actual doll exists locked up in an occult museum in Connecticut - visited only by a priest who blesses her twice a month.
The supernatural thriller Annabelle begins before the evil was unleashed.
John Form has found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia - a beautiful, rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress. But Mia’s delight with Annabelle doesn't last long.
On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who violently attack the couple. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to the sinister conduit to the damned that is now... Annabelle.
GRIMM
Grimm calls them Wesen — German for “creature” — the mythology-inspired monsters hiding in plain sight on the NBC thriller, going into its fourth year of giving fans a reason to stay home Friday nights. This season picks up right where the May finale left off, with Nick (David Giuntoli) having lost his Wesen-spotting powers — which means he’ll have to lean on Trubel (Jacqueline Toboni) to function as his seeing-eye Grimm. Below, EW can exclusively reveal this quartet of new baddies that will haunt slayers Nick and Hank when Grimm returns for Friday, Oct. 24:
Gedächtnis Esser: Or what Syfy channel would call: “Manopus!” The part-man part-octopus Wesen has four tentacles that burrow into its victim’s head. If that weren’t lousy enough, the creature steals your memories and leaves you with dementia. “A lot of what we do is try to explain real-world problems, like in this case, identity theft,” says executive producer Jim Kouf. “Our best Wesen ideas come when we have an emotional core that explains something in life.”
Schinderdiv: “How do you explain people who are only out for themselves and do anything to achieve a goal?” asks executive producer David Greenwalt. If you answered, “A Schinderdiv!” then you are correct! This is your basic demon beast with long-bottom fangs (which must make shaving pretty difficult). This wesen is meant to embody ruthlessness and selfishness.
Heftigauroch: We’re starting to suspect all these names are actually German micro-brews, but Kouf says the Heftigauroch is actually a bull-like Wesen that morphs into rage when provoked. In the show, he’s a boxer who is very peaceful and doesn’t want to fight. Yet when pushed too far he becomes … yup, a raging bull. “When a bull is brought into a ring it doesn’t necessarily want a fight requires being hit with picadors to get mad — this Wesen requires the same treatment,” Kouf says.
Golem: The producers are cheating a little as the Golem is not a Wesen, but a creature from the Jewish religion. Made of clay and 10-feet high, he’s made to protect the meek but is dangerous to try to control. “The twist with our Golem is how it gets destroyed,” Kouf teases. Our bet: Industrial-sized pottery wheel.

THE BIG DRIVER

HUMANS
AMC is stepping in for Xbox.
AMC Backlash: Budget Squeezing, Producer "Bake-Offs" and Post-'Breaking Bad' Challenges
The cable network is near a deal to acquire domestic rights to the co-production drama series Humans, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. AMC declined comment.
Humans landed at Xbox with an eight-episode series commitment in April in a co-production deal with U.K. broadcaster Channel 4. The series, from British writing team Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (Spooks) is an English-language adaptation of Sveriges Television and Matador Film's acclaimed series Real Humans. U.K. indie production banner Kudos (Broadchurch) will produce the series, which was originally planned to share a premiere broadcast window on both the Xbox platform in North America and Channel 4 in the U.K. in 2015. Casting is said to already be underway.
Humans is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a "synth" — a highly developed robotic servant eerily similar to its live counterpart. In the hope of transforming the way they live, one strained suburban family purchases a refurbished synth only to discover that sharing life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences.
AMC's deal to step in for Xbox comes two months after Microsoft opted to shutter Xbox Entertainment Studios, its original programming studio. That left originals like Humans and the Steven Spielberg-produced live-action Halo series in the lurch. (Sources told THR in August that Xbox was shopping its entertainment studio, with Warner Bros. coming up as a potential home.)
For AMC, meanwhile, the deal to acquire Humans comes as the cable network has seen its latest original scripted programming struggle to break through the way that critical and ratings hits like The Walking Dead, Mad Men and Breaking Bad have. The network will not unspool any new original scripted series for the remainder of 2014. AMC's roster of originals currently includes martial arts drama Badlands (late 2015 or early 2016), the final seven episodes of Mad Men, Saturday staple Hell on Wheels and the sophomore runs of Halt & Catch Fire and Turn, as well as Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul and monster hit The Walking Dead.
On the pilot side, AMC is developing a Walking Dead companion series; Knifeman; Galyntine; White City; and comedy We Hate Paul Revere.

Seth Rogen, Melissa McCarthy, Rashida Jones, Matt Bomer, Bill Murray, Jennifer Coolidge and Octavia Spencer lend their voices to the June 5, 2015 release.
AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.
ABC and Marvel have a new, 30-second TV spot for the second season of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."
The "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." cast includes Clark Gregg as fan favorite Phil Coulson, along with Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Agent Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz and Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons.
The series is executive produced by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb. Season Two will premiere on September 23.
ANDRON
Alec Baldwin, who will soon be starring in Mission: Impossible 5, is set to join forces with Lethal Weapon's Danny Glover to headline Andron, a sci-fi action adventure movie from AMBI Pictures Group, the movie development, finance, production and distribution group owned and run by Andrea Iervolino and Lady Monika Bacardi.
The movie begins when a group of young men and women awake in a dark, claustrophobic maze. They don't remember who they are or how they got stuck in the black labyrinth of Andron. The group must learn to decipher codes, understand the signals, and beat the tests in this mysterious and bizarre place. Out of necessity they struggle to form a bond to survive, while the outside of the world watches and wages on their fate.
Baldwin and Glover will be supported by a cast that includes Michelle Ryan ("EastEnders," Cashback), Skin (lead singer from UK band Skunk Anansie), Jon Kortajarena (A Single Man), Gale Harold ("Queer as Folk") and Leo Howard (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Conan the Barbarian).
"The story of 'Andron' is enough to excite sci-fi fans worldwide but when you add actors like Alec Baldwin and Danny Glover, the meter rises even higher and audiences expect something very special, which is what we plan to deliver," says Iervolino. "We're very excited to add this film to our production slate and eager to get to work on a film we believe has great breakout potential."
Iervolino and Lady Bacardi are financing and producing the film and AMBI's international sales arm, AMBI Distribution, is handling worldwide sales.
Franceso Cinquemani wrote the screenplay and is directing the film, marking his feature directorial debut. Principal photography will commence this month in Malta, in collaboration with the Malta Film Commission, and in Italy.

TITANS COMING TO TNT?
TNT "Titans" go!
Cable network TNT is jumping on the superhero bandwagon as it nears a pilot order for "Titans," a comic book drama based on some superheroes in training, led by Dick Grayson as he becomes Nightwing, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The team of teen superheroes in the comics, originally referred to as the "Junior Justice League," included nearly a dozen different characters are various times. "Titans" will focus on Nightwing, Starfire, Raven and more, though no further names are specified. Possible additions include Aqualad, Cyborg, Kid Flash, Speedy, Superboy and Wonder Girl.
Shows based on DC and Marvel comics are beginning to dominate the television landscape, from "Arrow," "The Flash" and "Gotham" to "Agents of SHIELD," "Agent Carter" and "Daredevil." This latest offering will have Akiva Goldsman ("Fringe," "I Am Legend") and Marc Haimes ("The Legend of Zorro") as co-executive producers.
STAR WARS REBELS
"Star Wars: Episode VII" won't be in theaters until late 2015, but the first look at it may be coming sooner than you think. "Star Wars Rebels" is coming to Disney Channel and it turns out it has quite a few connections to the upcoming J.J. Abrams movie.
"Rebels" executive producer Simon Kinberg tells Entertainment Weekly, "It's a very integrated process, there's real communication between all the filmmakers because we're all part of a larger timeline. There is absolutely communication and integration between the different stories. We are very aware of what they're doing in 'VII,' and we also have to click into place with 'Episode IV'."
Kinberg, who also serves as a consultant on "Episode VII," isn't going into details about how the series will connect to the movie just yet. However, he reveals, "There are characters, vehicles, imagery that are introduced in the show before we've ever seen them in the movies, possibly including 'VII'."
"Star Wars Rebels" premieres Friday, Oct. 3, on Disney Channel. It then moved to Disney XD on Monday, Oct. 13.
UNDERWORLD
Theo James will be going back to Underworld.
The Divergent actor is attached as the lead in the fifth film in the vampire action franchise, which Lakeshore Entertainment is currently developing.
James, who played a vampire named David in 2013's Underworld: Awakening, will be the central character in the new film, which is not a reboot but rather an expansion of the existing universe. Sources say there was an option on James because of his work on the previous film, and he'll star opposite two new female characters. Casting is underway for those roles, with plans to start shooting in the spring.
Cory Goodman has been hired to write the script, as The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported. Lakeshore's Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi are producing.
James' star has risen significantly since he appeared in Underworld: Awakening because of his lead role in YA franchise Divergent. The film, starring James opposite Shailene Woodley, has earned $274.9 million worldwide. The sequel, Insurgent, recently wrapped shooting, and there are two more films — Allegiant Part 1 and Part 2 — in the franchise, which will all star James.
James also has wrapped work on two other projects: London Fields and Franny. He's repped by WME and Markham, Froggatt and Irwin in the U.K.
BEN-HUR REMAKE
MGM and Paramount's upcoming Timur Bekmambetov-directed remake of Ben-Hur has officially added its first cast member. Deadline reports that Morgan Freeman who, earlier this week, signed on for Seth MacFarlane's Ted 2, will play Ildarin, the man who trains Ben-Hur.
We learned last month that Tom Hiddleston was being eyed for the title role, but no official decision has, as of yet, been announced.
Set for release on February 26, 2016, the new take on Ben-Hur was originally scripted by Keith Clarke (The Way Back), with revisions by Academy Award-winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave). It is based on Lew Wallace's 1880 epic novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale of The Christ."
The film is said to return to the heart of the epic novel with a focus on the nature of faith. The story follows a falsely-accused nobleman who survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his best friend who betrayed him. Both must come to choose between retribution or forgiveness.
Producers include Mark Burnett, Sean Daniel and Joni Levin with Jason F. Brown, Keith Clarke, Roma Downey and John Ridley serving as executive producer.
NEW YORK COMIC CON

AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. NEWS
While we know Bobbi Morse/Mockingbird is joining our Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for season two, we haven't heard how or why, and what the longtime plans for the Marvel superheroine are, including her MCU crossover potential ... until now.
The reveal during San Diego Comic-Con that Mockingbird, played by former Wonder Woman Adrianne Palicki (G.I. JOE: Retaliation), would be a part of the show was one of the most exciting bits of news concerning the Marvel TV series.
In an interview with Comic Book Resources, showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen gave us an idea of what to expect of the comic-book character, including her big-screen crossover potential.
Tancharoen: Well, we're very excited to have the beloved character, Mockingbird, on the show. Adrianne Palicki was a perfect fit for the role. She was someone we pictured from the beginning. It's thrilling to have a nice, sort of skilled, sexy spy in the mix. And I think with the handful of characters that we have added to the show, it's just to illustrate what the new S.H.I.E.L.D. may look like. Coulson is operating with limited resources, so he has to bring people into the fold. So it may feel like we're expanding a lot, but really, the people that you will see are basically the people we have at our disposal.
Whedon: We used to be a ragtag group in a huge machine that was churning. Then, they were agents who had support. Now, that we have less, we sort of see all of them. So while our cast is getting bigger, it's actually because S.H.I.E.L.D. is getting smaller, we're using every resource we can.
When asked how exciting it was to get their hands on a Marvel character that could easily have gone to the Marvel Cinematic Universe instead of the TV one, here’s what Whedon and Tancharoen had to say:
Whedon: Well, obviously, we all exist in one universe, and if we didn't, we could have any character we wanted. We could kill them and do what we wanted with them. It is nice that we're all in one universe, so when we get something, it does have weight. It does exist in the Cinematic Universe and we're in constant communication with features, and there's a database of what they're using, what they plan to use, what we can and can't use. We just try to carve out our little spot, and Mockingbird's a good example of someone who we can really lean on as a major character.
Tancharoen: Right. And in the Marvel Universe everything is fluid. The show was basically born out of what has been already established in the Cinematic Universe, so as much as we have benefitted from having characters that you've seen in the film[s] appear on our show, there is always a possibility for the reverse. So we do think that all our characters have potential to crossover at some point and there's always that possibility, and Mockingbird is a nice, exciting new character for us to have that does have crossover potential.
BATMAN VS SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
Now this is a batmobile.
Zack Snyder has unleashed an official photo of the Caped Crusader's ride from the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The move comes after several spy photos from the set surfaced online. Let's just say, this one is decidedly more stylish.
Snyder previously teased the vehicle in May with a tweeted photo, and later in the first photo of Ben Affleck as the Dark Knight.
The follow-up to 2013's Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter and Scoot McNairy, and hits theaters on March 25, 2016.
RICHARK KIEL PASSES
Richard Kiel, the 7-foot-2 actor who played Jaws, the James Bond villain with the teeth of steel, died Wednesday. He was 74.
Kiel broke his leg last week and died in St. Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, Calif., according to several media reports.
Kiel's signature character appeared in the Bond films The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and Moonraker (1979). The actor also played an alien in the famed 1962 Twilight Zone episode "To Serve Man," a hitman in the Gene Wilder-Richard Pryor comedy Silver Streak (1976) and Adam Sandler's boss in the classic golf comedy Happy Gilmore (1996).
The Detroit native also stood tall as bad guys in such TV shows as The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Wild, Wild West and Kolchak: The Night Stalker and auditioned for the role as the mean green guy in the CBS series The Incredible Hulk, a role that went to Lou Ferrigno.
The Bond character of Jaws was inspired by author Ian Fleming’s description of a crook who went by the name of Horror and had steel-capped teeth in the 1962 novel The Spy Who Loved Me.
In the Spy Who Loved Me film — which was released two years after Steven Spielberg's Jaws — Kiel's invincible giant battles a shark in a shark tank, has a construction scaffold collapse on him and drives a car off a cliff into someone’s roof — and lives to tell about it, of course. For Moonraker, Jaws survives a fall from an airplane and a high-speed tramway crash. Both Bond films starred Roger Moore as 007.
“I had convinced the producer that Jaws should have some characteristics that were human to counteract the steel teeth. I guess I overdid it — I became too likable to kill off!” he said in a 2009 interview. “So they brought me back, and Moonraker was the most successful box office success for the Bond series for a long, long time.”
According to a special-edition DVD of The Spy Who Loved Me, Jaws’ chrome teeth were extremely uncomfortable and could only be worn for about 35 seconds at a time.
Kiel also appeared with his famous choppers alongside Harold Sakata as Oddjob during the Academy Awards in 1982 as Sheena Easton was performing her Oscar-nominated Bond song “For Your Eyes Only,” and he was a “Famous Big Guy With Silver Teeth” in the live-action feature Inspector Gadget (1999).
Jaws was spoofed in Mel Brooks’ High Anxiety (1977), which featured a hired killer named Braces (Rudy De Luca).
Kiel worked as a nightclub bouncer and cemetery plot salesman before landing his first acting gig as a character called Bare Knuckles in the NBC series Klondike.
He later could be spotted (gosh, he was impossible to miss) in the films The Nutty Professor (1963), The Longest Yard (1974) with Burt Reynolds, Force 10 From Navarone (1978), Cannonball Run II (1984), Pale Rider (1985) with Clint Eastwood and Think Big (1989), and he most recently had a voice role in Tangled (2010).
Kiel had a regular role as Moose Moran in the 1975-76 ABC series Barbary Coast and appeared in guest spots on The Rifleman, Lassie, Honey West, The Monkees, I Spy, It Takes a Thief and Simon & Simon during a career that spanned more than 50 years.
THE WALKING DEAD
AMC has released a new featurette that explores the impressive zombie stuntwork being utilized for the upcoming fifth season of their hit series, "The Walking Dead."
Based on the comic created by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard, Season Five of “The Walking Dead” premieres Sunday, October 12 at 9:00pm ET/PT. It stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Chad Coleman, Chandler Riggs, Melissa McBride, Emily Kinney, Danai Gurira and Sonequa Martin-Green.

ONCE UPON A TIME
"Once Upon a Time" will expand its family to include the characters of "Frozen" this fall, but that doesn't mean everyone is getting along.
"She needs to be removed," Regina says ominously in the new trailer before we see an image of The Mirror -- played by "Breaking Bad" alum Giancarlo Esposito. New photos from the Season 4 premiere show Esposito also back as Sid, Regina's right-hand detective in the Storybrooke side of things as well.
The question remains who Regina is trying to get rid of because the suspect list is a decent size. Will she feel threatened by Elsa as queen? Is she trying to get rid of Marian so she can have Robin Hood back? Or maybe she's gone back to her original plan of getting rid of Emma since all she's done is ruin Regina's life since she's gotten to Storybrooke?
The trailer also shows us a bit more of Anna and Elsa as they make their way to the magical town. Of course, "OUAT" favorites Hook, Bell, Snow White and more all make an appearance as well.
"Once Upon a Time" returns for Season 4 on Sept. 28 on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
THE THINGS THEY LEFT BEHIND
Greg Berlanti is a busy man -- the producer, who has "The Flash" debuting on "The CW" in October in addition to several other projects in the development pipeline -- has added another gig to his resume. He is adapting the Stephen King short story "The Things They Left Behind" into a pilot for CBS.
According to Deadline, the network was the highest bidder for the supernatural procedural, written by Seth Grahame-Smith and following two investigators who help complete the unfinished business of the dead.
King's short story is set in the aftermath of 9/11 and was originally published in 2003. CBS's successful summer series "Under the Dome" is based on a King novel.
NEW ANGELES
Two sci-fi heavies are teaming up for a new television series that sounds a lot like the Matrix, and they’ve even brought Keanu Reeves along for the ride.
Dubbed New Angeles, the series will be directed by Roland Emmerich (Stargate, Independence Day) and produced by Reeves, who of course starred in the Matrix trilogy. The pilot will be written and executive-produced by veteran comic-book writer Gregg Hurwitz (Batman: The Dark Knight). The project is being developed by David Ellender’s Slingshot Global Media.
According to Deadline, the show itself is set in the future and will “follow a young man who escapes the mundane reality of his life by entering an exciting virtual reality world called New Angeles. Once down the rabbit hole, he adopts a new identity, becoming the man he was always destined to be, and in the process, unlocks the keys to a mystery that has real-world consequences for him and his family.” Hmm, that synopsis sound familiar at all?
Here’s what the folks behind the project had to say about it:
Ellender: “We’re thrilled to have Roland and Keanu on board for a project of this magnitude. Roland’s masterful vision for this is extraordinary and Keanu’s action work behind and in front of the camera speaks for itself.”
Emmerich: “Gregg is an incredibly imaginative writer, and I’m looking forward to bringing his ideas for the show to life. It’s exciting to get the opportunity bring a massive project like this to the small screen within a rapidly changing television space.”
The plan is to apparently shop New Angeles around to networks, cable and on-demand services (i.e. Netflix, Amazon, etc.). Emmerich will reportedly direct the pilot, which is a big get, considering he is an accomplished film director with a fair share of blockbusters on his resume.
As for Reeves, he's been dabbling with directing and producing in recent years, and a project like this should be a comfortable fit considering his extensive experience in the genre.
MINORITY REPORT
A TV series based on Minority Report is going to get a pilot ... but there will be at least one major change from the movie.
The news broke last month that Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television was developing a TV show based on his 2002 movie version of Philip K. Dick's story "The Minority Report," and now the proposed show has been picked up by Fox as a "put pilot," meaning the pilot has to air or else a financial penalty must be paid by the network.
The show will be written by Max Borenstein (Godzilla), and Deadline reports that one major alteration from the movie is that the lead role, a detective "haunted by her past," will be female (Tom Cruise, of course, was the lead in the movie). The show will be set 10 years after the movie and will follow the lead character as she tries to help a former Precog find a new purpose for his ability to see the future after the collapse of the Precrime division in Washington D.C.
A woman in the lead role (an area where TV continues to blow away the movies) could certainly give a fresh perspective to the story and distinguish the series from the movie. There's no word yet on who could land the role, but I would not be surprised to see a name actress nab it, in the same way that Halle Berry is starring in another Spielberg show, Extant.
While it's still not a foregone conclusion that Minority Report will become a full-fledged series, it seems almost certain that we'll get a chance to see what it could look like.

THE FLASH
The CW has released a new promo for the upcoming series "The Flash" which not only features some new footage from the series but also interviews with cast members Carlos Valdes and Danielle Panabaker discussing their characters. In addition, the promo does provide a bit of a teaser for some of the other heroes that will appear in the series such as Valdes' Cisco Ramon, AKA Vibe, and Robbie Amell's Ronnie Raymond (the fiance to Panabaker's Caitlin Snow), who is one half of the hero Firestorm.
"The Flash" arrives from co-creators Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, who, along with Geoff Johns, wrote the pilot episode which was helmed by “Arrow” pilot director David Nutter. HAVEN
Season premiere Thursday! - Over the last two years or so, the landscape of Syfy's original scripted shows has been shifting. It started slowly, with the arrival of Defiance and the impending end of Warehouse 13, then seemed to escalate with the loss of Being Human, the start of Helix, and the impending launches of new series ranging from Z Nation to 12 Monkeys. Sure, imports like Continuum and Lost Girl are still around for the moment, but in many ways Haven is the last of the old guard, the only Syfy original drama from the Eureka era that's still standing, and for a while last year we weren't sure it would make it this far. Season four of the series was the only season so far without a single episode to hit the 2-million-viewer mark (in Live+Same Day), and while that's certainly not a sign that a show is dead, Haven's numbers did seem to be trending down a bit last year. When the season-four finale came and went without renewal news, fans worried, but Syfy eventually delivered, announcing a fifth season in January 2014 that, at 26 episodes, will be the series' biggest to date. This week season five is finally here, and it'll take us all the way into 2015. Whether this will be Haven's curtain call remains to be seen, but for now, let's just enjoy what's next. In the premiere, Nathan and Duke struggle to cope with the loss of Audrey, who's still in Mara's grip.
Z NATION
Series premiere! - We've talked before about Syfy's ambitious plans to bring a whole new slate of scripted series with harder genre edges to our screens, and Z Nation is the latest part of that push. It might seem foolish to roll out another zombie series on television while The Walking Dead is still out there infecting pop culture and devouring its competition with ratings record after ratings record, but Z Nation is poised to set itself apart right out of the gate. While the chief objective for Walking Dead's cast of characters is usually to just keep clinging to survival, Z Nation's central plot could end up saving the human race. Set three years after a zombie outbreak has devastated the world, Z Nation follows a small band of heroes with a very specific mission: Get the one man in the world who survived a zombie bite (Keith Allan) from New York to California -- across a zombie-infested American wasteland -- where the last viral lab still in operation waits to test his blood. If they succeed, a vaccine could be developed to stop the zombies, but the man who could be harboring the cure has a secret that could bring down the entire team. With a cast that includes Harold Perrineau (Lost), Tom Everett Scott (Beauty and the Beast) and DJ Qualls (Legit), Z Nation seems set to deliver an entertaining, different kind of zombie show. Of course, whether it can emerge from The Walking Dead's shadow remains to be seen. In the series premiere, the team comes together and begins its journey.
WITCHES OF EAST END
Witches of East End is now past the midpoint of its second season, so it feels like a good time to check in and see how it's doing with its sophomore effort. The first season of the show was a solid hit for Lifetime, earning nearly 2 million Live+Same Day viewers with its series premiere and bottoming out at 1.40 million Live+Same Day viewers. That was all good enough to earn it a renewal, but this season things have slipped a bit. The season-two premiere of the series hit just 1.12 million viewers, and last month the show dipped below 1 million for the first time. The season high so far is 1.50 million viewers in Live + Same Day, which isn't bad, and none of these numbers mean Witches is going away after season two. The show's first season is now on Netflix Watch Instantly, where it'll likely earn some new fans, and it's also important to note that the numbers cited here don't include DVR viewing. Witches of East End is slipping, no question, but what we don't know is whether it's slipped enough for Lifetime to lose faith in it. With five episodes to go until the season finale, it's still got a chance to impress. This week, Joanna takes action to protect her family.
THE FLASH NEWS
During The Flash’s PaleyFest panel over the weekend, the showrunners for The CW’s upcoming freshman superhero series revealed their hopes of bringing another iconic speedster into the mix.
That other speedster? Another Flash. That other Flash? Wally West.
Not only that, but the showrunners have confirmed that he’d be African-American, just as in The New 52.
Here's what Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg, executive producers on the Arrow spinoff, told the audience:
Greg Berlanti said, “We made [the] Wests African-American so that we could head in that direction.” Then Kreisberg added, “When DC reintroduced Wally [in the New 52], he was African-American.”
Before the massive reboot to the DC Universe that took place back in 2011, Wally West had been a founding members of the Teen Titans alongside Batman's Dick Grayson. He would later take over Barry Allen’s place as the Flash when Allen died during the 1985-86 miniseries event Crisis on Infinite Earth.
However, when the character Wally West was re-introduced in New 52 (in The Flash #30, specifically), he was now a young African-American who had a new “street” backstory.
AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.
The official synopsis for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s season-two premiere episode, titled “Shadows,” has been released, revealing that a certain fan-fave Marvel Cinematic Universe character will make an unexpected appearance.
Marvel’s just officially published said synopsis for “Shadows,” which sees the return of Coulson (Clark Gregg) — now the new director of S.H.I.E.L.D. — and his team. They’re obviously still fighting the good fight in the wake of the devastating events that transpired in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and in the season-one finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The short version of it? Hail Hydra!
If you look closely at the cast listed at the end of the synopsis, you’ll see a familiar MCU name.
Here it is:
“Shadows” - Coulson and his team are now wanted fugitives with limited resources--but that's not stopping them from keeping the world safe from powerful and unseen threats everywhere. However, with new members they hardly know, will S.H.I.E.L.D. ever be trusted again? Watch “Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” on the ABC Television Network.
“Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” stars Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, Ming-Na Wen as Agent Melinda May, Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, Chloe Bennet as Skye, Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Jemma Simmons and Nick Blood as Lance Hunter.
Guest starring are B.J. Britt as Agent Antoine Triplett, Nick Blood as Agent Lance Hunter, Adrian Pasdar as Brigadier General Glenn Talbot, Henry Simmons as Alphonso "Mack" Mackenzie, Patton Oswalt as Agent Billy Koenig, Lucy Lawless as Isabelle "Izzy" Hartley, Wilmer Calderon as Idaho, Reed Diamond as Daniel Whitehall, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, Brian Patrick Wade as Carl Creel, Matthew Glave as Roger Browning, Simon Kassianides as Sunil Bakshi, George Stephanopoulos as self, Raquel Gardner as Carla Talbot, Ben Turner Nixon as Hydra Officer, Franco Vega as Military Leader, Rich Ceraulo as Soldier #1, and JB Tadena as Private Tilden.
So there you have it: Hayley Atwell will reprise her role as Peggy Carter and will thus make her very first Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. appearance in the upcoming season-two premiere. Which, when you think about it, may not be THAT surprising, since the actress will soon start filming on her own series, Marvel’s Agent Carter.
The synopsis also confirms the return of B.J. Britt as Agent Triplett, as well as the first appearance of other fan fave Lucy Lawless in the role of Isabelle “Izzy” Hartley.
Are you guys excited to see Peggy Carter will have a role in the season-two premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? In which capacity do you think she will appear? As a short flashback cameo? Or do you believe she may have a bigger part to play in the episode?
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return on Sept. 23 on ABC.
TERMINATOR
Mark your calendars, because we're officially set for another Terminator trilogy ... unless something goes wrong.
Back in 2009, Terminator Salvation hit theaters and, despite a cold critical reception, delivered enough blockbuster bang to launch a planned trilogy of films about John Connor and his band of freedom fighters. Those plans fell apart, though, when producers and rights-owners The Halcyon Company fell into bankruptcy and the Terminator rights were up for grabs. Now it's Paramount Pictures' turn to try and relaunch this franchise with multiple films, and though we're nearly a year away from the first film's release, the studio's already reserving release dates for two more installments.
Paramount announced late Friday that, after the July 1, 2015, release of Terminator Genisys, a second Terminator installment will follow on May 19, 2017, and a third will hit June 29, 2018. The Hollywood Reporter cites "insiders" who said the second and third films will shoot back to back, but also noted that this plan hinges on the success of Genisys. If the first Terminator film in five years doesn't have what it takes, another planned trilogy could be ... well, terminated.
Genisys has a lot going for it, though. It will feature the (hopefully triumphant) return of Arnold Schwarzenegger as an aged version of his T-800, its plot will reportedly weave back into the very first Terminator film, and it features strong new choices for Sarah and John Connor in Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes star Jason Clarke, respectively. Plus, Game of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor is at the helm of it all.
DOCTOR WHO
"Doctor Who" is back in full swing with Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman starring in the series' eighth season (or 34th, to longtime fans) and the show has today revealed the season's fourth episode, "Listen". The trailer debuted after this past Saturday's "Robot of Sherwood."
"Listen" explores what happens when ghosts of past and future crowd into the lives of the Doctor and Clara, throwing the pair into an adventure that takes them to the very end of the universe.
"What happens when the Doctor is alone?" the official synopsis asks. "And what scares the grand old man of Time and Space? Listen!"

BATMAN'S ROBIN
If things had turned out a little differently at DC Comics in the 1980s, Batman's third sidekick would've been a former nemesis.
Life was rough for Batman in 1988 and 1989. The second Robin, Jason Todd, was brutally murdered by the Joker during the story arc A Death in the Family, and the death weighed heavily on Batman. Despite his grief and anger, though, he still had a city to protect, and among the threats waiting for him in Gotham City was a new villain called Anarky. The creation of Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle, Anarky first menaced the Dark Knight in the fall of 1989, in the pages of Detective Comics #608.
One issue later, Batman discovered that the man behind the Anarky mask was really just a boy: 12-year-old prodigy Lonnie Machin, a brilliant young man with a fierce belief in radical philosophy who was driven to punish the corrupt and unjust through often excessively violent means. Anarky's vigilante methods put him at odds with Batman, but even as he fought to bring young Lonnie to justice, the Caped Crusader admitted that he couldn't completely disagree with the kid.
So, we've got a young man skilled at fighting evil (even if he doesn't do it in the most delicate way), with a brilliant mind and an ideology that Batman can at least have some respect for. Then we've got this image of Jason Todd woven into a discussion about Anarky between Batman and Commissioner Gordon.
It turns out that, while it might not have been part of DC's larger plan at the time, Alan Grant was sowing the seeds of a future team-up between Batman and Lonnie Machin, and hoped to eventually make him into the third Robin. So why didn't it happen? Well, it turns out that editor Denny O'Neil and writer Marv Wolfman were already sowing the seeds of a new Robin over in the pages of Batman. Grant later confirmed this in an interview with Italian fan site DC Leaguers.
"I had originally hoped, when I wrote the first Anarky story, that Anarky would eventually end up as the new Robin. But, unknown to me, Denny was already working in secret with Marv Wolfman to create Tim Drake."
By the end of 1990, Tim Drake was in a new costume and fighting alongside Batman as Robin, a role he would hold for the next two decades. As for Anarky, he never got a high-profile place in the Batman family, but he's still hanging around the DC Universe today.
LEGO
Between the awesome LEGO Movie and never-ending array of special sets, it seems like LEGOs are everywhere these days. Apparently there’s a good reason for that.
For the first half of 2014, LEGO surpassed Mattel in sales revenue for the first time ever, effectively making the company the biggest toy manufacturer on the planet. Yes, that means those little bricks and yellow-faced mini figs have surpassed the house that Hot Wheels and Barbie built.
In 2013, LEGO passed former No. 2 toy company Hasbro, and it seems LEGOs have now proven much more popular than Hasbro stalwarts like Transformers, My Little Pony and board games like Monopoly and Clue. Impressive.
What’s most amazing about the accomplishment is that LEGO essentially does just one thing — make LEGOs. Unlike Mattel and other toy firms, LEGO is hyper-focused in one market. While other companies diversify into several different areas (i.e. race cars and dolls), LEGO has poured its resources into making its niche a full-on market unto itself. And it’s worked.
By cutting licensing deals with every brand from Marvel to Star Wars to the Ninja Turtles and the Simpsons, LEGO has managed to pull more and more kids into playing with the company’s toy niche. It was a risky move all those years ago, but as this latest accomplishment has shown, it’s a strategy that’s definitely paying off.

WALKING DEAD NEWS
Get your survival kits ready and start scrounging for food — The Walking Dead’s TV universe is officially getting bigger.
In a move that surprises absolutely no one, AMC has officially placed a pilot order for that Walking Dead spinoff series that has been in development since last year. Nothing is known about the plot other than the fact that it won’t be set in Georgia like the main series, and that hasn’t really changed.
But AMC President Charlie Collier did offer a few tantalizing hints about the project, noting that one goal of the pilot is to offer fans a look at what’s happening in other parts of the world:
“Almost from the beginning of The Walking Dead on AMC, fans have been curious about what is going on in the zombie apocalypse in other parts of the world. In fact, beyond requests for zombie cameos, it’s the question I get asked the most. Obviously, we all take our stewardship of the original franchise incredibly seriously and we, along with Robert, Gale, David and now Dave, are all proceeding with extreme care in order to ensure that we are offering fans something truly compelling, engaging and distinct. We’re thrilled to be taking this next step with these remarkable partners.”
The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, along with producers Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert, are all contributing behind the scenes to bring the spinoff series to life. The network has also hired Dave Erickson (Sons of Anarchy) to serve as showrunner. Ericsson and Kirkman teamed up to write the pilot script, which Entertainment Weekly notes “really impressed” the AMC higher-ups.
As for Kirkman, he’s made the act of being cryptic an absolute art over the past few years, and dropped this shadowy comment about the status of development for the pilot:
“There are many corners of The Walking Dead universe that remain unseen in the shadows. Being given the opportunity to shine a light into those corners and see what lurks out there is an absolute thrill. I know the fans are anxious to hear what Dave and I have been cooking up for this new universe of The Walking Dead, and I’m happy to be one step closer to sharing it with them.”
The new season of The Walking Dead is set to premiere Oct. 12, and the spinoff will likely arrive at some point next year, assuming AMC picks it up. Considering the network practically prints money with the zombie franchise, we think it’s a safe bet we’ll see a lot more from this mystery project next year.

GOOD OMENS
Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s fantasy novel Good Omens will finally get a well-deserved adaptation. But there’s a tiny catch.
The geektastic collaboration between two fantasy greats left a strong impression on fans everywhere, establishing Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch as something of a cult favorite and sparking questions as to when, if ever, we might get to see it in another form. So what’s the catch about this adaptation?
It seems Good Omens is NOT going to be adapted for TV or film ... but for radio.
The six-part audio series, which will air on Radio 4, will feature talents from cult TV shows including Sherlock, Merlin, Game of Thrones, Being Human, Shaun of the Dead, Spaced and Peep Show. It's in the very capable hands of Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (the BBC4 radio adaptation, not the 2005 movie) director Dirk Maggs, who also dramatized Gaiman’s novel Neverwhere, featuring a stellar cast including Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy and Natalie Dormer, to critical acclaim.
Mark Heap and Peter Serafinowicz will take centre stage as the angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley respectively. Other actors on board the Radio 4 adaptation include Colin Morgan, Louise Brealey, Clive Russell, Julia Deakin, Simon Jones, Arsher Ali, Phil Davis and Mark Benton. Gaiman and Pratchett will also make cameo appearances.
Good Omens basically tells the story of a fast-approaching apocalypse and the unlikely duo of Aziraphale and Crowley, who are keen to prevent it by killing the Antichrist. But unfortunately, they seem to have mislaid him.
Released in 1990, Good Omens was listed among the BBC’s Big Read Nation’s 100 favorite books, and this is the first time the story has been dramatized, with Maggs adapting the novel with the help of Gaiman.
Good Omens is scheduled to air in December. It will broadcast across a week in five half-hour episodes, culminating in an hourlong final apocalyptic showdown in time for Christmas.
Radio 4 boss Gwyneth Williams said of the project: “I’m delighted to have Neil Gaiman back on Radio 4 -- and this time with Terry Pratchett. I can’t wait to hear what they will do with the apocalypse. The Radio 4 audience loved Neverwhere and Good Omens will be a splendid Christmas treat.”

DOCTOR WHO ISSUE #2
A preview of the second issue of Titan Comics' "Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor" has arrived. In the pages, which you can see below, the Doctor attempts to take his new companion Alice on an adventure. Unfortunately, he doesn't like the outcome.
The issue is written by Al Ewing, with art by Simon Fraser. "Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor" number two is in stores Wednesday, Sept. 10.
CONSTANTINE
"Constantine" is adding a character DC comic book fans know very well. "In The Flesh" star Emmett Scanlan has been cast as New Orleans detective Jim Corrigan in a recurring guest role.
IGN is reporting the news, adding that Corrigan would become immersed in John Constantine's supernatural world and be willing to do anything to bring evil to justice. In the comics, Corrigan is eventually murdered and with his avenging spirit returns to Earth as The Spectre.
There's no word on when Corrigan will first appear on the series. "Constantine" premieres Friday, Oct. 24, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
THE FLASH
The marketing blitz for Arrow and its spinoff series The Flash is ramping up, and now The CW has released two excellent new trailers to promo the DC superhero projects.
The Flash trailer works more to set the tone of the new Arrow spinoff, focusing on the setup of young Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and his character. We get to see more of his mother’s mysterious, super speed-related death, plus some nice shots of Gustin getting used to his powers and embracing his inner hero. We’ve seen the pilot, and it’s well worth a watch.
Flash premieres Oct. 7, while Arrow returns Oct. 8, to The CW.

SUPERGIRL
Supergirl is getting a chance to fly.
Deadline reports the DC Comics character will be the center of a new TV show to be produced by "Arrow" and "The Flash" co-creator and executive producer Greg Berlanti.
The series, currently being developed by Warner Bros. TV, is being described as a fresh take on the character of Supergirl a.k.a. Kara Zor-El and her story. Berlanti will executive producer with Ali Adler, who he worked with on ABC's canceled superhero drama, "No Ordinary Family." Adler will pen the script for the potential new tale. No actors are mentioned as being currently attached.
Female-centric superhero shows are looking to be the trend in the coming year, with Marvel's "Agent Carter" coming to ABC and the "Jessica Jones" series in pre-production for Netflix -- and perhaps there is still hope for "Wonder Woman" to be reinvented for current TV.
ARROW NEWS
After name-dropping him for nearly a season, Arrow's finally ready to introduce Ra's Al Ghul. He's the infamous villain who's been hovering like a dark cloud over the show, the leader of the League of Assassins, and Nyssa Al Ghul's father. If you think she was bad, you haven't seen nothing yet.
Thursday, Arrow star Stephen Amell announced on Twitter that the role had been cast with Australian actor, Matt Nable. He previously starred as Boss Johns opposite Vin Diesel in last year's Riddick. Nable has big shoes to fill considering his character's reputation. He's such a threat that the mention of his name had Malcolm Merlyn shaking in his boots. And that's saying something, because Malcolm's a sociopath!
SHADOW OF COLOSSUS
It’s been a long road, but the influential videogame Shadow of the Colossus is finally coming to the big screen — and here’s who has been tasked to make it happen.
Deadline reports that Argentine filmmaker Andrés Muschietti (Mama) has signed on to direct the game-to-film adaptation for Sony Pictures, overseeing a script penned by Hanna writer Seth Lochhead. The 2005 game followed a young man tasked with killing 16 massive colossi to bring back his dead lover, and is often cited as one of the most influential games of the modern era.
Despite being nearly a decade old, Shadow of the Colossus still has a ton of fans — and recently warranted an HD upgrade and rerelease in 2011 for the Playstation 3. It’s artistic, ambitious, puzzling and a heck of a lot of fun. Following its release, the game raked in several awards, ranging from innovative design to artistic design and even game of the year.
It also has a storied film history, with studio deals in place since 2009 trying to bring the game to life. Josh Trank (Chronicle) was even attached to direct at one point, before heading over to the Fantastic Four. Kevin Misher (The Scorpion King, Carrie) has been championing the project for years, and remains attached as a producer.
The game was also a key component of Mike Binder’s 2007 drama film Reign Over Me, which starred Adam Sandler as a man who lost his wife and child in the collapse of the Twin Towers. Sandler’s character plays Shadow of the Colossus in the game in an effort to cope with the loss, and identifies with the theme of resurrection present in the game. The inclusion remains one of the better efforts to actually include and reference games in films intelligently.
ONCE UPON A TIME
Frozen's Elsa, Anna and Co. are headed to Storybrooke in a new Once Upon a Time teaser.
Days after The Hollywood Reporter debuted the first season-four promo that hints at Elsa's chilly debut, a 30-second spot — this time featuring actual footage — uncovers more about the Sept. 28 premiere.
Last viewers saw Elsa in the season-three finale, the Disney princess was making her way to town. And when she discovers that she's been dropped in to the town known as Storybrooke, Elsa is understandably confused. Add Emma to the mix too: "Frozen?" she asks.
There are even brief glimpses of Anna, Kristoff and his reindeer, Sven, in addition to an eventful dance between Rumple and Belle.
Comic Con attendees in July were treated to a special first look from the premiere that featured Elsa and Anna at their parents' grave site as they prepare for Anna's wedding to Kristoff.
Once Upon a Time premieres Sept. 28 on ABC.
MORE ARROW NEWS
A new 90-second Arrow trailer debuted on Thursday and it opens with Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) making the move on his trusted tech whiz Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards). While in the middle of another high-speed chase in Starling City, Oliver doesn't waste a second in asking Felicity out on that date.
"Do you like Italian?" he asks innocently while racing through an abandoned backstreet on his bike. "Oliver, you're in the middle of a high-speed chase," Felicity says, slightly taken aback. Oliver's response? "I'm multitasking." In another moment, Oliver — lightening up a little — takes an early leave after some late-night crime-fighting only to have Quentin Lance (Paul Blackthorne) drop in this gem: "Do you have a hot date or something?"
As the trailer — set to Death From Above 1979's "Trainwreck 1979" — suggests, it's a new day in Starling City in season three. Diggle (David Ramsey) puts it best when he says there are two types of criminals left in town — "the ones we put away and the ones that are running scared."
Also spotlighted is Ray Palmer's (Brandon Routh) introduction ("I parked on your roof, hope that's OK? … You guys valet, right?") and Sara Lance's (Caity Lotz) return.
It ends with Oliver telling Felicity on their date that there are "still things you don't know about me." Cut to an intense gunfight alongside Roy Harper (Colton Haynes), who has a look of shock following some impressive kills by Oliver. "I never said I didn't know how to use a gun." Oh, semantics.
As executive producer Marc Guggenheim told The Hollywood Reporter in July, season three follows the theme of identity. "It's the first season where this theme of identity is not only about Oliver but is also about all the other characters," he said.
Arrow returns Oct. 8 on The CW.

THE FLASH
Dominic Purcell (Prison Break) is the latest addition to the cast of The Flash.
Purcell will play Mick Rory, a pyromaniac who finds an outlet for his obsession with fire when he teams up with Leonard Snart/Captain Cold (Miller) and becomes the villain known as Heatwave.
Purcell will first appear in episode 4 of the comic-book based series.
DRACULA UNTOLD
A new international trailer for Dracula Untold have been unleashed, featuring a bat-flurry of brand-new, exciting footage.
The upcoming movie from Universal Pictures sees Luke Evans (Bard the Bowman in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Hobbit: The Battle of FIve Armies) in the role of Vlad Tepes (or Vlad the Impaler, to his friends), the ruthless Wallachian leader who would later be known the world over -- thanks to Bram Stoker -- as Count Dracula.
Directed by Gary Shore, Dracula Untold takes on the origin story of the most famous vampire of all time, by putting a mythical (and magical) spin on the very real man.
Here's a short blurb:
Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6, Immortals) stars in Dracula Untold, the origin story of the man who became Dracula. Gary Shore directs and Michael De Luca produces the epic action-adventure that co-stars Sarah Gadon, Dominic Cooper, Diarmaid Murtagh and Samantha Barks.
Dracula Untold will be unleashed in theatres on Oct. 17, 2014, in the U.S. and Oct. 3 in the U.K., just in time for Halloween.
CHILDHOOD'S END
It’s been more than a year since we heard anything about Syfy’s potential Arthur C. Clarke adaptation Childhood’s End, but the network has finally given it a green light.
The six-hour miniseries adaptation was first put into development along with a crush of new projects early last year, and the studio has now pulled the trigger. The project will be produced by Michael De Luca (The Social Network) and Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind).
An interesting bit? It’ll be directed by Doctor Who alum Nick Hurran, and penned by Who writer Matthew Graham. They obviously already have some experience dealing with aliens, so this tale of a peaceful alien invasion that essentially turns the world into a near-utopia should be right up their alley.
Clarke published Childhood’s End in 1953, and the ambitious novel tells the story of alien Overlords who come to rule the Earth and end all war, but everything is not exactly as it seems. Their arrival sets off a whole new series of events that could eventually cost us the planet we call home.
Syfy president Dave Howe had this to say about the series to The Hollywood Reporter, which offers some hints about which direction they'll be taking the story:
“As we aggressively develop scripted programming over a diverse creative landscape, we want our content to reflect the greatest sci-fi stories from the past and the present. The powerful themes of Childhood’s End, from the fearsome price of peace and prosperity, to the very question of what constitutes a human being, remain fascinating and timeless. This will be the most ambitious project for Syfy in many years.”
Assuming Syfy manages to bring the book to the small screen, they’ll have succeeded where many have failed. Legendary director Stanley Kubrick tried to make it in the 1960s but couldn’t get the rights, and a version by Abraham Polonsky never made it out of the scripting phase. As late as 2002 Universal was kicking it around, with Kimberly Peirce attached to direct at the time.
There’s no specific timeline for when the series might arrive, but we’d think mid-to-late 2015 at the earliest.
HANSEL
Producer Juliet Blake ("The Hundred-Foot Journey") is set to develop a live-action "Hansel and Gretel" movie after her Four Chickens for a Fiver banner acquired feature film rights to Neil Gaiman's upcoming graphic novel about the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale.
The story is "Stardust" and "Coraline" author Gaiman's take on the fairytale about a brother and sister threatened by a witch living in a candy house.
He says: "For me, retelling Hansel and Gretel was a way of telling an old tale in a way that made it immediate and true, and about us, now. It reminds us of how paper thin civilization really is. It’s about hunger, and about families. I’m thrilledand delighted to be working with Juliet Blake to bring Hansel and Gretel to the world again, and to show people how much this story has to say to us."
Gaiman’s book, illustrated by Lorenzo Mattotti, will be released in October.

Z NATION
Aside from that all-too-brief teaser clip we saw a while back, Syfy hasn’t released a whole lot of footage from the upcoming zombie series Z Nation. Until now.
Ahead of the series’ Sept. 12 debut, the network has released an extended trailer via a free “Sneak Peek” over at Amazon. It shows off quite a bit of new footage, and honestly looks much more solid than the brief teaser trailer indicated.
The effects and cinematography look decent, and it definitely has a Walking Dead vibe around the edges — but the series feels a bit brighter and more hopeful, as opposed to just the all-out darkness we know and love in AMC’s horror series. There also seems to be a driving story arc quickly established in the pilot.
As Walking Dead has proven, viewers love to watch zombies. But that show has succeeded because it’s good, not just because it features insane gore and undead craziness. Here’s hoping Z Nation producer Karl Schaefer (Eureka) has this one on the right track. If nothing else, the new footage definitely has our curiosity piqued.
They’ve also assembled a cast that features some familiar faces for genre fans, including Harold Perrineau (Lost), DJ Qualls (Supernatural) and Tom Everett Scott (Southland, Beauty and the Beast). Qualls positively steals the show every time he pops up in Supernatural, so we’re glad to see him get a meaty genre role here.
THE MAGICIANS
The folks at Syfy are bringing in an acclaimed film director to help kick off the ambitious new series The Magicians, and we’re psyched to see what he does with the franchise.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has tapped Mike Cahill (Another Earth, I, Origins) to helm the pilot of The Magicians, which is based on Lev Grossman's best-selling supernatural book series of the same name.
The series will focus on two 20-somethings who, “while studying magic in New York, discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as kids is real and poses grave danger to humanity.” The script is being written by Sera Gamble (Supernatural) and John McNamara (Prime Suspect).
If you’re unfamiliar with Cahill, it’s understandable, since most of his accolades have come a bit deeper on the indie side of things. He wrote and directed the buzzy 2011 Sundance film Another Earth, plus the feature I, Origins. Both of those efforts were awarded the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize, given to films focusing on science or technology, at Sundance.
Syfy’s EVP of original content, Bill McGoldrick, noted they were “impressed” with Cahill’s work in the feature film world, adding that the network is “very excited” to have him on board to bring The Magicians to life. Cahill has created some of the most visually interesting sci-fi flicks in recent memory, so we can’t wait to see Grossman's books translated through that lens.
Production on the pilot is set to ramp up later this year. With Cahill at the helm, we’re excited to see how it turns out.
MONSTERS DARK CONTINENT - GOLIATH
Vertigo Films has released a brand-new U.K. trailer for the eagerly anticipated sequel to Gareth Edward’s Monsters flick, Monsters: Dark Continent.
If you were itching to finally see some new footage from this upcoming horror/sci-fi film, then you’re in luck, because there’s plenty more to look at in this new, longer trailer (the last trailer we showed you back in May was just a tad over a minute long).
We don't know about you, but it's giving us a mighty case of Black Hawk Down meets Aliens vibe, which is very different from the tone of its predecessor.
Here's a blurb for the film:
Seven years on from the events of Monsters, and the ‘Infected Zones’ have spread worldwide. Humans have been knocked off the top of the food chain, with disparate communities struggling for survival. American soldiers are being sent abroad to protect US interests from the Monsters, but the war is far from being won. Noah, a haunted soldier with several tours under his belt, is sent on a mission: an American soldier has gone rogue deep in the Infected Zone, and Noah must reach him and take him out. But when Noah's unit and transport are destroyed, he finds himself with only a young and inexperienced cadet for company - the brother of the man Noah has been sent to kill. The two soldiers must go on a life-altering journey through the dark heart of monster territory, accompanied by a young local woman to guide them. By the time the three of them reach their goal, they will have been forced to confront the fear that the true monsters on the planet may not be alien after all.
Director Tom Green (Misfits) takes over for Gareth Edwards this time around, since the latter has moved on to name-brand monsters and a little franchise you might have heard of.
Monsters: Dark Continent will be released in the U.K. on Nov. 28.
SPACE COMMAND
A new trailer for the indie sci-fi flick Space Command has arrived, and it’s loaded with familiar sci-fi faces and some 1950s pulp attitude. Honestly, it looks like a lot of fun.
The series, developed by veteran writer and director Marc Scott Zicree (Sliders, Space Precinct), is meant to evoke the nostalgia and positivity of classic science fiction. The effects are a little silly, and the whole thing has a low-budget feel, but it’s still a delightful genre throwback. It almost has a bit of a Star Trek: The Original Series vibe.
The best part? You’ll recognize a boatload of the cast. It includes Star Trek players Ethan Phillips, Robert Picardo and Armin Shimmerman; Babylon 5 alums Mira Furlan and Bill Mumy; former The X-Files fan fave Dean Haglund and acclaimed creature actor Doug Jones (Hellboy, Falling Skies). It’s a fun cast, and if nothing else, it’s a blast to see them all together in one project.
Watch the new trailer above and check out the synopsis below:
The SC stories follow the bold future adventures of the United Planet’s Space Command, a dedicated group of scientists, soldiers and adventurers exploring and taming the vast expanse of our solar system for human colonization … Reminiscent of sci-fi’s optimistic past, SPACE COMMAND promises high-flying adventure, stunning visual effects, memorable characters and thoughtful discussions of eternally human conflicts.
Shooting for the first film resumed Aug. 25, and the process is reportedly in the “home stretch” to wrap up the first installment of the potential franchise.
DEATH OF WOLVERINE
Charles Soule has been a familiar name for comic book readers over the last couple of years, with the part-time writer (he famously maintains his day job as an attorney) at one point being responsible for no less than seven ongoing series for three different companies simultaneously. That is no longer going to be the case, however, with the news that Soule has signed an exclusive contract with Marvel Entertainment.
Originally reported by USA Today, the new deal coincides with Soule's most high-profile project yet, Marvel's The Death of Wolverine, which launches Sept. 3 in comic stores and digitally (Skottie Young's variant cover for the first issue, left). Marvel confirmed the new contract with The Hollywood Reporter and said that more information will be released Wednesday.
In addition to creating the main Death of Wolverine series with Steve McNiven, which runs weekly through Sept., Soule is also overseeing the already-announced follow-up projects, The Logan Legacy and The Weapon X Program.
The exclusive deal will see Soule continue to write the ongoing Inhuman series for Marvel. While it's not yet known who will replace the writer on his DC titles Red Lanterns and Swamp Thing, DC announced last month that Peter Tomasi would take over writing Soule's third DC title, Superman/Wonder Woman with its thirteenth issue. The status of his creator-owned series Letter 44 at Oni Press — currently in development as a TV series — is unclear, but likely to be unaffected by the new deal (creator-owned projects for other publishers have traditionally been exempted from Marvel's exclusive contracts).
BIG HERO 6
ABC has provided a sneak preview of Walt Disney Animation Studios' next feature, the Marvel adaptation Big Hero 6.
Big Hero 6 is an action comedy adventure about brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city.
Featuring the voices of Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, TJ Miller, Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans Jr., Genesis Rodriguez, Daniel Henney. Maya Rudolph, James Cromwell, and Alan Tudyk, the movie is set to hit theaters on November 7.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE
Closing out the troubled summer at the North American box office, James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy easily ruled the Labor Day holiday, earning a victorious $22.2 million in its fifth weekend for domestic total of $280 million. It will even break the curse that has plagued other summer tentpoles and hit $300 million domestically.
Globally, the Marvel Studios and Disney event pic has earned $553.6 million.
New Labor Day weekend entries As Above, So Below and The November Man did only modest business, coming in No. 5 and No. 6 behind Guardians, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, If I Stay and R-rated comedy Let's Be Cops with $10.3 million and $10.2 million, respectively. November Man, opening Wednesday, did a total $11.9 million in its six-day debut.
Hollywood is more than ready to say goodbye to one of the most disappointing summers in memory, although some prospered, such as Disney and market-leader Fox.
North American revenue for the season came in at an estimated $4.05 billion, marking an eight-year low and, when accounting for inflation, a 17-year low. And revenue is down 15 percent from last year's record haul of $4.75 billion, the biggest year-over-year decline that anyone can remember. Even Labor Day, never a big moviegoing holiday, was down more than 14 percent from last year. Summer attendance was also down by more than 5 percent.
Guardians has been one of the summer's few bright spots and is now the top-grossing film of 2014 to date domestically, eclipsing the $259.8 million earned by fellow Marvel and Disney tentpole Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And international returns remain strong, helping to make up for the gap for many films.
From Legendary Entertainment, As Above, So Below skewed notably younger, with 65 percent of the audience under the age of 25. The audience was split evenly in terms of gender.
The psychological thriller cost a mere $5 million to make, and follows a group of explorers who discover dark forces when they dive into the catacombs that lie beneath the streets of Paris. Universal is releasing the film, which targeted younger consumers with an aggressive digital campaign.
From director Roger Donaldson, The November Man follows an ex-CIA agent (Brosnan) who is brought back for one more mission and finds himself pitted against his former pupil. The movie, returning Brosnan in a James Bond-like role, skewed notably older, with 85 percent of ticket buyers over the age of 25.
The $20 million-plus movie was made and financed by The Solution Entertainment Group, Palmstar Media Capital and Merced Media Partners. Olga Kurylenko and Luke Bracey also star in November Man, which Relativity acquired for $3 million.
Poor reviews likely November Man, although audiences liked it better, giving it a B+ CinemaScore. As Above, So Below earned a withering C- CinemaScore.
For the nostalgic set, Sony celebrated the 30th anniversary of Ivan Reitman's Ghostbusters by releasing the classic supernatural comedy in 784 theaters before the anniversary edition comes out on Blu-ray.
Among more limited releases, Spanish-language venture Pantelion and Lionsgate launched biopic Cantinflas in 382 locations to a pleasing $3.3 million. The movie stars Oscar Jaenda as Cantinflas, Mexico's greatest and most beloved comedy star of all time. Cantinflas opens in Mexico in September.
Cantinflas earned an A CinemaScore, and Pantelion is hoping it becomes nearly as successful as Instructions Not Included, the top grossing Spanish-language film of all time in North America. Among indie films, Jon Favreau's Chef crossed the $30 million mark at the domestic box office as it re-expanded nationwide, cooking up a sweet victory for the filmmaker and Open Road Films.
John Carney's Begin Again also took advantage of the Labor Day holiday to once again expand. The Weinstein Co. grossed $1.1 million for the four-day holiday for a domestic total of $15.6 million.
Here are the estimated top 10 films for the four-day Labor Day weekend at the domestic box office:

THE MAZE RUNNER
A new featurette for The Maze Runner has debuted, outlining the daily drill for those trapped in the Glade.
"Every day, the Maze Runners follow the same procedure," Ki Hong Lee explains to Dylan O'Brien, as he notes the importance of the map room, section assignments and gear. "Come back before the doors close," he concludes of the rules. "If you survive, we do it all again the next day." As for those who don't, well, we already know what happens to them.
The Fox film centers on Thomas (O'Brien), a teenager who wakes up in a region by roughly 50 other boys and surrounded by a deadly maze. He has no memory of his past and does not know why he has been brought there.
The big-screen adaptation of James Dashner's dystopian novel, directed by Wes Ball, also stars Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Patricia Clarkson, among others.
The Maze Runner hits theaters Sept. 19.

LABOR DAY
Labor Day is a day of rest or the last chance for many people to go on trips before the summer ends. For students, it is the last chance to organize parties before school starts again. In some neighborhoods, people organize fireworks displays, barbecues and public arts or sports events. The football season starts on or around Labor Day and many teams play their first game of the year during Labor Day weekend.
Traditionally, people did not wear white clothes, particularly shoes, after Labor day. However, this custom is slowly dying out. More and more people now wear white all year round, rather than just in the summer. Similarly, it is the custom to wear a straw cowboy hat from Memorial Day until Labor Day, then a felt one until Memorial Day comes around again.
I hope everyone who has the day off enjoys whatever they choose to do -- kick back and enjoy.
Unedited Star Wars Cantina Sceneby chanoyUNEDITED STAR WARS FOOTAGE OF BAR SCENE
While we patiently wait to see what J.J. Abrams is putting together for Episode VII, how about a walk down memory lane through one of Star Wars’ most iconic scenes?
A boatload of behind-the-scenes pics, original design sketches and even the original uncut footage from Star Wars’ alien cantina scene have surfaced online — offering up a fascinating peek into a piece of footage that would go on to inspire tons of other sci-fi projects and set the tone for one of the genre’s biggest franchises.
Considering the mid-size budget that George Lucas was working with to make the original Star Wars, the Mos Eisley cantina scene was ambitious as hell. Combining an insane amount of practical effects to create our first peek at the truly alien universe abroad, it’s amazing to get a closer look at all the masks and costume designs that went into making it happen. Even dated, it's still impressive.
It’s easy to forget just how trendsetting the original Star Wars trilogy was for its time, and though we give Lucas a lot of grief for the prequel trilogy, he’s still one of the greatest genre minds living today. You just have to, ya know, go back a few decades to hit the highlights.
DOCTOR STRANGE
A little more than a month ago, as Marvel Studios geared up for its annual Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, we were all pretty convinced we were about to get some major Doctor Strange news. Marvel had already announced the film's director, Scott Derrickson, in June, and as rumors that Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix would take the title role heated up the day before the panel, we expected something big.
Well, the panel came and went, and nothing happened. Since then we've heard nothing but more rumors about who exactly Marvel wants for the film, including recent whispers that Boardwalk Empire star Jack Huston was up for the lead. Though we don't know exactly when the film will hit theaters, we know a director is already attached, which almost certainly means the release can't be all that far off. So why hasn't Stephen Strange himself been cast?
Earlier today, Collider reported that Phoenix is now in "final talks" to join Doctor Strange as the Sorcerer Supreme, noting that his Marvel contract is "at the 1 yard line, about to pass into the endzone." As for what's taking so long, Collider's report attributed the delay to Phoenix's desire to make his Marvel contract as flexible as possible, so he can continue work on other films. Badass Digest's Devin Faraci then reported via Twitter that Phoenix did indeed meet with Marvel sometime this week, but that there was still a chance he'd back away from a Doctor Strange commitment. Latino Review's Umberto Gonzalez backed up that report shortly thereafter, tweeting that he'd heard directly from Phoenix's representatives, and that there was "lots still to work out." Though there's some dispute as to how close a final deal is, all three outlets seem to be in agreement that Phoenix is the guy Marvel wants. Now the question is: Why hasn't the superhero juggernaut been able to lock Phoenix down yet?
In a Badass Digest post expanding on his tweets from earlier today, Faraci reported that Marvel was indeed pursuing Phoenix in July, not just to be Doctor Strange, but to make his debut as a Marvel Studios star during the Hall H panel. They were hoping to seal the deal with him that very day and get him to walk out on the stage that night (think of the eruption in that hall if it had happened), but they just couldn't make it work in time. Ever since the Phoenix reports first surfaced, we've been talking about the multipicture demands Marvel makes on its actors as a major obstacle between him and joining this film, but according to Faraci, the uncertainty might run deeper. This might not just be a case of Phoenix shying from a long-term commitment to one character. It might be that he's simply not sure if he can adapt to the FX-heavy demands of this kind of blockbuster.
"He's a great actor, and he can play the role. But the Marvel Studios blockbuster machine is full of pre-viz and fight-viz and green screen and massive reshoots. It's not a world that's as comfortable for him, and he's just not certain he can do it," Faraci said. "And I kind of think this is a terrific piece of self-awareness, and a piece of self-awareness that might keep the deal from closing. If Marvel can get past any issues Phoenix has with the larger contract they still have to get over the doubt this terrific actor has about working in this larger environment."
So, it seems the difficulty could lie beyond Phoenix's reluctance to sign on for multiple movies. It could be that his biggest concern is not being able to work on whatever else he wants, but being able to work on these films -- with all of the unique acting challenges they present -- while remaining at the top of his game. That's an admirable thing to be concerned about, but as Faraci notes, it may also be the thing that ultimately keeps Phoenix from this project.
ARROW
A new Arrow teaser is here and fans of Oliver and Felicity will have a lot to talk about.
The 20-second season-three promo opens with Oliver hinting that he still has secrets before it cuts to an anticipated moment by fans, the much talked-about Oliver-Felicity kiss in the premiere.
At Comic-Con, the Arrow gang offered some teases about Oliver and Felicity's date — first revealed in the season-three trailer. Executive producer Greg Berlanti reassured that producers "weren't trying to fake anybody out with Oliver's confession to her at the end of last year, so we'll deal with that directly this year," while Stephen Amell hinted that their date goes "horribly."
There are also glimpses of a new Thea under the guise of her father, Malcolm, and some major knock-down, drag-out fights.
As executive producer Marc Guggenheim told The Hollywood Reporter, season three follows the theme of identity. "It's the first season where this theme of identity is not only about Oliver but is also about all the other characters," he said.
Arrow returns Oct. 8 on The CW.
ONCE UPON A TIME
Storybrooke is about to get Frozen.
In a new Once Upon a Time season-four teaser exclusive to The Hollywood Reporter, Frozen's Elsa (Georgina Haig) passes through the town's landmark hangouts (Mr. Gold's shop, Granny's diner), leaving her chilly mark wherever she goes.
Naturally, her unwelcome presence puts everyone — from Mr. Gold/Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) and Mary Margaret/Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) to David/Charming (Josh Dallas) and Captain Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) — on edge.
Though Elsa's face is never shown, her looming threat is powerful enough to get even Regina/Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) to ready for the coming wrath. Just as the voiceover ominously hints at trouble for Storybrooke, Regina voices her dread, "Here we go again ....."
But Emma (Jennifer Morrison), in her signature red leather jacket, has her own thoughts on the new villainess: "Really?"
Frozen is getting a major presence on Once in the new season with a flurry of familiar characters as it picks up after the events of Disney's Oscar-winning movie: Anna (Elizabeth Lail), Kristoff (Scott Michael Foster), Prince Hans (Tyler Jacob Moore) and Pabbie the Troll King (John Rhys-Davies). Lost alumna Elizabeth Mitchell appears in a mysterious Frozen-related role.
Comic-Con attendees in July were treated to a special first look from the premiere that featured Elsa and Anna at their parents' grave site as they prepare for Anna's wedding to Kristoff.
Executive producer Adam Horowitz told The Hollywood Reporter in May that they were "honored" to incorporate the Frozen universe into Once. "We fell in love with [the movie] when it came out last year like everyone did, and we want to do our best to do it justice," he said.
Once Upon a Time returns Sunday, Sept. 28 on ABC.
